- DuesExMachina, on 10/10/2007, -11/+38Umm......who really cares? Getting paid to beat the ***** out of each other has steroids written all over it...
- anteyekon4myst, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18We should have a SteroidLympics or something. The public wants to see faster, higher and stronger and the athletes are willing to do anything be that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I'm just glad they're willing to do it for my enjoyment.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21I'm more concerned that someone's name could be so close to Shrek.
- brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15So what. Somebody make the case that steroids shouldn't be allowed in MMA.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Maybe steroids are a defense? If you get kicked where your nuts used to be, it won't hurt.
- johnny23, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9This is Bob. Bob had bitch *****.
- cowboy77061, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8They broke the rules and got suspended. What more can you ask for?
WAR Fedor!!! - 00000, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Every one wants to have the leading edge
- sourwood, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The more needles Bonds sticks in his ass, the more home runs. More home runs = more entertainment. What's the difference?
- saddad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6There's a big discussion about this on some forums. Sherk is appealing the decision and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a false positive from all those GNC supplements or he could be coming off a cycle.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Won't someone think about the integrity of the sport?! This will be now known as the steroid era in the MMA. Now where's my trusty asterisk pen?
- droversoul, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I mean, if I want to watch a good fight, I'd actually prefer that it be between two steroid-riddled dudes.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I did a visual steroid-check on Sean Sherk and it was positive.
Furthermore on the same page they talk about Kevin Randleman and (!) Royce Gracie getting busted. Royce finally beat Sakuraba who is now an old man, and he gets busted for drugs. So bittersweet - sinurgy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No kidding, I mean really...who didn't see this one coming?!
- supernovasky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow.
AT first, I thought it said MDMA. I was like... "no *****, sherlock" - Tommy3000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Once we get a few years of steroids in MMA under our belts, they will start dying of heart failure like the WWE superstars started doing about a decade ago.
- brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But you ARE the best.
- ZzFDKzZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Cool to see MMA in the front page of Digg again.
- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's a sport. I agree people should be allowed to use steroids if they wish, but at the same time the organizations have every right to ban use and make testing a part of the agreement to participate.
If you allow steroids, everybody will have to take them to remain competitive, and that will lead many to destroy themselves and many others to just leave the sport entirely. The UFC has done very well by getting away from the freak-show aspect of their early days and making the sport more legitimate, so it entirely makes economic sense that keeping steroids out is a good move. - eQUIV, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well kudos to the UFC for sending out press releases and punishing fighters caught using steroids. Which is more than I can say about other sports and fighting organizations. However I think it's wise for Sherk to appeal this, because although his levels were higher than average, they weren't quite in the range of a positive for steroid use. If you watched his training special, you saw how he takes almost 70 pills daily (vitamins & supplements). Which to me is insane, and there's no telling what kind of effects these supplements combined with such a high level of training and athetisism can have on your hormones.
- marm0t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2While were at it, lets give them meth too and see how many make it to the end alive!
- KnightMareInc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3because its a sport.Thats the problem with US fans, they view mma as a spectacle and not a sport.
- Bigdelores16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Steroid use is common in all professional sports. Why should MMA be any different. I think both Sherk and Franca are amazing athletes who prior to this doping scandal have performed amazingly well. Look at Stephan Bonnar. He doped and performed like *****. Vitor had lightening fast hands until reality tv came calling and the roids started flowing. His choice, his defeat Take them...or don't....one thing is for sure...Men like Couture, Liddell, and Rampage are still ready to kick some ass whether you've been roiding or not.
- farblestans, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The UFC should definitely keep banning steroid use. I am shocked that I recognize some of these names of people caught using. UFC works best when it is clean, people wanting to see play acting already have wrestling.
The other disturbing thing in the article is the business about fighters being so poor they have to fight, no matter what. UFC is making money hand over fist, they don't need to become Bum Fights.
I like UFC. It caught my attention a couple of years ago and while I acknowledge it is still evolving, it needs to stick to the high road and not let things slip now, not later when a culture of steroid and other abuses has become established. - jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You retard Nandrolone is only found in trace amounts in the system(and has nothing to do with how hard you train) quit making ***** up to make it sound like you no what you' re talking about. The International Olympic Committee has set a limit of 2 ng per ml of urine as the upper limit, beyond which an athlete is suspected of doping. He had 6 times that amount so by your logic you think he trains 6 times harder than Olympic athletes and that explains the levels get a clue boy.
- saddad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think one of the people that train with him also mentioned a shoulder injury / surgery in which the doctor prescribed steroids. Could also be that.
- jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Firstly beating piss tests are easy so if he f'd up 1 in 40 that sounds like fairly reasonable odds. Secondly no one who claims higher natural levels is ever cleared. Steroids are modified or synthetic testosterone they look nothing like naturally occurring testosterone.
