- BlackJackJester, on 10/25/2007, -1/+21If you think about it, many of these companies are pulling in several billion per year...a couple mil for mega advertising? Worth it.
- awtripp, on 10/25/2007, -2/+15corporate naming of stadiums is ***** annoying. same with corporations having to attach their damn brand to name every ***** event. nothing can be just as is. It has always got to be "century 21 home run derby" or "maxi pad shoot off" or some *****. I mean *****, I know there are bigger fish to fry, but can't I ***** enjoy something with out being bombarded by advertisements?
- chrisgnv, on 10/24/2007, -0/+12Corporate naming of stadiums definitely blows. It's bland, cold, boring, and it kills the mystique of the stadium. I.E., Heinz field vs Three Rivers tadium? Mile High vs Invesco Field? ***** *****.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/24/2007, -2/+13Nice, M&T Bank stadium, $5 a year...
- BuckeyeRowe, on 10/25/2007, -6/+16This, in my opinion, is one of the saddest trends in sports. I hate these corporate names. Today you can tell the old, historic parks in America just by their names--Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Lambeau Field--you don't have to know anything about sports.
It's just sad to see that advertising has gone so far that the very places where we hold sporting events has to be an ad. - primesucka, on 10/24/2007, -5/+15This has always pissed me off. Can't we go anywhere without being beaten over the head with advertising?
- TTURabble, on 10/24/2007, -1/+10Gaylord Entertainment Center...You couldn't write a better stadium name.
Also, Reliant owns the entire complex, Reliant Stadium, Astrodome, Arena, Etc...so when you look at the whole thing, they aren't spending $10mil on just the stadium - zioxide, on 10/24/2007, -2/+10I hate this whole naming rights ***** that's come around in the past like 20 years.
- reaver, on 10/24/2007, -2/+9http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=260305 ...
The University of Phoenix will pay $154.5 million over 20 years for naming rights on the Arizona Cardinals' new stadium. - petemcfraser, on 10/25/2007, -1/+8Delta Center is "Energy Solutions Arena" now, and someone needs to cough up the dough to fix that atrocity.
- Coldmetal, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6Here in Philadelphia, PA we used to have a stadium called the First Union Center. Seems like a normal bank naming a stadium and all.... but here in Philly we used to call it the F U Center.
- Cheesecrunch, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7That amount of money for most companies is nothing. Think of all the "free" advertising they will get when they advertise ANYTHING at that stadium..."Tonight! Come see the Rolling Stones! At the Verizon Super-Dome" Verizon just got a "free" plug...
- alexdemers, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6They should update the "Corel Center". It's the Scotiabank Place now.
- HA5TY, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6you know "Wrigley" is an advertisement right?
Its the Wrigley gum comapany.
lol - dolemite5005, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6I don't see Qwest Field on the list.
- alpinecow, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4The Tweeter Center was named for audio-equipment retailer Tweeter Corp headquartered in Cambridge...so what was that you were saying again?
- Jazzillion, on 10/25/2007, -2/+6Can we get a digg fund raiser going so we can name a stadium Goatse?
All these companies are ripping our ***** open through our wallets for glorified publicity anyways. We might as well pay for the names out of pocket and cut the profit margin. - secretivecoward, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3University of Phoenix sucks...
- tdogg241, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3"maxi pad shoot off"
I'm sure there's people out there who'd pay good money to see that and be sorely disappointed. - damndj, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3It may be called Invesco Field, but it will always be Mile High..
- skifreak107, on 10/24/2007, -2/+5Pro Player Stadium Fruit of the Loom Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins COMPANY BANKRUPT N/A
Fruit of the Loom is bankrupt? - jfowler27, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I noticed that too.
- MRintheKeys, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Apparently you are equally as meaningless.
- inactive, on 10/24/2007, -1/+4That one is my favorite one. The Arizona Cardinals were so insistenton getting a new stadium (with good reason) and one of the reasons that they gave was that they had no identity because they were playing in a college stadium. Then they build a state of the art (perhaps THE most modern) stadium and what do they do? The sell the naming rights to an online college, thus giving the stadium a colleger name.
