Minutes before the race began, as the TV cameras showed the horses being led around, my girlfriend (who is an accomplished rider) took one look at Eight Belles and said, "She's lame, she shouldn't race." If she could tell just from a few seconds on TV that something was wrong, then that filly's handlers have a LOT to answer for.
