- diggnationer, on 02/08/2009, -3/+59did anyone else think "how the hell did that woman swim for a month straight?" when they read the description?
- yacks, on 02/08/2009, -0/+51So someone was actually stupid enough to follow Google's directions to get from Chicago to London, UK..
- pingpants, on 02/08/2009, -2/+482 mos from now: Motrin sponsorship
6 mos from now: papp snap of Figge in Aspen doing bong hits - kplo, on 04/01/2009, -3/+29"Her longest stint in the water was about eight hours"
Absolutely amazing. - DaviDTC, on 02/08/2009, -0/+24If she wasn't wrinkly from age, she is now.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+15this reminds me of that woman in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- latalianheat, on 02/08/2009, -2/+15I get excited when I make it across the swimming pool.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+12Then after the bonghit photo the media will try to convince us that, despite all that she has accomplished, she's a ***** national disgrace.
- Disregard, on 02/08/2009, -0/+12Truly amazing.
It's like the time I ran around the world by walking to and from work over a period of 10 years. - mcko, on 02/08/2009, -3/+14Great, now get back to the kitchen!
- alwaysnomadic, on 02/08/2009, -1/+12"She swam inside a cage to protect her from sharks" (BBC).
It's an incredible achievement, period, but the headline does conjure up an idea of a greater feat, even if an unrealistic one. There might be quite a few people who swim vast distances each day, as in those in serious training, but in an 'uninteresting' pool. They go home for a cosy night's sleep and a meal, Figge gets back on board to eat peanut butter and go to bed.
Still, well done. I couldn't do it! - apena89, on 02/08/2009, -0/+10she must look like a raisin.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -2/+10WTF people swim across the Atlantic?
- Mauly, on 02/08/2009, -2/+10No..
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+8The 56-year-old left the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's western coast on Jan. 12, battling waves of up to 30 feet and strong winds.
- NickLee808, on 02/08/2009, -0/+8Did I ever tell you, I got bit by sharks seven times?
- Rudegar, on 02/08/2009, -1/+9greats to women to join in the otherwise male dominated territory
of doing stupid things for no good reason other then to prove it can be don
:P - MaximusIGN, on 02/08/2009, -0/+7Does anyone know how much of the time she's in the boat versus in the water? The article says some of her swims are 8 hours and others are 21mins. Does that mean that some days she only swam for a short period and rested in the boat? Either way it's pretty incredible and some of the other stuff she's done is equally impressive.

Edit: Ok found a pretty good video about it here that shows the cage she swims in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3dAJ9aDifw
She swims 6 to 8 hours a day. - handheldchimp, on 02/08/2009, -0/+6Abandoned leper colony you say?
- hypocriticizer, on 02/08/2009, -0/+6You should be proud!
- XxpokemasterxX, on 02/08/2009, -0/+6wait.... what?
- Oatlord, on 02/08/2009, -2/+7Came here to comment on exactly this. All these lists noting the first woman to do this, the first black person to do that, the first hispanic that did something else are by their nature racist and sexist.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -1/+6Good thing I didn't print this out, or you, sir, would owe me a new black ink cartridge.
- XxpokemasterxX, on 02/08/2009, -1/+6her dog's name is hank.
- inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+5The distances in that article are way off according to Google Earth.
Cape Verde Islands to the Bahamas:
Article - 2100 miles
Google Earth - 3500 miles
Massachusetts to France:
Article - nearly 4,000 miles
Google Earth - about 3100 miles - inactive, on 02/08/2009, -2/+7So if we care we're sexist.. if we don't care we're sexist..?
- psychohog, on 02/08/2009, -0/+4Yeah, she's 56! I'm in my twenties and 30 minutes is pushing it.
- wgasa, on 02/08/2009, -2/+6Thats amazing. I swim just 20 laps in a pool and quit for a week
- hypocriticizer, on 02/08/2009, -3/+7I wonder if she smoked pot to ease the stress and pain.
- Spoomeister, on 02/08/2009, -1/+4Buried as inaccurate.
The first woman to swim across the Atlantic will have a GPS on her, be in the water 24 hours a day, have a custom setup for rigging a raft for when she needs to sleep, etc. She swam in the ocean for several hours a day every day for a month, which is extraordinary and certainly something I could never do. But she didn't swim across the ocean. - Ogopogo, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2.. absolutely amazing that she has friends that would put up with the incredibly boring job of siting on the boat and watch her inch her way across the Atlantic. No husband, no children.. that explains a lot. She'll be remembered for something tho.
- thebusinessman, on 02/08/2009, -1/+3look at her tight body mmmmm
- dancantone, on 02/08/2009, -4/+6I bet it's tough taking a hot dump! ;)
(I wonder if anyone knew when she did) - muleskinner, on 02/08/2009, -1/+3you didn't read the article did you?
- DiggMasterJ, on 02/08/2009, -1/+3I'd guess it's when she was in the John.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2But look at the first pair of figures - how did she manage to shave 1400 miles off the most direct arc?
One of these sources has to be horribly inaccurate. - trollick, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2It's a HOAX, retards!
Or at least a very inaccurate description of what she actually did. - UObean, on 02/08/2009, -2/+4I don't really get what is so special about this accomplishment. Any decent swimmer could probably do the same thing if you gave them enough time and money to do it. She's swimming in a cage, she eats and sleeps in a boat, and she swims essentially whenever the weather allows her to.
- theOguy, on 02/08/2009, -0/+2And that's just sideways across the shallow end too!
- hetharocks5, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2LOL THEY SURE CAN!
- PakoBedejo, on 02/08/2009, -1/+3Sensationalist title... She was on a boat & inside a cage...that water might as well have been bathwater as far as I'm concerned. Swimming across an ocean IS NOT the same as swimming alongside a boat for a few hours then getting back into it & playing Wii until you go to bed.
- theOguy, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1She's the one who has been doing all the mapping for the new "Google Ocean".
- HyphySoul, on 02/08/2009, -3/+4She has ESP too? Damn...
- asaone, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1good for her,I sure as hell am not going to do it, but good for her
- theOguy, on 02/08/2009, -1/+2No, I don't recall you mentioning that before. Please, go on.....
- wentwhere, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1That was the English Channel
- wentwhere, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Wtf? Props to her, how is this even possible?
- lacrimosa2008, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Dugg for name "Figge" , which - in hessian dialect - means ...
- CLAWC, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1Correction: COLORADO woman...
Just had to throw that shout out in there. (Yay! The fittest state of the tubby 50's) - wentwhere, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1If she swam the whole distance (ie the boat wasn't moving significantly/intentionally closer to her destination when she was on it) then technically she did swim across the ocean.
