Very impressive boat - doubledoh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Totally freaking awesome. Oh to be a dot com billionaire...
- taforever, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8FTA: Perkins insisted that electronics not govern the whole process. The vessel would not be sailed by computer. "No way Bill Gates is controlling my boat," he likes to crack. "I don't ever want to have to press Control-Alt-Delete to restart, to make my boat go."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Amazing that's it's actually a sailboat. Plus it look gorgeous.

Wind Power - SuperOmegaSlack, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4EXTREME!
- LexisNexis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You cant read too good can you? Biggest boat in the world btw is the Knock Nevis.
- wackymacs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The inside looks like something out of Star Trek...
- derricklorah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I did not expect to be that blown away, but man that is a nice boat!!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why does it have a lightweight Recaro seat on a vehicle that weights 500+ tons anyway?
Not having guy wires seems dumb. You can make the masts as strong as you want and that still won't stop them from wrenching (or wrenching out of) the hull.
I am impressed he made a sailing ship though. Anyone can travel by motorboat. - shark615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hmm dingy sailing is often more extreme then cruising or anything but the most intense racing boats.
- shark615, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not the fastest multihull and not the riskiest either. Very safe and very cool.
- in2deep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wow!!!! can you imagine the fun and trouble you could get into on the massive thing!!!
- Agkellyboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's even more incredible in person. I saw it last summer in the mediterranean near St. Tropez I think. It was just massive, with 4 or 5 boats constantly trailing along for a good look. Being on the bridge of our ship at the time, it was great to see the officers get really excited about it; they made two announcements over the loudspeakers and actually changed our course to cut in front of it for a better look. Truly the most beautiful yacht I've ever seen!
- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2uh...why do they call it the "biggest boat in the world" when it's NOT the biggest boat in the world??? It's not even the biggest sailing ship in the world.
- sfpfc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2largest ship in the world
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_Nevis - shark615, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2idiot I mean monohull. point still stands.
- shark615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Its isnt the biggest sailboat either.
- Kardde, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Because you touch yourself at night.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Appreciate you calling me a non moron. I wouldn't want to be lumped in with the morons that populate this place.
The article spends all its time talking about how strong the masts are. They aren't the weak link. That's why I'm complaining. - shark615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like how some non moron posts his opinion on an engineers design and specs as if they know what they are taling about. I am pretty sure they did their homework before they built it.
- EricAnderton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13 words: no manual override
"Dozens of microprocessors, connected by 131,000 feet of hidden cable and wire, automate the operation, allowing Perkins and his crew to control the boat nearly effortlessly. Seventy-five sealed motors, 60 for unfurling and 15 for furling, are used to manage the sails. They are synchronized by computer, but the skipper still needs to implement each step:"
So it's an electrically and electronically articulated sailboat. Also, note the complete lack of solar panels. D'oh. - celkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I am Elemer J. Fudd, a millionaire. I own a mansion and a yacht."
- Frecklefoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Biggest SAILBOAT in the world. There are plenty of SHIPS that are larger. Plenty. Still cool, however.
- repins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It is not a boat it is a ship, you can plainly see two boats near the bow.

Looks like the boat is really powered by dilithium crystals. - bobdotcom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that thing is incredible. So amazingly gorgeous... /drool
- ohstoopid1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not a sailboat, but deserves mentioning. Paul Allen's crazy boat:
http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/paulallen.htm - ChadMonahan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I guess I'm going to have to get one for each ocean.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Life forms. You crazy little life forms. You lovely little life forms. Where are you?
- mon243, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I thought Leeuwin (Australia) was the biggest sailing boat until this...very cool!
- pcp777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0She is simply awesome.
- Jamieee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I dunno why it says "extreme sailing". In my opinion any type of sailing can be extreme. Yes, even dinghy sailing!
- em22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Holy moses! That's brilliant. Just look at the sheer size of the beast, and it looks so well crafted. I'm sure that could make a your heart miss a beat if you saw that pulling into the harbor. It looks as big as one of our bloody war ships! Excellent!
- theOster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"ees not a boat...ees a yacht!"
- Tmiron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0this boat is a disgrace to sailing. the poor design and engineering make it so not all the sails can be raised at once. if you want to see some real sailors and boats go here: http://www.sailinganarchy.com
or check out some moths: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OYV0chVUUU
this guy is a joke, and has probably never really sailed in his life. - fryingfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Under full sail: http://yachts.monacoeye.com/pages/voilesdesainttropez2006-04.html
Detail of the masts: http://yachts.monacoeye.com/yachtsbysize/pages/maltesefalcon01.html
Mari Cha IV for comparison: http://yachts.monacoeye.com/pages/voilesdesainttropez2006-marichaiv01.html
Looks-wise I love the masts and sails but not sure if they go with the classic Perini hull. The big difference between this and other similar sized sailing boats is that one person can drive MF, like a car, from the inside, in all sorts of weather - instead of a dozen people on deck getting blown about. - Vascabruta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Ugly yes, impressive non the less.
http://3rs.org - edmadison23, on 02/05/2008, -0/+0Can one sail this solo?
http://www.OneDesigntalk.com - ljw5021, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0That's pretty incredible.
- method9455, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Most sailors think it is butt ugly (me included). The hull shape looks more like a powerboat (with rumors it once was) and there is a radar arch at the bow of the boat that destroys any lines it has from the side or front. Although the largest single masted yacht (mirabella V) is in the same category
http://yachts.monacoeye.com/yachtsbyname/mediafiles/mirabellav01.jpg I'd much rather have the "smaller" and considerably faster (thus cooler) boat Mari Chi IV which holds most of the speed records in the world. http://w-uh.com/images/Mari_Cha_IV.jpg Now thats a real boat. - diggernaught, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Waste of money, looks like a$$. should have just put on solar cells and batteries sail around in.
