- mojaam, on 11/04/2007, -1/+14Sports and technology, what a great combination. I would love to work there someday.
- mwolfzorn, on 10/30/2007, -1/+10I'm really unimpressed... There doesn't seem to be anything extremely sophisticated in the pictures. A bunch of multi-head computers, and tv screens for multiple cameras... The building I work at looks exactly the same...
I'd rather see an article talking about how their data travels via satellite, compression etc, not pictures of a standard datacenter and office... - BrokenVisage, on 10/30/2007, -2/+7Too bad SportsCenter is virtually unwatchable now.
- Punk27, on 10/30/2007, -1/+6What the *****? Maybe some people like sports AND Politics?
- statikuz, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4Cool pictures but not much on the actual technology - there was an article a while back that went into detail about the HD equipment that some TV station was using and that was pretty interesting.
Found it: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/30/what-it-takes ...
One of my local TV stations has their studio in the mall - all big plate glass windows so you can watch them film the newscasts, watch the editors do their thing, etc. - it's pretty cool. - 3tcp, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4ESPN sucks and cares more about the politics of sports than sports itself. It's like E! for sports. They could improve their coverage by using the 'serious technology' of a chalkboard so they can diagram x's and o's instead of talking about the drama between some superstar with an overblown ego and the owner of his team.
- jmpeagle, on 10/30/2007, -2/+6I know I am getting real tired of all these ESPN shows that ignore Ron Paul. Ron Paul could beat any team in any sport...even Mike Ditka.
Now could Ron Paul beat a Hurricane NAMED Ron Paul....now that I would watch. - 22justin, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4start showing Champions League in HighDef on television before you worry start streaming the rock-paper-scissors world series on cell phones
- Boing, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Did they take those pictures with a three year old cell phone?
- statikuz, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Right, because channels like Discovery and National Geographic run on a shoestring tech budget...
- bigfkncee, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2you were probably the kid that didn't get picked to play back in grade school, right?
- sgtbutterscotch, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I love sports but hate when people use this lame insult for someone who says something against sports. Maybe he just doesn't care for sports?
- garf12, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2That is so retarded. What possible reason do they have to only offer it on certain ISP's? "Your internet service provider doesn't carry ESPN360.com, so you are missing out on over 2,500 free live events. Click here to get it now!"
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -2/+4Now if only their broadcasts were worth watching for true sports fans. But unfortuantely, ESPN directors seem to think that people tune in to sporting events not to watch the action, but to watch OTHER PEOPLE WATCHING the action. That is the only explanation for the fact that all ESPN games now feature endless shots of the crowd actually while the play is going on!
- 0of1, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Been there... toured the whole place as part of a Virtual Set tech meeting in '06. One interesting observation was to see the massive # of XP PCs and only a couple of Macs in their design departments. At the time they were testing out Brainstorm on a PC running 64 bit windows for an encoded virtual set system. It was the most impressive tech trip of my life so far.
- terrizance, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2The video distribution technology that ESPN uses is the same as ABC.com's full episode viewer - http://www.movenetworks.com Watch the demo - it adjusts quality based on your bandwidth, up to 2 mbps I believe.
- Richandler, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1ESPN needs the Madden Cam channel for every football game.
- SirVantes, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Try living in Australia, ESPN's Champions League coverage looks like it was shot with a webcam. Their La Liga stuff is even worse, looks more like they're showing an animated gif on my TV instead of an actual television broadcast.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Dang, I still can't tell if that was a joke or not.
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2We can expect this money driven broadcasting for only Sports. Unfortunately, we don't see the same for educational, cultural or enriching content that's actually more relevant to the masses. Digg down all you want, but when I see an article like this it's just another sign of the great imbalances in our media distribution.
- utch, on 10/30/2007, -2/+3I think that we should put RFID tags in football players helmets along with the football and have live action tracking online.
- littlemarcho, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Nah, I played basketball and I am 6 foot 4... (not that I can prove it)
But, I just think the amount of money and time that goes into sport, as well as the fact that about 30 - 40% of a half hour news broadcast is dedicated to sport, is unjustified, in a way.
But in another way, it is justified, because thats the way the market forces work. News is advertising based, and sport brings in the eyeballs...
I am comfortable with the fact that my view is not that of the majority, but as they say, it is better to be insane in world thats gone mad - juliustan, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1ESPN is serious buissness
- scottb908, on 10/30/2007, -3/+3trust me I am one of the people that work on the gear at ESPN. These pictures do not do it justice. The technology behind the sceens is really something remarkable. Content on the other hand well....
- BobaFettTDG, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1That has to be a seriously stressful job.
- loconet, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1I don't care!, where is my HD Champions League!!!!?!?!
- tsunamisteve, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1Sports and technology are a great combo for coverage, but maybe not for the games themselves.
The NFL is worse off with human officials + instant replay. They're all afraid to make a call and for good reason: instant replay has made football a game of millimeters, which no human can be expected to process running around in that environment. The end result is unnecessarily long games, the same bad officiating (how is it that they blow so many REVIEWED plays?!?!?), and a slippery slope towards complete video officiating.
How American. If only we had badass, fit referees like you see in the World Cup. - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -2/+1Similar to the tech powering http://www.hifihdtv.ca
- vanscott, on 10/30/2007, -2/+1live action tracking? like a camera? or do you want to see players represented as Xs and Os to see if they match their playbooks?
- skunkman62, on 10/30/2007, -3/+1re-edited guy 2: what? wonder expression of humanity? ***** that dude. our political masters are protecting our freedom to enjoy sport, beer, and hot chicks. durka durka
- illwil, on 10/30/2007, -4/+2Why can't I pay for ESPN360.com? Screw ESPN for trying to force my ISP to fork over cash.
Note to network execs: Charge me the *consumer* If the content is worth anything, you will get compensated. - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -7/+1My isp doesn't support espn360.com not that i want it but if i did, I can't get it.
- jmpeagle, on 10/30/2007, -9/+1WTF does this have to do with Ron Paul. Buried for ESPN being a MSM shill refusing to report on the real news of the day.
VOTE RON PAUL - littlemarcho, on 10/30/2007, -13/+1sport = the greatest waste of time, and a great diversion from greater problems.
e.g.:
guy 1: wanna go out and protest against the upcoming war in IRAN
guy 2: what are you stupid? There is (insert irrelevant sporting contest) on this afternoon
guy 1: oh yeah, they have hot chicks there too
guy 2: yep, and we can drink beer
guy 1: sweet, sport, beer, hot chicks... I sure am glad our political masters are protecting us so we can enjoy this wonderful expression of humanity...
......
guy 2: what?
