- Zlorp, on 10/02/2008, -4/+124***** OUR GOVERNMENT
- moodley, on 10/02/2008, -6/+106This is ridiculous... pro sports make enough money... quit spending outs!!!!
- stigmataman, on 10/02/2008, -28/+124NASCAR's for retards
- rynTAU, on 10/02/2008, -5/+70what does a senate bailout plan have to do with the executive branch?
- knyghtryda, on 10/02/2008, -1/+66There is so much pork in the bailout bill its not even funny... If a bill this important can't pass unless everyone gets to get their own little something... that pretty much means the bill is just bad and needs a thorough rethinking by both parties.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+34No, no, don't do it! that's how they reproduce!
- noliberalbull, on 10/02/2008, -5/+39Really? You stoop to blaming everything in a bill written by CONGRESS on the president? really? You're that dumb not to know the difference?
There is so much pork and sugar in this bill its disgusting, and the president didn't put any of it there.
/doesn't want bill to pass even without the pork
//let the market work it out - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -15/+48When the economy is slow . . . Bush still finds a way to "go fast!"
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -2/+35nothing the blogger would have to research who wrote the bill , and he didn't learn that in junior college
- j3ff86, on 10/02/2008, -4/+37Why not just buy a go kart?
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/02/2008, -1/+27they got elected.. and stopped caring.
- dizilbdog, on 10/02/2008, -2/+28Can someone throw legalize marijuana in there too, you can tax it too... and it's better for the environment than Nascar.
- balibones, on 10/02/2008, -0/+25It's not just the NASCAR stuff that bothers me. It's all of it. Breaks on taxing rum? WTF does ANY of this PORK have to do with the bail out other than increasing the price tag by almost 2 billion dollars?
- SpamBurger, on 10/02/2008, -0/+24NONE of that money should be used on ***** entertainment.
- pearcewg, on 10/02/2008, -0/+23Throw the flames to the side for a second...which Senator had this put into the current legislation.
That is the real question. - nupr, on 10/02/2008, -0/+23Really? Vote out all of the sitting members of Congress, jerks.
- netburnr, on 10/02/2008, -10/+31While I do not support the extra crap thrown into the bill, I did find this article's writer to be a complete douche.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/02/2008, -0/+21So it should be doing just fine, financially, unless management is screwing things up.
- kmlove, on 10/02/2008, -1/+22I am yet to actually read NASCAR specifically in the article (other then the authors own interpretations, not in the bill material). Racing in general is quite large in the United States, yes, larger then soccer. And for most Digg users....Bush doesn't control everything in the American government, there's something called congress and the house that vote on this stuff.
- aelias, on 10/03/2008, -0/+20Had he said NASCAR is retarded, you would be on point. Since he said it's FOR retards, you made his point for him. Now get back to sorting bolts, Corky.
- jonbeatz, on 10/02/2008, -1/+21not surprised. it seems something like this gets worked into every government plan.
- Ziggy7273, on 10/02/2008, -3/+21That's why it's the most watched sport in America.............wait
- thefarouk, on 10/02/2008, -0/+18actually 2nd most watched professional sport on television, behind american football. Not #1.
You know, I'm one of those rare motor sports fans not from the South - so the whole "redneck" element of it is something I could do without. But several months back, I wrote both my senators and asked why so much federal money was being used to sponsor so many cars in the sport. Every military branch of the country sponsors its own car - Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard... hell, even the Border Patrol sponsors a car. I demanded they investigate this ridiculous waste of tax dollars (it takes around $20M to sponsor a cup car, about $10M to sponsor a nationwide car. That's somewhere around $90M the military is spending to sponsor NASCAR teams). While I have received a number of responses from them on other issues, sadly all I got for that email was the sound of crickets.
Nationalists are big on supporting sports like NASCAR, because of the patriotism aspect. NASCAR is one of those places where the military has more success recruiting, than most other venues. NASCAR is the only professional sport I know of where they not only always sing the national anthem, but also have an invocation, and a military fly-over. Every one.
I would point out, though, that the bill says "...Motor Sports Facility..." which doesn't necessarily mean NASCAR (although it likely does). As it is, the France family (which runs the NASCAR organization) also owns half of the tracks on the circuit, so yeah this is probably going to them so they can keep paying for those fly-overs. - nugz85, on 10/02/2008, -6/+23nascar sucks, and it sure as ***** is not a sport
- hiriumi, on 10/02/2008, -2/+19This is why we cannot trust the government. Whatever the President or Paulson say to scare us, we cannot trust them.
- steelaman, on 10/02/2008, -3/+18...I don't think...Bush wrote it
- yellowfish04, on 10/02/2008, -0/+15I am intrigued by your idea and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
- algaeturd, on 10/02/2008, -1/+16Yeah, that's old already.
- FrankTheTank17, on 10/02/2008, -2/+17Wow, all these posts with ignorant comments. Seriously, where in the bail out plan does it mention anything about NASCAR?
"Seven-year cost recovery period for motorsports racing track facility."
NASCAR doesn't own any motorsport racing track facilities. If you want to yell at Congress for having the bail out plan, at least do your research and use a legitimate excuse... - yojiffyskippy, on 10/02/2008, -1/+16Nascar isn't entertaining.
