- then00b, on 10/02/2008, -4/+37This is clearly a ploy to steal their oil.
- BoneStamp, on 10/02/2008, -3/+34How many suicide bombers can you ollie?
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+32I also hear they're getting a Ferris Wheel. If they get an In n Out, I'm moving there.
- Gnarstache, on 10/02/2008, -1/+22gonna go there and bust out a kickflip backside tailslide to IED flip out
- Jordan117, on 10/02/2008, -2/+17Perhaps they misunderstand the meaning of the phrase "radical Islam".
- marinebro0306, on 10/02/2008, -3/+15That's the best they could come up with ? A skate park?
Should have built a strip club... - ericmerrill, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12So we're turning Iraq into a tourist trap? This isn't Vietnam Part II, this is Hawaii Part II.
- PReitz, on 10/02/2008, -2/+13Skate park? Why not go-karts?
- dafragsta, on 10/02/2008, -3/+14So will it be called the Muhammad Air or the Christ Air? I guess Muhammad was never actually crucified.
- Pedestrian101, on 10/02/2008, -2/+12This is why we stayed it Iraq....
- jjmac, on 10/02/2008, -1/+8I think projects like these are good steps to stabilization. If we treat it like a war zone it will stay a war zone. If we treat it like a country with people who enjoy things like skating, well you get the idea.
- Wosat, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7FTA: "Iraq is a war zone," Werner acknowledges. "But it's transitioning into an economy supported by the world's second-largest proven reserve of oil." And unlike Afghanistan, "which is another basket case," Iraq has the resources to rebuild its infrastructure after decades of dictatorial rule, sanctions and post-invasion ravages.
This is why Iraq is the central front in the war on terror -- it has the resources to succeed. - dafragsta, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Dammit! You beat me to it.
- trafficlight, on 10/02/2008, -4/+9Who knew world peace was a simple as building a skate park or two. Pompous prick.
- Wosat, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Did you read the article?
"...he uses his BlackBerry to keep track of his many projects in Iraq. These include everything from the installation of fiber-optics networks to constructing several large power plants to setting up international distribution for Iraq-grown dates."
Yeah, sounds like a real *****. /s - Gimjee, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4It's just a skatepark, but still cool. Mike V's probably gonna head over there now.

- opiniastrous, on 10/02/2008, -2/+6It's his money. He can do whatever the hell he wants with it. Besides, if the investments work than that means the money will come BACK to the US.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Glad to know they got all their other problems solved.

How else am I going to make a snide remark? - ancientdinko, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3what an awesome idea!! give the kids some pot too!!!!!
- magamiako, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3I know that this guy is doing this for capitalist reasons, and the article even admits that in the 5 pages. In his own words he even states that he's doing it for the potential money. And this man has a lot of money to invest in Iraq and has some huge contracts in Baghdad.
Despite this, I think it's a great idea. Sure, there are millions of other hobbies for kids to get involved in, tons of education they need, healthcare, etc. But a vast part of being a kid is just that--being a kid. They need to go outside and enjoy themselves every now and again.
If this is something that can help bring the Iraqi children together, ultimately it will help bring the people together. This isn't an overnight scenario, and not going to automatically bring thousands of kids together instantly--but if it brings just a couple kids from different neighborhoods to be friends, that could start business relationships later on down the road. - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4It's Iraq, they didn't have radical Islam 6 years ago.
- jjmac, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3I agree that we should withdrawal our military presence (and should have a long time ago).
But in the US individuals have long invested in international venues when they see a potential. I guess I'm just a bit excited to see investors seeing Iraq as a potential rather than a waste, even if it is in an economic sense. - inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3Gnarly.

- sfacets, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2USA: Iraq, want to buy more of our stuff?
Iraq: We already have a frikkin' skate park. - jjmac, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2This is why we should have withdrawn our troops a long time ago. :(
- Maxmaxxwell, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3Why is that? Do you hate skateparks? Or suicide bombers?
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3That's not treating it like a country. That's taking advantage of chaos and weakness for profit.
Treating them like a country would be to leave. - Ghostalker, on 10/02/2008, -2/+4Great to see my tax dollars so hard at work over there.
- WDAndrew, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3Haha, that's awesome, maybe I can do a 360 flip over your blown off leg? :D
- opiniastrous, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3Rome wasn't built in a day trafficlight, just as it will take many projects, often small ones, to rebuild Baghdad.
- opiniastrous, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3MEMO TO DIGG
Why You Should Stop Criticising the Skate Park:
No-one is suggesting that a single skate park will turn Baghdad or wider Iraq into a model of peace and prosperity. That said, Rome wasn't built in a day. Military stability operations focus on securing the environment from threats (of which you've seen a lot of in the past four years) so that civilian and government projects can work on social and economic development. Again, this is not a rapid process, but every now and then, a skate park will help prevent the kids in one neighbourhood from joining an insurgent group, and that's a few less kids that the US and Iraqi Armies will have to hunt down and kill in order to secure the city from further violence. Step by step, brick by brick, kickflip by kickflip, the war will be won. When I say 'won' by the way, I don't mean it in the sense that the US will emerge victorious over Iraq, but that Iraq will be able to return to normality and the chance for a better future under a stable democratic system. You might not like the process (or the original reason for war - myself included), but that's the reality, and the goal is worthwhile. - razlken, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1You don't know what the ***** you are talking about.
Arab & Muslims Don't hate your culture. I Live in Egypt and I am an arab and a Muslim myself and honestly i hate no ones culture. Since I'm no Iraqi I can't say what they think, probably i'd hate any external country coming to my own too.
But i can tell you something, I've got a lot of calssmates from other middle eastern countries and none hate any culture, yeah they may hate your politicians, but hell i hate all politicians myself, but no one hates the culture itself. There are even European & American Students and we all live happily together.
And since you don't understand any *****' thing about this since you never lived here & neither understand how life goes on here, 90% of the people i know (all Arabs & Muslims) want to get the hell out of here to live in Europe or America, so don't give me this crap. And don't come tell me i don't understand how life goes on in Europe since i travelled alot and lived there too i know and can compare life in both places...you are the moron so just shut up.... - Mutton, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I miss Q. :(
- coopaloop, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I thought they already had an In N Out. You know... In... blow the ***** out of their country... N out
- Tiak, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1FTA:
"The idea was to airlift four pre-fabricated "pocket parks" into the Coalition-controlled Green Zone. U.S. troops would then load each set of rails and ramps onto transport vehicles so that the parks could be "quickly deployed" into "strategic locations" throughout Baghdad,"
Dugg for making skate parks sound like a dangerous military tool. - sfacets, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1No he can't do whatever he wants. It isn't his country - how did he even get a permit to build this?