Seriously, I have no problem with making money wherever you can, but perhaps this was a case where sacrificing a million or so a year was worth it to take the second highest offer. - debonarion, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3I always thought Monster Park was named by Monster.com, not Monster Cable. Looks like they should have named it Monster Cable Park, haha!
- tape, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3this list is from at least 6 years ago. many things have probably changed.
- bobbarkerbilly, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3While it doesn't fall under the catagory of company branded, the renaming of the Anaheim Angels to The Los Angeles Angels is worth noting. Translation: "The The Angels Angels"
- gendjinn, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3I'm more disgusted by the fact that these payments are tax deductible.
- crapmatic, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3I actually feel dirty at the thought of going to these corporate-named stadiums... it feels like going to some sort of timeshare sales event or a "fun" corporate-sponsored meeting. It's a nagging reminder of the power structure of corporate entertainment. ***** that.
- travistubbs, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2I wish companies would leave stadium names alone. How many people even remember "Candlestick Park"? By changing the name of a historic ballpark/stadium, you have effectively wiped out that ballpark's or stadium's history.
Our downtown baseball stadium (in Houston, Texas) has been through a lot of changes. "Enron Field", "Astros Field", "Minute Maid Park". It's original proposed name? "The Ballpark at Union Station" as the old Union Train Station use to be at this location. I wouldn't mind it being called something like the Ballpark at Union Station, presented by CompanyNameHere, but the companies want their name to stand out. Why not compromise? Let's name it the Minute Maid Ballpark at Union Station. It's a mouth-full, but it works for both the company and purists. - ShuttleDisaster, on 10/24/2007, -1/+3you clown, why the hell do you think its called wrigley field? advertising beginning in the 1920s
- MrVictor, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Yea but it isn't worth it for the ***** fans. Bank of America Stadium? WTF!!
- frostmonkey, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2hah remember when it was the Paladium?
- jfowler27, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2It is safe compared to the old King"tiles fall from the ceiling"dome.
- jcblitz, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Wow, I had no idea fruit of the loom was bankrupt.
- tape, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3that's because Qwest Field didn't exist 6 years ago when this list was made.
- skifreak107, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Used to?
- CACuzcatlan, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2The Great American Ballpark is the best use of a corporate name. I didn't even know it was sponsored because it sounds like a real baseball stadium name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_American_Ballpa ... - tehnico, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2In Toronto The Skydome's name was changed to the Rogers Center for $25 million CAD.
But they also threw in the stadium. - crapmatic, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Well at least the Wrigley name stood for decades and became part of history, while today's stadiums rotate through the SBC/Reliant/Verizon names faster than a crackhead goes through money.
- counter22, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Naming rights on the stadiums is just as bad as naming all the college football bowl games. Some of those are just really lame. I mean, who really wants to play in the PapaJohns.com Bowl!?!?
- mvanwing, on 10/24/2007, -2/+4Wow, M & T is really getting a deal! I wish I could name a stadium for $5 a year.
- PFinn, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3So if i was super rich i could name a stadium after myself for a couple years for around 1mil.... seems like a fun investment
- bigtedshred, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I'm still all for the Pink Taco Stadium http://digg.com/football/Pink_Taco_Stadium_New_Hom ...
but of course, they decided against it: http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2006/08 ... - vaguilera, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I'm sure Gaylord Entertainment pulls more than that.
- strafefire, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Forgot AMWAY arena for the Orlando Magic
- ELCad, on 10/24/2007, -3/+5Just $5 for M&T Stadium in Baltimore. Damn, I wish I had know it was so cheap.
- spikes, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2They forgot the Rogers Center here in Toronto, HORRIBLE NAME! We Canadians are already sick of Rogers, and they had to go and buy out the Toronto SkyDome and rename it to that *****. They could of at least made a compromise and called it Rogers SkyDome or something. Instead they change the name of something very well known and historic and mutilated it to some crappy boring "CompanynameHere Center" name that everybody hates.
- HRF1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1How about $100 million for stadium naming rights along with shirt sponsorships for Arsenal Football Club for 15 years. Sure beats any of US professional stadium deals. As for shirt sponsorships, I don't know why US professional sports teams don't do this. It's where the money is at, IMO.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Also, the reason Rogers isn't on the list is because they actually own the stadium, they didn't just buy the naming rights.
