- freeridstylee, on 07/13/2009, -1/+39Yea it seems to me that PPV killed boxing as a major sport, and turned it into more of a niche thing. If MMA wants to make it big time it is essential for them to have good free fights.
- fakeguy, on 07/13/2009, -1/+28Im gonna go have a Coors Light.
- fsufanizzle, on 07/13/2009, -0/+22Once Fedor signs they will have to get some more talent in the Heavyweight division, Fedor would clean it out with how weak it is.
- fanfablebig, on 07/13/2009, -1/+18I was shocked when Dana let UFC 75 air on spike. and that was a title fight between Rampage Jackson and Hendo. bisping and hammill was on the card also along with Cro Cop. i gained a lot of respect for Dana after that.
- VisualRhetoric, on 07/13/2009, -31/+46Dana White is a douche bag.
- mysportsrumors, on 07/13/2009, -3/+18I'd definitely watch more UFC if there were some quality free fight nights. Till then I'll see whatever comes on when I'm at the bar.
- jsuther, on 07/13/2009, -0/+15I'd agree, pay per view for boxing was well established by the time I was growing up and might have taken an interest in watching boxing. As a kid I never really saw any boxing on TV so I took no interest in that sport. I think boxing lost an entire generation of viewers due to them focusing on short term profits.
- kwansolo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+13"White said he expects to sign Fedor Emelianenko, the Russian superstar whom he has long but futilely chased, in the near future. Emelianenko has a fight against Josh Barnett on Aug. 1 for Affliction, but White said he’s confident he’ll be able to reach a deal to finally bring Emelianenko to the sport’s biggest stage."
I'll believe it when I see it, but that would be all kinds of awesome. - tman84, on 07/13/2009, -2/+12I've heard multiple candid interviews and he's anything but. Guy believes in his sport and promotes the hell out of it. don't believe everything you hear from bums like Ortiz
- ontain, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9Isn't this what made wrestling so popular in the late 90's? they went from only good matches and title fights in PPV to having belts switch on free tv and superstars out also. they drew much more fan support than they previously had and became mainstream.
- browntownslumin, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9Anderson Silva only fought one fight before getting a title shot.
- xDynaBlade, on 07/13/2009, -3/+11According to the article, he's a pretty nice guy.
- mantis108, on 07/13/2009, -3/+9It's not fake, tool.
- TheBigBad, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7Boxing is dead (not to mention boring), long live the new champ, MMA.
- trendygamer, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7Are we talking about the same Dana White? Pretty much known for placing an enormous level of importance on increasing the bottom line at almost any cost? I'm not saying that's wrong; in fact it's his duty as head of a corporation.
I'll believe it when I see fights like Lesnar v. Mir on network television...otherwise I can't imagine him taking his true top fights off pay-per-view. Otherwise I have a feeling "good fights" will be restricted to middle of the card level bouts. - anillop, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5PPV didn't kill boxing, Don King killed boxing. You can only watch so many fixed fights before you will completely give up on a sport.
- constantine111, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5look you don't need big names to have good network TV fights. look at the last UFC Fight Night, probably one of the best fights this year with clay guida vs diego sanchez. anderson silva has also fought 2 times on free network tv. if you put good fighters you will get good fights.
- TheBigBad, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6The smart thing for White to do would be to charge $19.99 for a PPV event instead of the $45+ charged now (I just paid $55 on dish). I would get every PPV UFC event at that price instead of just the occasional ones I get now. The number of people buying the event would triple at minimum, more money would be made than at the current price point and the gaudy numbers would allow him to charge advertisers premium prices when airing events on free television. In the near future you are going to see an MMA/UFC channel just like the Golf channel and NFL channel.
- tamman2000, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6Well, MMA has a flatter pay scale. the headliners don't make as much as a boxing headliner, but fighters on the undercard at UFC events make TONS more than undercard boxers.
I feel better supporting the MMA model than the boxing one... - jordandev, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4HORRIBLE analogy. NBA is a league. UFC is a league. The Lakers and Yankees are teams. MMA is a sport. Basketball is a sport. NBA should say Basketball if UFC should say MMA...
- Ryan0617, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Lesnar was reported to get over $3million for the mir fight alone as he will get PPV% and sponserships. This includes his $400k fight fee.
- PowderedToasty, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5Why?
- hybridcreation, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Lesnar reportedly made half a million dollars for his win over Randy Couture. The bonuses for Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and Knockout of the Night for Saturday were $100,000. It's not NFL or NBA money, but chump change? No way.
No one gets into fighting to drive a Bentley or live in the Hollywood Hills. If so, they chose the wrong career path. From what I have seen of past fights, 40-60 thousand is about average for a non-main event win. Multiple that times 3-4 fights a year, plus endorsements and these dude definitely aren't hurting. - hybridcreation, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4It was actually the Ultimate Fighter finale, but yeah, that Guida/Sanchez fight was insane. It just happened and already got voted #13 all-time on the UFC Ultimate 100 list that they showed leading up to 100.
