- newman8r, on 06/28/2009, -0/+29I was going to read it... but then I saw "7-part"
- Ultrace, on 06/29/2009, -2/+23No offense to the athletes, but this can be applied to all sorts of extracurricular (and even intracurricular) activities. I suppose this gets more coverage because it's easier for people to relate to the squandered potential of a great athlete, but how about the Chess or Science or other clubs where kids could actually further their intellectual learning--you know, what school was originally established for?
- danthepiercer, on 06/29/2009, -2/+20what the *****?
yeah, boo ***** hoo... a bunch of parents are pissed that the athletics dept of their kids school sucks.
how many ***** schools are struggling to actually hire teachers, afford supplies, and keep the doors open!?
how many schools cant afford programs for above average students who will actually contribute something meaningful to society one day, or on the other end of the spectrum, how many schools need funding for programs for kids who are slow?!
this article is a ***** joke! - t4ll3y, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15Yeah, we need that money for books and teachers. Sorry kids.
- nepidae, on 06/29/2009, -1/+14I weep for the poor athletes. This country needs to stop idolizing its intelligent and hardworking people and get back to worshiping athletes.
- ToxicBomber, on 06/29/2009, -2/+10Wait...a school that ACTUALLY puts its funding where it really matters, instead of pandering to and idolizing the physically gifted and mentally retarded athletes?!?
- TheR3dMenace, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7 Edna: Our demands are simple: a small cost-of-
living increase and some better equipment and supplies for
your children.
Audience: Yeah! Give it to them! etc.
Skinner: Yeah, in a dream world. We have a very tight budget; to do
what she's asking, we'd have to raise taxes.
Audience: Raise taxes? They're too high as they are. Taxes are bad.
etc.
Edna: It's your children's future.
Audience: That's right. Children are important. etc.
Skinner: It'll cost you.
Audience: No to taxes. My God, they're going to raise taxes. etc.
Edna: C'mon!
Audience: She makes a good case. Good point. etc.
Skinner: [rubs his fingertips together]
Audience: More taxes? The finger thing means the taxes. etc. - mksmothers, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9Schools would be better off if they cut all athletics.
- openthink, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7i know, a bit overkill...but each part is a distinct article so you can read any & get a sense, fwi
- DrDragun, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6And this is Boston, with one of the highest inner city graduation rates / SAT's in the country. The inner city is f'd up wherever you go.
- ImYourRealDad, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5You've never been out towards Roxbury, have you Dave? What about Mattapan? Lynn?
Crime doesn't "move" in one direction. It spreads. - alanocu, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Boston is a different city today than it was ten years ago when I moved here. There was a drive by shooting in front of my building last night. I live in the South End and hear more gunshots, police and ambulance sirens than ever before. School sporting events are non-existent to me. I don't see kids playing sports or wearing team uniforms at all. I use to see that in Rhode Island, but not here.
- morningmatters, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3You serious? A 2000 sq. feet condo in South End can easily run up to $1M, and the area is surrounded by tons of high end restaurants. If anything, the poor and drug dealers have been driven out from the South End in the last 10 years. There are two places where drive by shootings occur regularly around Boston: The Columbus road section of Dorchester and Roxbury. It's likely you are living in Dorchester and don't know what you are talking about.
- morningmatters, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3The school system is weird around Boston. You get two great public exam schools (boston/roxbury latin) which leech the best and brightest students/teachers in the city. The rest of the public schools suck.
Then you get the Wellesley and Newton, two wealthy boston surburbs which are competing against each other to see how much they can spend on their public high schools. The last time I checked Newton high is going to cost over $180 Million, some of which come from the state education budget, out of the same pool of money which is used to support the other schools such as the ones mentioned in this article. - Sin2k, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Yeah... I'm sure the teachers are rolling around in ***** piles of money while the poor athletes have to use old footballs...
- ne0codex, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Those who live in Boston should know that it's the hub of intellect and reason, not necessarily of sports--Celtics and Red Sox are the exception.
- SalmonGod, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Grades 3-10 I went to a small Indiana school system where the high school track was kept flawlessly repaired and even dug out and re-paved every 2 years, the football field fitted with expensive turf and meticulously maintained, the gymnasium floor re-painted regularly with glorious new school mascot designs, and just before I moved out they were building new tennis courts for a completely new program.
All this while we were using 30+ year old textbooks and ~15 year old computers in a school infested with cockroaches, asbestos, abusive or incompetent teachers, and a principal who I'm pretty sure was a power-tripping psychopath and pedophile - all amounting to a 65% graduation rate.
I have a really hard time feeling sorry for those Bostonian athletics. - ImYourRealDad, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3If you're a good enough player you'll be signed. If not, enjoy high school sports while it lasts.
Personally, I'd love to see a lot of sports programs taken out from schools. Use that money to invest back in the classroom so we can produce sharper minds, not better defensemen. If people are concerned about "psychical fitness programs" that schools apparently have to offer these days, partition some of those funds for the gym classes so kids can actually LEARN about what it means to be healthy.
My taxes aren't meant to fund football games and field hockey buses. They're to pay educators, purchase supplies, and keep the grounds clean. - jlian, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Who idolizes "intelligent and hardworking people"? I'm pretty sure athletes get way more worshiping.
- Y0tsuya, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Yep everybody wants a piece of the shrinking pie. Get in line.
- nepidae, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I feel kinda dirty doing this, but
/s
...
the s is for Swift - vapn420, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2athletics and team sports have their merits when it comes to developing a well rounded person, but I agree, people need to chill out with that ***** when you can't even afford to hire teachers.
- Rethcir, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1What are you trying to say about the pats B's and revs?
- EdLau, on 06/29/2009, -1/+2Wow this is a really long article.
- ne0codex, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1you
- protogenxl, on 06/29/2009, -3/+4Madness?
THIS IS BOSTON! - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0Anywhere you find a lot of urban pollution you'll find crappy schools.
- kydjester, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1this article is total bullsh*t - parker is a good coach - he's been around a while so his methods are old school. I am from the '08 graduating class at english. the field at Boston English is top of the line - probably the best field in Boston. Mayor spent about 1.5 million making it right infront of the school. I almost cried when I first played on it (starting centerfielder that game.) Then there's jim rice about (15) minutes away from boston english, it's like a mini fenway park, it even has a green monster and comfortable seats.
The real problem is the crowd support for our youth, no one watches each games any more and supports them. Every one is too distracted doing other things. There is lack of competition in the boston school system, no one works together or creates rivalries anymore, it's ither your good or your not... no "i'm going to get better" this year. Plus, the BPS system doesn't allow the coach to talk with players until 1.5 months before the season starts, that's total BS. Unless you have dedicated seniors on your team with high spirit your just not going to produce and motivate the talent that will produce a higher quality game... but who will train the seniors ?
i'm 23 and current play in boston park league. - ne0codex, on 06/29/2009, -2/+2Thank you <3
(no *****) - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0"well rounded person"? what the ***** does that even mean?
- plinstrot, on 06/29/2009, -1/+1Someone get Lipschultz. He'll sort this out.
- jrm125, on 06/29/2009, -2/+1Ahh....I'm so glad I live in Brighton. Old people and college students.
- Foureyedave, on 06/29/2009, -6/+4*****. Look into the facts that you're spouting before you run your mouth. Boston has kept pretty even crime statistics despite it's growth over the last decade. If anything the crime is moving out of the city and into surrounding towns. More police and ambulance sirens? Really? Great proof.
I can't be ***** to dive into a 7 part series, but I've got to defend my city.
The city isn't hiding anything:
