- Estrange, on 01/27/2009, -0/+15yea in high school it was fun to come in contact with teh cheerleaders!
- Tyrghast, on 01/28/2009, -0/+15It takes a court decision to keep parents from suing other parents or the school if one girl accidentally drops another girl, etc.?
- SportsAnna, on 01/27/2009, -3/+17I'm sure it really stings to get sucker-punched with a pom-pom...
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+13and level 1 is that they are too old for him.
- allocate, on 01/28/2009, -0/+11Is this really a surprising decision? I mean, it IS a contact sport. It's the kind of sport where you necessarily consent to some touching by participating.
- Bisquick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+10The ruling makes sense, cheerleading is a physical activity and can be accompanied by serious risks (like being flung in the air and hopefully caught by a bunch of high schoolers).
- pitchblack16, on 01/27/2009, -1/+11This is wrong on about 42 levels.
- thesmrt12004, on 01/28/2009, -1/+10I love Wisconsin
- mk2ja, on 01/28/2009, -2/+9FTA: "Researchers at the University of North Carolina have found that two-thirds of the roughly 100 cases of "catastrophic" sports injuries among high school girls since 1982 have involved cheerleading."
Yeah, but mainly because the left guard was too busy watching the cheerleaders and let his QB get sacked. - consterXnation, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6I consider anything where people toss you up twelve feet into the air and then (hopefully) catch you to be a "contact sport", so I agree.
- ddgromit, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6Yes.
- RiMac, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5Exactly right. Contact sport is not to be confused with collision sport.
- karlw, on 01/27/2009, -5/+10When did the Supreme Court say cheerleading was a sport???
- Spoomeister, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5The many short films I've watched with cheerleaders in them, have made it very, very clear that cheerleading is a contact sport.
- fuzzybeard, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5I read this thread for the smart-ass comments; as usual, my fellow Diggers didn't let me down!
Ah, to be 15-16 years old again, but with the accumulated knowledge of myself at 43...*sigh* - thejokker, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4tuesday
- bgolds99, on 01/28/2009, -2/+6Yeah, I'm really not that opposed to this at all. I'm pretty sure there are more injuries in cheerleading than any other varsity sport...
- Swivelstick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3But correct on 69 other levels
- Minaki, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3So you've never seen a Cheerleading competition scoresheet then?
- Minaki, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2Sport (n):
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
Physical? Check.
Rules? Check.
Competitive? Check.
It's a sport. - mmfood, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2I guess you could call it a contact sport. Saying that it isn't a sport at all is just ignorant. I don't enjoy anything about cheerleading other than the uniforms. Just because there's no ball or something else you hit or throw, doesn't mean it isn't a sport.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2Sport fishing: Not a sport.
- Swivelstick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2Only if I can chuck the goddamn tubist in the air
- Minaki, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Then don't make stupid comments that you can't back up.
- Midtowner, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2This isn't about some legal "contact sport" rule. This is about assumption of the risk. They're saying that cheerleading, like football is an inherently risky activity and that when one chooses to participate in that activity, they have assumed the risk of sustaining the sorts of injuries associated with that sport.
- ASSASSYN360, on 01/28/2009, -2/+4"Cheerleaders are dancers gone retarded."
- igyigyigy, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2God bless America
- TaeBoX, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1Got something against bears? Racist.
- undervalued, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Your comment makes no sense on multiple levels, including grammatical.
- coreydoucorey, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Unbelievable! Host is down. http://manxl.org

A Finnish ice hockey team based at Vaasa Arena (capacity 4600), Vaasa. Established in 1939. Full name of the club is Hockey Team Vaasan Sport OY.
Just because the definition fits doesn't mean it's what he was thinking of. - prophet5, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1I played the Sousaphone in marching band... good luck throwing me in the air...
- kildurin, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1Same here. Those damn things are heavy. At least the brass ones are.
- undervalued, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Well, I'm off to tackle some cheerleaders.
- brandita, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1When I did cheerleading back in the day, we dropped a girl and she lost 3 years of her memory. This was cause she made contact with the floor. I think the idea is their is an inherent threat of injury like other contact sports and that when you participate you are assuming the risk so the school or whatever is not held liable.
- prophet5, on 01/28/2009, -1/+1Here's a clue for the sue-happy parents out there - if you don't want your little girl to get hurt, don't let her cheerlead.
Also, for those of you who think that "ambulance chaser" is a compliments, are other things you shouldn't let your girl do:
1) Tap-dance (could cause shin-splints)
2) Ballet (causes bad foot problems)
3) Drive (those cars could injure people)
4) Breed (we don't need more people like you)
Thanks, and now go kill yourself.
</sarcasm> - prophet5, on 01/28/2009, -1/+1Hey - this one time, at band camp....
- NMmagic, on 01/28/2009, -2/+2It's a step in the right direction. Soon Marching Band will be considered a sport.
- cpaterson89, on 01/28/2009, -2/+2cheerleading= an activity, sports involve direct, measurable competition against another team or individual
- Eris323, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0My daughter is a flyer for her cheerleading team and let my assure you that when another girl picks her up and tosses her in the air, she is taking more risks then most football players!! Have someone toss you in the air and miss catching you and then let us know how much "it really stings"
- cpaterson89, on 01/29/2009, -0/+0No, because I could care less
- dmorrison22, on 02/05/2009, -0/+0There is risk in Cheerleading, but no more than football or basketball. Basketball technically isn't a contact sport, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, same with cheerleading.
- Eris323, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0again..... try having girls toss you in the air and catch you and tell me it is a "social activity" and not a sport. the cheerleaders here have to go to the gym 5 days a week just to perform some of the truly amazing stunts they do!!
- Magniris, on 01/28/2009, -1/+0Represent. =D
