- scoot2006, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4suspend?! i vote we get him a fight contract somewhere. that was a mean left.
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I agree with your sentiment but Hall is an ex-boxer, it'd be a bit of a backwards step for him.

- Dmilla16, on 04/22/2008, -8/+14am i the only one who read that as "Hairy Ball Punch"? yikes....
- stellarceltic, on 04/22/2008, -1/+11Yep. You are.
- sparql, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3At first glance, that is what I read too.
- NovaBandit, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6I read it as Halle Berry punch. Go figure.
- joey368, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Bad spoonerism.
- Cenobite, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Spad boonerism, you mean.
- DarkJesus, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Nope!
- asskicker32, on 04/22/2008, -9/+5Come on, there is just no room for violence in footy.
- RonnyIsRondo, on 04/22/2008, -2/+39I think he should get a reward. When was the last time the Austrailian Football League on ESPN? Bet most never even heard of it.
- lensman00, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4True, but ESPN was practically The Australian Rules Football Channel in its earliest days. I think ESPN's Jim Caple said it well:
"ESPN owes an enormous debt to Australian Rules Football, which filled large segments of programming in the days before the network had contracts with the NFL, NBA and baseball. There never was any explanation of the game's rules (the broadcasts were simply tapes of Australian broadcasts), leaving American viewers perplexed by the chaos on the field. My college friends and I spent many a night watching the odd broadcasts from Down Under, trying to figure out the rules and chuckling at the long-coated referees who signaled scores with as much precision and bravado as Robert DeNiro snapping out a gun in "Taxi Driver." It was the perfect sport to watch while drinking."
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/caple/030311.html- RonnyIsRondo, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2ESPN use to show anything anyone would let them. Have you heard Cheap Seats?
- DestroyFascism, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2" It was the perfect sport to watch while drinking."
Australian's already know that. That's why the "booze bus" is always 400 meters away from the field....
And why we park 500 meters away..: )
- SpeedyG, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1The thing is, ESPN tries to act like any sport that it never shows (and ESPECIALLY those that rival networks have the rights to) doesn't exist.
Before they had any rights to NASCAR, they acted like it didn't exist. Now that they don't show hockey, they act like it doesn't exist. The ONLY reason that there's any mention of it on ESPN is because of the neatly packaged, almost YouTube-esque video of someone getting clocked.
- lensman00, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4True, but ESPN was practically The Australian Rules Football Channel in its earliest days. I think ESPN's Jim Caple said it well:
- dema, on 04/22/2008, -0/+19The second punch was even better than the first... "Hey! you punched my teammate bas--"
- noots, on 04/22/2008, -0/+7the punch was actually pretty well disguised. I'd bet it would have gone unseen if it wasn't for cameras. (well that and the fact the dude would be knocked out on the floor)
- RonnyIsRondo, on 04/22/2008, -1/+10So your saying that if it wasnt for cameras recording it, we would have not seen it on tv? ODD
- noots, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1-,-

- anteyekon4myst, on 04/22/2008, -21/+7hypocritic americans. cry and whine about one guy breaking "rules" which may not or may not exist while they illegally occupy a country.
I dont know what's worse the whining or the hypocracy.- Misinformant, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5...or your spelling and grammar
- OffPiste, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3I think your poor grammar and punctuation is worse.
- aliendave, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5*facepalm*
- tdog138, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4I know something that is worse... this comment. Seriously, the first thing you think about after watching this clip is the Iraq war? Lighten up.
- renagadex2, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3god damn it. have you ever heard that 2 wrongs don't make a right?
and second of all...way to be a dick and completely intermingle sports and politics. - ElAssoWipo, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2hypocracy:
A democracy governed by hypocrites.
- anteyekon4myst, on 04/22/2008, -3/+2You guys can talk all the sh*t you want about my grammar or my segue from sports into politcs, but it doesnt change the facts. You're a nation of whiners.
- Trykt, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Oh goody, it's generalization time!
Your insults mean jack ***** coming from a nation of inbred criminals that Britain was so fed up with it dumped them on the most backwards island on the planet. I guess that doesn't explain why you guys get sand in your vaginas about any sort of violence in videogames, though. Anyway, thanks for vomiting your butthurtness about this controversy onto Digg.- anteyekon4myst, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1whiner. BTW..are you calling me Australian?.. I'm not..but atleast that's better than being called an American.
- akamurph, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I was going to say, I had a pretty good amount of respect for Aussies, I'm glad to hear you aren't from there. 3 guesses and the first two don't count you are from Canada? Gotta laugh at those Canadians, nothing better to do then be pissed off at the USA.
- anteyekon4myst, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2The fact that you keep responding to my absurdities just proves what a nation of insecure whiners you are.
- Rxbrent, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2Glad you checked the spelling this go round. One out of three isn't bad.
- Trykt, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Oh goody, it's generalization time!
- stevetrojanman, on 04/22/2008, -3/+3As for the debate on the ESPN show...is it really disputable that attacking a ref is not as unsportsmanlike as punching a player from the other team? If so, that's ridiculous...
- jlee2081, on 04/22/2008, -3/+13I think this is the Taiwanese baseball clip mentioned in the ESPN footer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT7Qi-QDaTk- zmigliozzi, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1That was weak, but that tends to be how baseball fights are.

- ChooChoo3000, on 04/22/2008, -4/+2Barry Hall needs to get his ***** punched in the balls.
- 533n, on 04/22/2008, -1/+10I love how he punches him then throws up his hands like what?
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0Staker had it coming. I'm suprised Hall waited as long as he did.
- TipsyMcDoodle, on 04/22/2008, -3/+2"You call that a punch? This is a punch!" "Sir, that's just a bowl of fruit punch"
- eq2s, on 04/22/2008, -1/+23As an Australian, I find it hilarious the amount of time the American sports shows spent giving "commentary" on this incident.
Especially that last guy: "That's called going over the top down under" "That's called didny in Sydney" - I'm glad they had a count down clock for him.- Misinformant, on 04/22/2008, -1/+9ooh...another Saucy Aussie
- mentallyimprd, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1You have to agree that puns like that are just... well... awful... I come from New Zealand and every time some news article refers to Lord of the Rings or sheep-shagging it really makes you cringe. Not that referring to something is a pun. Hmm. I guess I'll just go back to knitting.
- Misinformant, on 04/22/2008, -1/+9ooh...another Saucy Aussie
- ikcilabd, on 04/22/2008, -3/+4Aussie Aussie Aussie!

- rpgguy1o1, on 04/22/2008, -1/+9wow aussie football players sure are rough....
*continues watching NHL playoffs* - zmigliozzi, on 04/22/2008, -11/+6Ah yes a real mans sport. Not that American football "I have to wear pads because I have no balls."
This happens all the time in rugby if you were to ever watch it.- petemcfraser, on 04/22/2008, -2/+7I've played Rugby for 4 years, watched all of the RWC matches that were broadcast in the U.S. and have never seen someone throw a punch like that.
As a hockey enthusiast, however, I find nothing wrong with a good sock to the jaw.- ptemple, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RID8_ZFd3o8
Phillip.
- ptemple, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RID8_ZFd3o8
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/22/2008, -3/+4There have been a number of rugby players who've converted to playing American Football. Football players need pads for a reason! The first time you get a 300 lbs defensive end coming at you (and he's also *faster* than you are), you're happy for the pads. Just look at what LT did to end Joe Theisman's career and tell me American football players have no balls.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH8SZOqc6Pk- TheBEAST205, on 04/22/2008, -3/+3I agree, next to the fact that shoulder pads and knee pads give almost no protection, and when you have guys that weigh 280 and run a 4.3 forty hitting you, you'd be severely injured if you didn't wear pads. Saying that American Football is cowardly for wearing pads is one of the most ignorant things that someone can say and you obviously haven't played it before.
- petemcfraser, on 04/22/2008, -2/+7I've played Rugby for 4 years, watched all of the RWC matches that were broadcast in the U.S. and have never seen someone throw a punch like that.
- OffPiste, on 04/22/2008, -9/+2We can't get a Democrat in the Whitehouse quick enough to end this disgusting mess of a society.
- kmusser, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4what?
- TheDudeDiggs, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I hope thats sarcasm, because i really don't see how having a democrat in the white house can have any affect on espn or on any sport played in Austrailia.
- NorrisTwithman, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1He must copy+paste this comment in every story. It actually fits for quite a few.
- OffPiste, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4I have a macro.
- IHaveIssues, on 04/22/2008, -1/+10He sucker punched him. What a pussy.
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Ah, Hall's an ex-boxer. I dare you to call him a pussy to his face.
- marcduke, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Doesn't change the fact that's what he is.
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2Ah, Hall's an ex-boxer. I dare you to call him a pussy to his face.
- jknevitt, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2I went to school with Staker's older brother -- I'm surprised he hasn't taken a punch like that more often knowing the Staker boys.
- campigenus, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2He has taken more of them, just not on camera.
- jun2san, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3Seriously, that guy pushing Barry :35 seconds into the clip barely moved him. Hate to say it but it looks like Barry could have beaten the snot out of him. Also, why didn't the entire team just jump him?
- alchemist27, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Because Barry Hall is one big *****.
And wasn't he offered a few million to become a boxer a year or 2 back??
- alchemist27, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Because Barry Hall is one big *****.
- TheDudeDiggs, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4I loved NHL analyst Barry Melrose's comments! I'm confused why everyone is so up and arms about this? Isn't ausie rules a chippy sport, isn't there a bit of fighting in it? I don't have a dish and its never on regular cable so i can't say iv'e watched much of it. But it's my understanding of the sport that it is quite violent. I do think that punch is unsportsmanlike though, he was not ready for it, he sucker punched him. But like in hockey do players in Ausie rules ever go at it? Not sucker punching i mean, but a mutual fight.
- JoeRW, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Why yes, "http://youtube.com/results?search_query=afl+fight"
- topgun553, on 04/22/2008, -4/+3Wonders if Australian football is the same thing as rugby
- CJMac, on 04/22/2008, -2/+2Its not.
- eq2s, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3No, it isn't. See Wikipedia.
- campigenus, on 04/22/2008, -4/+3Yeah, it's like rugby ... except without the training wheels.
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -3/+1Umm, no. Nowhere near.
- 51684, on 04/22/2008, -3/+3It's worse.
- hoSSo, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3That second guy in blue sure showed him...
- sillyoldbear, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Heh, didn't he just. "Hey! You can't d..."
- primehifi, on 04/22/2008, -5/+7I just love how the first douche bag (baseball guy), complains about the punch and the violence in that then whines that no one else jumped into beat hall down.. the hypocrisy is awesome..... Americas should stick to what they know and fark off moaning about sports they have no clue about. Next they'll be commenting on the latest Gaelic league results or the Ashes. Bunch of wankers.
- TheDudeDiggs, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3I'm an American and i completely agree! Who the hell do those sports analysts think they are? Just because they are experts on American sports does not make them experts on all sports! Now i didn't see the whole episode of any of those shows, but i hope they all said something along the lines of "i know nothing about Ausie rules football but,......." They need to at least admit they know nothing about the sport before they give their opinions on it.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1That douche you talk about (John Kruk) never once complained about the punch. If you were actually listening, instead of finding a reason to unleash your obvious pent up hatred for "Americas", you'd realize he was mad that the guy's teammates didn't defend him, that's all.
- jun2san, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9Looks like he broke his wrist in that same game. That's Karma for you (Not a RickRoll)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N_CcO1mDac- cazlar, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but he ended up being suspended for just one week longer than he is expected to take to recover from the wrist, so it pretty much evens out.
- bunnybash, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4lol...
The puncher, barry hall, is actually a boxer, who apparently could have quite the boxing career if he wanted to! So to the dick commentator that said that Staker, the guy who got punched, has a glass jaw... um yeah... an ungloved punch from barry hall will drop 99% of people!! - EagleRufio, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Did no one catch the one comment someone made near the end? "Guy takes a punch like McLovin."
Greatest line ever. - asdfrewq, on 04/22/2008, -0/+15Why was everyone in that video yelling? Is that really how Americans report sports?
- theragu40, on 04/22/2008, -0/+10Nope, it's just ESPN. They used to actually cover sports, but now everything turns into an argument because apparently that brings in more viewers. They take sides in shouting matches over issues that don't have sides to take. It's ridiculous. I used to like watching, but I can't even stand it anymore.
- NorrisTwithman, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2You get used to it. It doesn't even seem like yelling to me anymore.
- w3v3, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2They over used Aussie rules without the rules.
- Gizza, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1Especially since Andrew Demitriou has taken over. Now the game has more rules than you can poke a stick at. Bloody ruining the game he is.
- sagat, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3They need to bring back the International rules series Ireland vs Australia, those games were wonderfully violent.
- purkel, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1dang I wish they had Footy over here in the US... it looks so much fun.
- jgoodstein, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1UH they do...... USfooty.com or more importantly the best team in the states: www.fightingsquids.com
you can pick up Footy on Setanta Sports network on Dish and Directv as well.

