- dace86, on 07/24/2008, -2/+50Dan Osman (February 11, 1963 – November 23, 1998)
He died on November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a "controlled free-fall" jump from the Leaning Tower rock formation in Yosemite National Park. The failure was investigated by the National Park Service with assistance from Chris Harmston, Quality Assurance Manager at Black Diamond Equipment. Harmston concluded that a change in jump site angle probably caused the ropes to cross and entangle, leading to the rope cutting by melting.[2] Miles Daisher, who was with Osman when he made the jump, stated that the ropes used in his fatal jump had been exposed to inclement weather - including rain and snow - for more than a month before the fatal jump, but that the same ropes were used for several shorter jumps on the previous and same day, this was said to be his last jump before he retired - TomFrost, on 07/24/2008, -1/+31He JUMPED.
He ***** JUMPED!

This guy is a legend. - BelleOfPiru, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13I saw his documentary on TV (Discovery I believe), they quote him saying that whenever he died he wanted it to be while doing what he loves.. jumping or climbing, he got his wish.

- snafflepaffle, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11***** he was going to "retire". That guy had pure adrenaline for blood. There was no way he was going to just sit on a couch for the rest of his life.
It's sad that he left a wife and a daughter, but it was always going to be that way. Something was going to get him in the end and it wasn't going to be old age.
The way I see it, everyone has a certain number of crazy ***** things they can do before one kills them. That's why I'm mostly retired from crazy ***** stunts. Done just enough to say I did it, not enough to die. - inactive, on 07/24/2008, -4/+15HOLY *****, that is AMAZING!
- Ridgeliner7, on 07/24/2008, -3/+14This is simply amazing video!

- hydratedsquash, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Dan Osman owns the restaurant where the Spartans dined.
- waxoff, on 07/24/2008, -0/+7For a guy with nuts the size of basketballs he moves fast.
- OldJesser, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8Well, should we have needed to survive by rapidly climbing the walls of mountains and cliffs, I can assure you who would be favored in the genetic pool.
- pjpereira, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6he was crazy
- KillerLettuce, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Some of us are born with the Ninja already in them. Dan was one of them.
- MrRabbit, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Watching the video all I was thinking was "how long could this guy possibly have left to live?" I'm very disappointed to see that it was much less than I thought it was. But him dying because of a failed rope just doesnt seem fair.. Watch 1:10 of the video.. go ahead I'll wait...
...
No part of his body was touching the rock!! So awesome, ***** that rope. - mcalica, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5IDK about evolved...he DOES move like a monkey. Crazy stuff.
- carnage, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5you've obviously never rock climbed before. if you do what is safe, and know exactly what you are doing, you will be fine. all gear can literally be used to tow trucks and is 100% safe when used correctly. Dan osman knew what he was doing also. he had done this jump, and many others before. he did the homework, knew hes gear would hold. the reason he died is because of a last minute change in his jumping angle, which changed the way the ropes ran. Dan was an extreme guy, died because of an extreme circumstance.
if you try to say all rock climbers are unsafe because of him, you are wrong. what dan osman did was nothing like rock climbing. he just happened to be using the same gear in a spot where ppl climb. - TheBenSimpson, on 07/24/2008, -0/+41:10 = Awesome
- gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4dude died jumping off a cliff with only rope tied to him.
- thegrantman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Even dead he has more balls than I do.

- ThomasNewman1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2For a lot of people, myself included, rock climbing is about more than getting exercise.
- quanfer, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2i would not climb a ladder that high
- clarient, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2While still insanely dangerous to do it without ropes, the route he's on is called Bear's Reach and it's only rated a 5.7. For an experienced climber like Osman, it's practically like climbing up a ladder.

- 032483, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3I'm no mountanologist but if one of those rocks breaks doesn't he die?
- Jexie, on 07/24/2008, -0/+25.10 is not hard by any stretch of the imagination but its not a complete beginners climb at all...5.7 is.
"You all would ***** a brick if you ever saw me climb. I mean, if you all think this is amazing..." -- are you joking? You sound like a complete and total douchebag. - stuholtz4, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Not that this isn't amazing but this route is only rated at 5.7 so its not the most difficult but at that speed.... damn
- digidelia, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2this guy did not die rock climbing though. he would literally throw himself off a cliff and let the climbing ropes stop him
