- iDoraemon, on 01/28/2008, -3/+34Picture of said "water cube" is 'shopped. I see neither smog in background nor marching communist army taking down student protesters in foreground
- petemcfraser, on 01/28/2008, -0/+30I'm assuming this cube will also be euthanized when they're done with it?
- tarquell, on 01/28/2008, -2/+27tell you what, that roof is going to piss off anyone trying to break backstroke records... it makes a huge difference not having straight guide lines to follow on the roof!!...love the diving area.
- hiPpymIck, on 01/28/2008, -0/+20i forgot that i always wondered how they kept in a straight line..
on Digg
you learn something new - that you didnt even realize you wanted to know - every day - Sartic, on 01/28/2008, -1/+17I want to pop those badly!
- WRXFiles, on 01/28/2008, -1/+14"The pool, where American Michael Phelps could become the first man to win eight gold medals at one Games"
The author obviously is a huge fan of either Michael Phelps, or the US athletes, that he worked so hard to find a place to squeeze in this essentially unrelated comment.... - jonathani1, on 01/28/2008, -7/+18Notice the Chinese soldiers in just about every picture. Swimming in the police state, baby!
- grimreaperev, on 01/28/2008, -1/+10Looks better from the inside than the outside.
- digggggggggg, on 01/28/2008, -2/+10They just have to put cops everywhere, don't they?
- CedEx, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8I also learned something today as well. Apparently from the article, birds don't land on transparent surfaces, so no poo from birds walking around. Though, they didn't address flying bird poo.
- erkokite, on 01/28/2008, -6/+14It actually seems pretty ugly.
- smurfsahoy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7Thats bs. I was a swimmer for a good 15 years, and yeah, high school kids use lines on the top of the building when they have them. Olympic swimmers, especially ones who just do backstroke, would be pretty lame to rely on crutches like that.
Might I remind you that records have been set many times in open air pools? Clouds are not exactly straight lines. Yet even little 10 year old kids can manage to not hit the lane lines outside. - LoveWidescreen, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7They will euthanize it more quickly than any other test subject on record.
- hsoj, on 01/28/2008, -1/+7Have you seen the renders of what it's supposed to look like at night?
http://www.tropolism.com/watercube_027_m.jpg - etx313, on 01/28/2008, -1/+7But is it filled with overpriced shiny self-hating PC's and Digital music players?!
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -4/+9By abusing human rights you to can host the Olympics! Cant wait for North Korea!
- Homerr, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4Innovative architecture. I support it.
- Morality, on 01/28/2008, -1/+5Congratulations
- Thex1138, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4Designed by Australian Architects
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3To summarize: if your stroke is straight, you won't veer into the other lanes.
- Aidanjalali, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3Technically it's not a cube because its sides are not of equal length.
But hell, don't listen to me, I could never think of building a big box with cellophane bubbles around it. - Skurt, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3Just got back from Beijing yesterday. Saw this building from the street and it looks pretty nice 'in real life' Didn't see the insides until this article. The streets are very clean in Beijing and the surrounding area in preparation of the Olympics, the TV blares the party line about how you should be good citizens and keep the city clean and not be rude to the foreigners.
Overall my impression after a week in China was they are very nice people and are proud of what they have accomplished.
Taxis are like controlled chaos and constant games of chicken and they all drive with their horns! ;) - Angostura, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3It's either that there are soldiers everywhere, or that the photo editor contrived to get them in every shot. Not sure which
- mattmy, on 01/28/2008, -1/+3damn communist and there fancy buildings
- unrequited, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Hah, tell me you guys just dugg-effect'ed reuters.
- baldgye, on 01/28/2008, -2/+4looks pretty dank on the inside, and pretty awful on the outside
- amenhotep, on 01/29/2008, -0/+21. They are security guards (no chinese soldier or police in gray uniform)
2. Western reporters have this habit to include these in every photo they take, in order to hint that China is a police state, but the ironic fact is that China has a lower police ratio than most countries. - smurfsahoy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2It looks like a big neuronal synapse.
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2For the Bubble-Boy Olympics ?
- 3tcp, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Praise be to Mao, this marvel is truly a testament to the glorious virtues of our beloved China and the selfless heroes that run it!
Chinese diggers, be sure to copy & paste this into your post if you don't want to be put on the list of people rounded up and banished from Beijing during the Olympics.. - inactive, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2So you get cancer as soon as you land or just by entering one of their buildings?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2This is for the Borg Olympics, right?
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it almost looks like America.
- drmangrum, on 01/28/2008, -1/+3Either these are really bad pictures or I just don't get it. What's the big deal? Looks kinda boring.
- uker, on 01/28/2008, -1/+3http://www.chineselives.info/2008/01/20/water-cube ...
More pictures - leerayIG88, on 01/28/2008, -2/+3Once you pop, you can't stop. *Pop*
- tarquell, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1well, i used to go 56 for 100 back, and i can say, it ***** me up when there were diagonal lines on the ceiling, open air pools are just as bad (im english but trained at mission viejo in Southern cal)...
perhaps not everybody is the same, but i would like to see stats on world records set in pools without straight lines on the ceiling. - apc3161, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1The inside is so beautiful. The outside makes me want to puke.
- amenhotep, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1just look at what your media have done to you you poor guy.
- Versh, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I'll second that. New materials need new designs, why build to the limitations of previous materials when the new stuff can allow such new elegant solutions. Modernism forever!
- secrity, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1It may not be very pretty, but it looks a WHOLE LOT better than the other iconic venue next to it -- the steel band building.
- secrity, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Great looking renderings.
- pe5t1lence, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I saw some of these pictures nearly a month ago when i was looking around google for the cube. I distinctly remember the tourists walking in front of it, and the soldiers by the pool (the far away and the close up) seem familiar. So I doubt these were taken earlier today.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1.....
- awflasher, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1I am in beijing but I did not see it yet. seems that I need to start for a look?
- Skurt, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Dug up the image from the tour bus window... The 'barracks' in front of the bubble building for reference.
http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bubbleeh0. ..." - LoveWidescreen, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1"Look! There's something going way over Harbinger's head! What does it say?!"
"It says --- 'Portal'??"
;) Just picking on you, Harbinger. Not everyone can get the reference. - SkippyDoorknob, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Kim Jong Ill has already won three dozen gold medals.
- dogstar0125, on 01/28/2008, -1/+2I would say absolutely ***** ugly.