- Markers, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Watching that clip reminded me of all the reasons why I love Hockey - throw a punch or start a fight, five for fighting. It's just that damn simple.
- NeoCortex, on 04/22/2008, -1/+8"He takes a punch like McLovin"
Ah, I love ESPN. They have the greatest commentators of any station. - mlvassallo, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Who the ***** cares what JOHN KRUK thinks about Aussie Rules Football?!?!?

Best quotes ever/ - brownsound00, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1what *****. how is that one jackass making taiwan baseball into some 'violent animals" playing? They are talking from a country that has WWE wrestling and UFC. are you kidding me? "oh, i wanted to see a nice clean game of baseball" gimme a break, its not like that kind of stuff happens in the MLB either.
- zaith, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1brutal

- vanguardanon, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6dugg for Barry Melrose's mock outrage at how rough baseball can be. I literally laughed out loud.
- Pake, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2His comments had me rolling. Melrose is the man.

Harry Ball Punch - steveoco, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2To be honest I think that is the best punch to be thrown in AFL... but totally uncalled for... Hall is a piece of ***** for even making an excuse about the thing, that guy was doing nothing wrong and it was just as weak as a being cheap shotted at the pub. Weak display by a weak minded piece of *****.
- bluenash, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Tuff Mo-Fo.
- PinkTacoDigger, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0If you get punched in the chin by an amateur boxer when you're not expecting it, you'll go down. Fighting is not legal in Aussie Rules right?
- beej2099, on 04/23/2008, -4/+1Man AFL really is the worst football code in the world, good thing i live in NSW lol we have NRL (GO MANLY!!)
- scytherz, on 04/23/2008, -1/+2Lol. NRL sucks balls mate. At least in AFL the skill level and fitness improves each year.
What do you get in NRL? Buff men slamming each other, pretending to not be gay - mentallyimprd, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1i like union myself (waves very small NZ flag)
