- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+102Well maybe if we leave her alone she'll try that at a Nascar race.... if we're lucky.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -9/+110It's hard to solve death investigations at Nascar rallies- the DNA's all the same and there's never any dental records.
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -12/+96She's cute and a girl, thus things will work out for her.
It's how the world operates. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+84Yes, but would you hit it?
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -15/+72If you've run a marathon before you'd know that photographers are in the street throughout the race. (Hell, there's even motorcycles!) The thing is that the photographers who are out in the street are paid by the event organizers to get shots of the athletes so they can later sell the prints to the sucker's who'll buy pictures of themselves for $40 a pop.
Runners should be aware. Photographers should try not to move unpredictably. Looking at the runner density in the photos, it shouldn't have been a big deal to run around her. This it totally normal. The poster of this Flickr account is over-reacting, unless there's more to be seen with video. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41You must be new to digg.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Barriers don't work against cute girls.
it's their one design flaw damn it! - residentweevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Obviously you were not aware that this shameless woman has a history of such behavior.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotosdepena/290806734/ - itsthemechanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27She'd have to catch me first.
- itsthemechanic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32I would have bowled her bitch ass over.
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27***** squirrels, stop stealing my water!
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22She's the human equivalent of a popup ad.
- BigDan34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23seems like you're a geek who have never done a race in his life. Sorry but I do triathlons and after many miles you're tired and just want to keep your beat and the last thing you want to do is to bodycheck the guy beside you because a stupid girl is blocking the road just to take a ***** picture. Many photographs takes good pictures without annoying the runners like this.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21no you wouldn't, you only say that because you're on digg. you would have smile and ran like everyone else.
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18With a bat, maybe.
- itsthemechanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Believe me I have a history of bowling ppl over IRL, at 6'2" and 200lb I don't have to fear many repercussions. People don't argue with a bald huge fat bastard like me.
But then you wouldn't ever catch me running a marathon :) - flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I thought that's what BARRIERS are for.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15In a sexual or non sexual way? (Or both, if that's the way you "get down")
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Self-righteous people like her would've sued you for that.
- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I don't think anyone would be complaining if she was merely shooting and posting closeups of runners (even though I don't think that's technically right either). The problem here is she's blocking runners--they have to move around and potentially break rhythm, etc. She's directly and physically interfering with the marathon itself.
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And she's homely too....
- Michalson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13She is blocking runners - and because this is a marathon, she's blocking a whole lot (like dropping a stopped car in the middle of a busy freeway).
Yes, photographers take pictures of events. Sort of like a visual journalist.
However journalists have this thing - if you are interfering with the natural outcome of an event, you are no longer reporting the news, you are making the news. She is interfering with this race - as a result she is no longer photographing the outcome of the race, she is photographing how she interfered with the outcome of the race. Her stupid and inconsiderate behavoir is entirely to blame for her becoming a news item rather then a news reporter.
(and I've run in short marathons before - a blockage like this certainly has an affect on people) - Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow thats harsh isn't it!? I'm sure that women was an inconvenience to the marathon runners but its hardly unforgivable! And how the hell is the statement "I was ashamed for everyone who has ever held a camera today." justified!?
Shes still rude... but the guy who took the picture of her being rude was also rude and the guy who posted the comments was rude because he didn't even know her and yet still slated her. The Rudeness!! - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13what a dumbass
- DJFMA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The sad thing is that with the lens she has on there... there is no reason she NEEDS to get that close. Zoom in lazy ass.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7oh bah. if they were really annoyed, they could "accidentally" shoulder checked that man-looking woman and knocked her precious little camera on the ground.
- chrisbtig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wallbanger, you are incorrect. I've run marathons and road races for the past 20 years, and I've NEVER seen a photographer standing in the middle of the road like this.
Yes, the event does hire professional photographers to photograph the runners... however, they are usually seated on cranes above the road so that they can photograph the runners as they pass below them. - ETurner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I'd hit her.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Never had a runner directly in front of you fall down? I have. That's a bigger hassle for me than going around a stationary photographer. Should NYC have removed all the lightposts from the course as well? I don't support the photographer being there, but I don't think she should be ostracized for this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg for this - http://firsthourmovies.com/images/wtf.jpg
- tobyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"the total marathon was 5k"
All marathons are 26.2 miles. A 5k is a 5k. - yodandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What a stupid ****, having run a half marathon, and being a runner in high school, I know just how much a middle of a race can hurt, and how anything breaking your rhythm and pace can screw you over.
Her punishment? Force her to run even 3 miles straight...ugh - polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no but you'll get pissed and rant about the article.............uhhh whats the difference?
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As a runner I would say that most runners are not the angry violent type. Some may get pissed off but we're more concerned with finishing then with jerk photographers. She should move, but lay off the kill her attitude.
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11looks like the guy in yellow is saying "you ***** moron why are you in the road, please stop being a dumbass"
she would be in everyone else's pictures as well, so wtf? why did she have to be in the middle of the road - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8id slap a bitch and hit that
- korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That snot is always getting in everyone's way.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/firsthourmovies/290868504/ - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4someone get her a telephoto lens :)
- DharmaTurtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ goat
What the *****????
