- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+54Despite how it looks, it doesn't surprise me that he's fine. Ironically, the spectacular crashes are usually the safest, because they last the longest: the kinetic energy they had at the beginning of the crash is lost spread over a greater span of time. Contrast with the crash that killed Dale Earnheart (sp?), which was a single "thud" against the side wall - he lost 180mph (or however much) worth of speed in the space of about a quarter of a second. This crash has it spaced out over 5-10 seconds.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44or dont. We don't care.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I'm not sure if "HUGE" is the right adjective, only one car, but it certainly is a horrible crash!
- crosswick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Why the hell did they put a grassy knoll there? Damn you grassy knolls!
- ecdmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Personally, I prefer it when out of control cars DON'T come flipping across the road in front of me. But hey, to each his own.
- albinoMithos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Psh they've got nothing on my burnout 3 crashes.
- ecdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18He was fine, according to this article:
http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/grandam/27471/
and they interview him. pretty interesting. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Petty's crash at Daytona still reigns supreme...

2 http://www.fastmachines.com/archives/f1/001603.php - lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Biggest crash I will ever see? pffft. I was expecting a 300 car pile-up, glass shattering, gas trucks exploding, car alarms going off, people terrified of the car in front of them and behind them, brake lights going off, 18-wheelers swerving out of control and rolling over, fireworks going off, all of course taking place on a highway with lots of cars, crashbreakers going off.... Oh, the "biggest motorsport crash", I thought you were talking about Burnout Revenge.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Typically in all motorsports, when a car tubmles like that, it's good because it's releasing some of the crash's energy the whole time it's tumbling. Driver usually walks away because the G forces stay relatively low. It's when you don't tubmle and hit flush with a wall that kills because of the hundreds of G's.
However in F1 and other sports where your head is the rollbar, you don't to do a lot of 200 kph tumbling, lol. - Dested, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This was posted 18 hours ago, anyone know if he's okay?
- PumpkinSoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Mate, that's not a crash.
This is a crash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWYPa-Aqt_E - *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I take his point though! Especially when they sit in the fast lane and won't let you past, or come flying up from behind at 100mph and then sit on your arse.
- gsnedders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In F1, there's an air intake above the Driver's head, and have been for many decades. Trulli had a large crash a year or two ago at Silverstone, rolled over several times from very very high speeds, and walked away completely unharmed.
The point is that the car surviving the crash is the lowest priority, and the driver the highest. In the case of F1, let the carbon fibre disintegrate and take in the majority of the impact, and leave the safety cell undamaged. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12lucky? Have you ever seen a racing car from inside?
- neutrascrub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5if this is the biggest crash you've ever seen, you need to get out more...or in on youtube
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice sinusoid he got going there.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Much more entertaining pileup(s):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNzDOA0y7C0 - supremesonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"We'll be back for winner celebrations right after this..."
Oh good, I can't wait to see that. - meatpopsicle, on 10/12/2007, -15/+196.8 6.5 6.1 5.5 7.1 Total 6.8
- gsnedders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRGJzrbak_c - There's a video of Trulli's crash that I referred to.
- swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like Katherine Legge's crash in Elkhart lake Wis better. It happened at a speed of at least 165 mph. When she got out of the medical trailer, she said that if she had a car, she'd go race it. She also said that to be a race car driver, you have to have a screw loose. Injuries... bruised knees.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjMs2XXRoS4
There are about a dozen clips on you tube. - raabco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I watched this when it was originally aired, pretty amazing wreck. I don't think that the slow-motion gives you as good of a perception of just how violent it was.
- twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Does anyone actually know if he was okay or not? Damn that car had alot of momentum.
- trev0006, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1That was one crazy crash.
http://www.dpccars.com/bmw/bmw.htm - schoofman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was a dirty clip if the clipping driver meant to do it.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3By awesome car he means nice car which is priced to that of an awesome car.
- fquednau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed, that accident involved a lot of overturning, meaning that the energy can dissipate over a longer period of time. More dangerous are certainly straight hits onto objects where all the impulse is annihilated in just a moment.
- frase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cripes!
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Q: What's the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?
A: For the porcupine, the prick is on the outside. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12Wow, hope he was ok after that.
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAMN theres nothing left of that car!
- solarisbb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1recent crash of gualter salles is unbelievable
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13s5_U2-Nz0 - alanmarchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didn't show the part of the video where the General Lee made that jump and stuck it first. :D
It's getting all warm and brimstone like around my desk.. - hypoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I'm pretty sure you found this video while watching that kid Joey crash his dad's Mustang.
- AutoXer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That happened at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course a couple of months ago. You can find out more about the track here: http://www.racetrackdb.com/index.php?page=rtdetails&track_id=2
Mid-Ohio was repaved and reconfigured last winter. I'm not sure if Joey hit part of the reconfiguration or not. Read about the repave/reconfig here: http://www.racetrackdb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53 - andergriff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone tell me the difference between this and the ancient coloseum. Is it not merely a matter of degree?
- lcrplaya54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how the announcer goes "Here it is again, watch... if you dare!"
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes.
- commandar!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is from a touring car race. The rules in that style of racing are built around avoiding accidents if at all possible. Excessive contact with another car can and usually is penalized. This isn't NASCAR.
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who pays for the car?
do they have like sports car insurance?...they look like there BMW sponcered - salinemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paul Edwards has skills, but he was trying a _little_ too hard there. I hope he butched up and apologized after that.
- smpdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, it was a crash, but "HUGE"? and "one of the biggest you will ever see"?, come on.
- billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see what you did there, dbre2. Very clever.
- Tolzmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"that one hurt"
- Snarf2000, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Wow, that looked bad. Glad he was OK. I found some other cool BMW videos here:
http://www.fastbmws.com - eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was a crash involving my favorite driver of all time: Michael Andretti, back in 1998.