- guapo42, on 10/02/2008, -1/+16It's the same argument in dealing with Wall Street executives.
- andytehpanda, on 10/02/2008, -0/+14Not bush's doing. Congress threw on all of this crap to this bill. It went from three pages to over 1200. Other strange provisions include "Tax breaks for Oregon based manufactures of target arrows for small children"
- Wargalas, on 10/02/2008, -10/+24Welcome to the Democratically controlled Congress. Was it everything you hoped it would be? What happened to ending the "culture of corruption"?
What happened to running "the most open and honest Congress in history"?
What happened? - Smuikas, on 10/02/2008, -1/+15@15thPD:
Heh, watch episode 8 of the 10th season of Top Gear. Hammond (quite a good driver) attempts to drive an F1 car.
Some tidbits you might not know:
The horsepower-ton ratio for a typical F1 car is 1500:1.
F1 engines rev at 18,000 RPM
The exhaust is 1,800 to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit
In order to drive them properly, you need to drive them fast. You cannot go slow in an F1 car. To break, the breaks need to be warm (you need to be going fast). To go, the tires need to be warm (you need to be going fast). If you slow down too much, the engine will shut off to prevent stalling (which would cause a seized engine) and you'll likely spin out.
Can decelerate from 62mph to 0 in about 17 meters. It takes a Porsche 911 31.4 meters.
Drivers need to be able to withstand constant forces of up to 3.5g's while cornering. Imagine being thrown to one side of your vehicle three and a half times harder than it would if you fell.
Compare to astronauts, who experience around 3 g's for 8 minutes during the final burn of the shuttle's main engines. Keep in mind, this force is back (as if you are accelerating), not sideways (as if you are turning). If you weigh 160lbs, you need to be able to be physically fit enough to keep 480 pounds from flying at the side of the car. NASCAR racers experience about 3Gs going around turns, because they cannot corner is quickly as F1 cars can.
Because of all the thinking you must do to keep the car within non-spin speed and able-breaking speed while going around curves and hairpins at >150mph, it's widely considered one of the most grueling - mentally and physically - of any sport. There's a reason more people in the world follow and watch it than NASCAR.
"Nothing appealing to me about souped up street-cars that sit an inch above the ground running around an oval for 4 hours."
Plus, the only time I went to a NASCAR race, the food made me incredibly ill. I was puking for 40 hours afterward. - vandy, on 10/02/2008, -1/+14NASCAR doesn't actually own any race tracks. This is for independent corporations.
- rumagin, on 10/02/2008, -1/+14with all due respect youre a muppet if you believe the line about "the destructive consequences doing nothing would have." Its a fear tactic. the $700,000,000,000 is a transfer of wealth from the taxpayer to the banking/financial sector and many associated with it. Within the first two months of the next presidency we will return precisely to this same disastrous economic point in time. the difference being the rich will have insulated themselves as best they can against the economic depression global society will fall into. The persons who will suffer most are those who have no economic insulation, have no credit, and have seen the value of their properties/equity collapse. The bill is plain and simply about robbery, it is not about avoiding destructive consequences, that train my friend has already left the station, and is heading at highspeed straight off the cliff whether you acknowledge or not...Now if you want to say the bailout is to help some at the consequence of others then i would agree with you. That means in contradiction to what you and many other sheep might suggest, the "average American" is still going to get ***** over.
- klikkgabow, on 10/02/2008, -0/+13Pretty sure the senate added this in after Bush's original plan got voted down in the house.
- fleischner, on 10/02/2008, -2/+15It was a typo. They meant to write "NASDAQ".
- PhilipLiu, on 10/02/2008, -2/+14Hey, did anyone read the actual amending document???? It is merely a restatement of the TABLE OF CONTENTS for the division of the legal text so that people know where the new legislation is slotted!!!! It has NOTHING to do with the amendment....
Sheesh. Bury this story. - Nboy514, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12What do you expect from a bunch of guys who get off going in circle?
- handmadewallaby, on 10/02/2008, -3/+15Motorsport is a sport, hence the title. Drivers have to build up endurance in physical ability. There is far more to a racer than just climbing into the car and going from the starting grid to the finish line. F1 drivers are some of the fittest people in the world. During a single F1 grand prix, a driver will burn thousands of calories. If you haven't noticed yet, I'm a F1 fan and NASCAR sucks.

- kenedamick, on 10/02/2008, -6/+17Congrats, idiot.
- cxret, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10WHAT??!?? Part of our tax dollars are going to this?? Vote these jokers out of Congress!
- TalenGTP, on 10/02/2008, -11/+21I'd rather see NASCAR get money rather than ACORN
- PopcornDave, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10Or simply that both parties are spoiled children who seem to get their way when they whine enough and their parents give in.
- lanismycousin, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9every big bill like this has pork added up to it.
when there are more lobbyist in DC than there are members of senate/congress bribes happen - rarkai, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9I guess no one watches silly old football anymore according to your expert statistics.
- str1fe, on 10/02/2008, -9/+18Driving cars is considered a sport?