I suppose that's where the title came from... - dbldwn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+370mm isn't much zoom. But that's no excuse for getting in the way of the event. Hell, even credentialed photogs stay the hell out of the way.
- Fountain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think that picture is being taken at a curve in the road.
http://flickr.com/photos/icopythat/290763345/ - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had groups of completely obnoxious people near where I watched the race from. They crossed the barricade, moved their baby strollers past the barricades ... then broke the yellow police tape that'd been put up to prevent them from going even further into the street. The cop assigned to police our side wasn't forceful enough to keep them out of the way of the racers. Completely obnoxious.
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"In a sexual or non sexual way?"
Tony Danza, bitch! - soloride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3She has also taking pictures for the NFL:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/icopythat/289901101/#comment72157594363897434 - Logal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Being a photojournalist myself I can understand how she can get frustrated by not getting the shot she wants, this is definitely a ballsy move, but sometimes you have to chock it up and move on to another idea. To be honest, the shots she would have got there probably would have sucked, nothing you really hadn't seen before, especially with that lens.
- n1qaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Weasels... I have run many races and had these people stand right there... I can just imagine how infuriating it must be for a foot runner. As a wheel chair racer, I have clipped a few toes...sorrry chairs don't jog.... As a photographer of races, this kind of behavior is unacceptable. Get a longer lens and stay the f.ck out of the way. One of these days one of these 40 dollar shot weasels is going to step in front of a money runner and then we will see the s.it hit the fan.
- icopythat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dear Flicker, Digg, and Lightstalker,
Now that this has finally cooled down I would like to respond to some of the accusations and guess work.
My biggest regret in the situation was not talking to her. I was going to but she literally ran away. What hasn't been discussed is the time frame - I saw her even with me for about one minute as I watched in shock as she walked against the foot traffic and stepping in front of people. She continued away from me and that is when I took my pictures. I thought she would be off of the course soon enough. It was sort of like watching a child play with a wild animal cage from a distance. She then came back towards me and as I was about to confront her she broke into a run. The whole thing took around 3 - 4 minutes and around 30 runners were inconvenienced (or that is how I saw it).
When I went home I couldn't stop thinking of the events and I made a quick and frank flickr post. My hope was that within our small greenpoint photography world that someone would see it and pass it on to her. I had no idea this would get so much attention.
I have since taken down the "skinny girl" comment. It was meant tongue in cheek - it was not taken that way by some.
I considered taking the photo off line because of some of the cruel comments towards this woman, but I hope the full discussion will make enough people think about a photographer's place. I would never advocate any sort of group attack on someone that has not had a chance to defend herself. I believe many of the violent posts were made in jest, I even know a few of the people who made the comments and I know that they were meant for me. Humor is a hard thing to read on the internet and even harder to translate into other languages. I don't believe it is a dangerous post at all... no one got hurt, no one will get hurt.
I did see other photographers occasionally on the course - they were either moving with the crowd or were far enough away where nothing could happen. They were safe, considerate, and sanctioned.
Granted, she was at the rear of the race where people were not going as fast - but that only makes it easier to get the good photos without getting in peoples' way. She did not.
I, very specifically, positioned myself at a curve in the road so that I could see the runners coming straight at me and I shot with a 200mm lens and a 17-55mm. I was not in anyone's way. I was at his bend in the road - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=n+14th+at+berry+st,+Brooklyn,+NY+11211&daddr=manhattan+ave+at+bedford+ave,+brooklyn,+ny+&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=40.723267,-73.952901&spn=0.005171,0.009624&om=1
There was never a problem with her getting in my shots, I already had taken hundreds.
The photoshop creations are hilarious. Though I may partial to the last supper.
Thank you to everyone that thought about this rather than judged it. - Maxpower2912, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3I totally know what he is talking about, I HAVE shoulder checked annoying spectators, mostly during 10k road races, If they are in my way, they go down. End of story, and thats only a 10k, I can't imagine what I would do if this happened to me during a marathon.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Pull your ***** pants up!!!!
- Swamphhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First, I run these races all the time and, in fact, I ran the NY marathon on Sunday. (3:52) I have never in my life seen a photographer in the middle of the road in front of runners like that. Usually they are up on platforms or bridges and they are always out of the way. And for the record, I didn't see this girl on the course or any other photographers on the course for that mater.
Second, a couple posters refered to shorter races as "Marathons" A 5K race is not a marathon. A Marathon is 26.2 miles long. If its not that long its not a marathon.
Third, yes it looks like she was at the rear of the pack with the 6 hour finishers but that is no excuse. I would have checked her hard if she had been in my way. And part of the problem here is that after 20 miles of running, thats almost 3 hours for me, I'm really not all that coherent in the face of sudden obstacles like that and that makes what she did even more dangerous. Distance runners have enough problems at races with other runners stoping suddenly or falling, congestion at the water stops, surface issues, spectators, gimic runners and other problems. So for some photographer to deliberately block the route the way she did is really just a terrible and dangerous decision. -