- JigoroKano, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4I'm gonna go jump on your wife.
- hybridcreation, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Yeah, all of those fixed fights, corruption and greed sure were classy. I say "were" as in past tense...you know, like boxing's relevance.
- harpoonhank420, on 07/13/2009, -2/+5Then do it you nob
- Kvasaari, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3FTA: "White has long seen the future and predicted that the UFC would surpass sports staples such as the NFL in the U.S. and soccer worldwide in popularity."
Bigger than NFL? Sounds optimistic but it's US only so it's possible. But nothing will surpass football (soccer) in foreseeable future. - hybridcreation, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3No, but it's the only sport I can think of that has been completely invalidated by them.
- PowderedToasty, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I think we can all agree that Dana White is doing a damn good job.
- akamurph, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I don't get all you Brock-haters... You know he was the champ in college wrestling? Pretty much had nowhere to go from there and was offered probably millions to do that fake wrestling crap so he said sure. What's even better is he quit getting paid all that money for nothing to get into real fighting. The guy has talent and I hope he gets some more fights in before they put him up against Fedor.
- hybridcreation, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Ask Michael The Mouth how fake Hendo's right hook was.
- hybridcreation, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Another idiot professing his fantasies to the world. Aren't there chat rooms for that?
- falser, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4You want to know the future of boxing? Ask any kid younger than 20 years old how many active boxers they can name, and then how many UFC fighters they can name. Boxing will be practically a dead sport in the US within 10 years because literally nobody's watching it anymore.
On a side note, if White is deliberately building Lesner up to be a bad-guy and then signs Fedor to come in an "save" the UFC by smashing Lesner him to pieces... well, then the guy is freaking brilliant. - YouRookies, on 07/13/2009, -2/+5It will happen eventually. Look how fast MMA is growing. Digg me down, but I think MMA has the POTENTIAL to surpass the NFL and the NBA. Until the NFL/NBA have European teams or Chinese Teams, those countries aren't going to care. Those big leagues are only stuck in the US. With MMA, you have fighters coming from all over the world similar to the Olympics. I know Dana White believes in this too which why he is aggressively trying to get fighters from all over the world.
- 33PercentGod, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2This is what happened to the WWE after McMahon killed off any competition. Back in the 90's when it was Nitro vs Raw,you would have main events with major title changes. Now they only have people drop the straps on PPV,making it pointless to get excited to see most matches on cable.
- Namakemono, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3What's with all of the homophobia in this thread? I'll bet they pop wood while watching these sweaty muscular men wrestle around. If you like men, don't hide it. We understand. It's the year 2009 for *****'s sake.
- 33PercentGod, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2It's easy akamurphakamurph,
People make up rules in their heads that fighters should be having to change up their techniques and having these breath taking fights against good competitors. Brock steps in the ring and the gorilla takes you out and wins. A win in the book is a win,no matter how much "heart" or technique is in it. The fact that Brock can come in there and beat these people shows that they need to step up their training, not that Brock isn't a "real fighter". You think I would be having the fights GSP does if I could get into the ring and punch someone out like Lesnar with my giant hands and strength in the 2nd round?
A W is still a W no matter how much you try to down play it and that's why Lesnar has the belt.
Here comes the pain! - downneck, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4he's a *****.
- alpha94, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I think we see plenty of good MMA fights for free. There's a pretty regular schedule of Fight Night Live's with big name fighers and the ultimate fighter show always has 1-2 fights an episode.
- AtomicTheory, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Or just stream it live of one of a bazillion websites.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4Your parents porking look like two men having sex but one of them doesn't want to.
- chaos7, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3lyoto machida and anderson silva are the best
- Jeebugorn, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2indeed. back in the day i remember missing a show on tv one week and was like...oh well, its the day after the ppv, nothing big is gonna happen...and then found out the title changed hands and was like WTF?
- FireStorm82, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2day after? try 40 minutes after a fight on a good private site
- Decimit, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Wow. You have no idea how network or basic cable works do you?
- Jeebugorn, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3you must not watch alot of UFC fights then
- unclefire, on 07/13/2009, -4/+6This is not the WWF (or WWE) dude. UFC MMA is real.
- wildmick83, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3I don't see Fedor signing, and I think the Heavyweight division in the UFC is pretty good, or at least better than Middleweight. Mir, Couture, Nog, Lesnar, Carwin, Kongo(who would be really good if he had a ground game), Valasquez, Dos Santos, Herring, Gonzaga, and my boy Mirko... Heavyweight really isn't as bad as people think... Middleweight, though, is pretty scarce...