- redsox32, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They are illegal. by allowing them to be used the whole sport is breaking the law.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Give me a break why is this article trying to spin it like the recent tragedy in wrestling -that still had nothing to do with the situation
MMA fighters are prescribe legal steroids on a daily basis they just aren't allowed to have it in their system when testing times comes - this isn't a moral issue it's a fairness issue. Also Recently the few fighters mentioned are only the tip of the ice berg - and were in totally different Company's and divisions - where different rules and regulations apply when handling such an instance
Victor Belfrot
Arona
Kevin Randlemen
at one of Prides first ever PPV showing in the using were banned for one year in MMA competing due to steroid use
.
I really don't see the point of this whole thing even being brought up on digg. Baroni is a a mess and a superstar in his own mind -check his horrible lose record .........Royce Gracie -is washed up and over the hill
Considering JOSH Barnett was the first fighter to ever be outed due to major testing in the sport back during Randy Coutures first ever Heavyweight run back in the late early 2000 goes to show that the system works -IF YOU DO STEROIDS YOU WILL GET FOUND OUT AND BANNED
Nuff said .. - coolta1023, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Sherk is appealing the test on August 6th. I am expecting this to all be a mistake because Sherk only had a Nandrolone level of 12ng/mL. A normal athlete has a level of 6 ng/mL and Sherk isn't normal. He trains his ass off everyday, cuts weight, and takes over 20 supplements. Royce Gracie had a level of around 50 ng/mL for Nandrolone because he was actually TAKING steroids. Now you guys can judge whether or not Sherk is taking roids.
- ChiSox219, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bonds isnt entertainment, the majority of people are repulsed by him, not entertained, just see the polls on ESPN. MMA is just like cycling, so many people are cheating, that it really doesnt even matter anymore
- Jacenjames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Simple, I was created and continues to be a sport where the best fighter and the best style are determined. If you need the riods then your not the best.
- thegiraffe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3This poster is absolutely right. Fighters don't care about bodybuilding, they use steroids to recover faster. A single day of MMA fight training can leave you so sore you can barely move, but professional fighters have to train with that intensity all week. Steroids are the quick fix that lets them go all out in their training.
- jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Your exactly right and anyone who says steroids don't make a world of difference has never done a cycle. The right combination of steroids makes you almost super human. You can work out harder than you ever had before wake up the next morning and do it again no pain and zero recovery time.A juicer vs a non juicer has a huge training advantage.
- jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If you watch UFC All Access which outlined his daily workout routine there would be no doubt in your mind that he was using just to recover each day.
- eQUIV, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well with the UFC handing out 1 year suspensions for steroid use, it's doubtful this is going to become anything like the problems with proffesional wrestling who basically polices themselves in respect to steroids with their own internal program. In wrestling it's been said that steroid use is also directly and indirectly encouraged since it's not really a sport and is based more on appearance. Also the wrestlers are warned when they're about to be tested so they can take steps to ensure a clean test.
- brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Assumption of risk.
- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Athletes use steroids?! Holy *****, stop the presses!!!
- Thujone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The UFC isnt handing out suspensions, that is the California Commision barring them from competition.
- droversoul, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I like it.
- MrNastyOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you could take a pill that helped you be more successful at your desk job, wouldn't you?
Would we expect these MMA athletes to do any differently? - brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They're not illegal if prescribed by a doctor, they're just not allowed in MMA.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Your male hormones actually decrease with strenuous activity because you are burning them up.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You are an idiot if you think altering your hormone levels can't harm you. Even women who take small amounts of female hormones to prevent ovulation (the pill) eventually start forming cysts on their ovaries and get increased risk of various cancers.
If you are really that dumb then I hope you are taking lots of steroids for the sake of the gene pool. - brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1from wikipedia: "Assumption of risk" is a defense in the law of torts, which bars a plaintiff from recovery against a negligent tortfeasor if the defendant can demonstrate that the plaintiff voluntarily and knowingly assumed the risks at issue inherent to the dangerous activity participated in.
If you're a pro athlete taking steroids to keep up, you're assuming risk. It's your problem, not ours.
And why so quick to insult my intelligence? - brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, maybe if MMA was a bodybuilding competition. MMA isn't about overcoming the pain of training, it's about fighting and being the best at beating somebody to a pulp. If you can do that, then by definition you are "The Best" with or without steroids.
- brandoj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't question the ability to restrict steroid use - that's the liberty of contract at work. As to whether it's good for the sport, which was the crux, you make a valid point. Even so, I think pretty much everybody knows that UFC was more fun to watch back during the freak-show early days - so maybe it doesn't make good economic sense. The taming of the UFC has lead to other market entrants that are encroaching on them as we speak.
- jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only trouble with that is the amounts doctors are allowed to prescribe you is usually 10 - 20 times lesser amounts than a juicer would use. So you they would be able to tell the difference.
