Dan Osman Amazing Speed Climbing watch!
youtube.com — Dan Osmanwas an Asian American extreme sport practitioner, known for the dangerous sports of "free-soloing"and "rope jumping", for which his record was over 1000 feet / 304,8 meters. He died on November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a "controlled free-fall" jump from the Leaning Tower rock formation in Yosemite

- DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -3/+2double post, sorry. Bury this!
- DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -9/+1This is not amazing.
That is a 5.7
Just to give you a sense of what that means, a 5.10 is considered a beginner climb, unless you are completely out of shape, in which case a 5.7 would be more up your ally.
The only thing that could be considered "amazing" is that he did it with no rope. That may be more on the "stupid" side though.
To add to it, that wall isn't even completely vertical, the "Jumps" (actually called Dynos) aren't that impressive, the hand grip are huge.
I'm sure that I will get dugg down for this, especially since my next comment is about to be very cocky.
You all would ***** a brick if you ever saw me climb. I mean, if you all think this is amazing...
This guy seems to only be famous because he does this ***** without a rope, which as I said above is not impressive to me, just stupid. It was so stupid that it killed him. Imagine what he could have done if he stopped being so cocky and just tied into a rope... He was obviously not in to taking proper safety precautions and people like that should not be encouraged nor admired- plantfood, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2post some vids?
- Jexie, on 07/24/2008, -0/+25.10 is not hard by any stretch of the imagination but its not a complete beginners climb at all...5.7 is.
"You all would ***** a brick if you ever saw me climb. I mean, if you all think this is amazing..." -- are you joking? You sound like a complete and total douchebag. - DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Sure. I just got a new camcorder so I'm down. Do you want speed climbing up top ropes ( I don't do tall problems without tying in) or do you want difficult boulder problems or do you want dynos? Just send me a message to remind me if you care enough.
- DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2I figured that comment would come off that way. It was a douchey comment. Still, it just bothers me a bit that this OLD video of one of this guys least impressive climbs receives this much recognition on Digg when the only "impressive" thing is that he has no rope, something that I find to be offensive and dangerous.
- DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1In the meantime, check this video out...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKNQkphPkxc&feature ...
Same guy, this time tied in and doing a 5.14
Quality isn't great but you get the idea.
If you thought that speed run was "amazing" then this will make you ***** a brick. - clarient, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1You're right, it was a douchey comment. A 5.10 is by no means a beginner climb, especially when that beginner has little developed tendon strength in their hands or fingers.
The only people who would ***** a brick to see you climb are people who aren't familiar with the sport. Odds are you're probably one of those assholes showing off on the wall and in general ruining the experience for everybody else. - plantfood, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I would be interested in seeing some of your vids! - gn0stik, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4dude died jumping off a cliff with only rope tied to him.
- dace86, on 07/24/2008, -2/+50Dan Osman (February 11, 1963 – November 23, 1998)
He died on November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a "controlled free-fall" jump from the Leaning Tower rock formation in Yosemite National Park. The failure was investigated by the National Park Service with assistance from Chris Harmston, Quality Assurance Manager at Black Diamond Equipment. Harmston concluded that a change in jump site angle probably caused the ropes to cross and entangle, leading to the rope cutting by melting.[2] Miles Daisher, who was with Osman when he made the jump, stated that the ropes used in his fatal jump had been exposed to inclement weather - including rain and snow - for more than a month before the fatal jump, but that the same ropes were used for several shorter jumps on the previous and same day, this was said to be his last jump before he retired- Insolent, on 07/24/2008, -17/+2People should not be allowed to do dangerous things such as rock climbing. There are other ways to get exercise and remain healthy without risking killing yourself and leaving friends and loved ones behind. In this nanny state, doing stuff with your own body without prioritizing other peoples' interests first is completely unacceptable.
- Labyrinth336, on 07/24/2008, -3/+4so says the liberal
- carnage, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5you've obviously never rock climbed before. if you do what is safe, and know exactly what you are doing, you will be fine. all gear can literally be used to tow trucks and is 100% safe when used correctly. Dan osman knew what he was doing also. he had done this jump, and many others before. he did the homework, knew hes gear would hold. the reason he died is because of a last minute change in his jumping angle, which changed the way the ropes ran. Dan was an extreme guy, died because of an extreme circumstance.
if you try to say all rock climbers are unsafe because of him, you are wrong. what dan osman did was nothing like rock climbing. he just happened to be using the same gear in a spot where ppl climb. - TomFrost, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4define:"Free country"
- plantfood, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3why so serious?

- DanPlainview, on 07/24/2008, -7/+1Rock climbing is not unsafe if the proper precautions are taken.
Saying that Rock climbing is unsafe is a lot like saying eating red meat is unsafe. Sure, it may be unsafe if you don't ***** cook it first...
This guy obviously did not take the proper precautions and he payed with his life for that. - snafflepaffle, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11***** he was going to "retire". That guy had pure adrenaline for blood. There was no way he was going to just sit on a couch for the rest of his life.
It's sad that he left a wife and a daughter, but it was always going to be that way. Something was going to get him in the end and it wasn't going to be old age.
The way I see it, everyone has a certain number of crazy ***** things they can do before one kills them. That's why I'm mostly retired from crazy ***** stunts. Done just enough to say I did it, not enough to die. - digidelia, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2this guy did not die rock climbing though. he would literally throw himself off a cliff and let the climbing ropes stop him
