- hatchetj, on 12/30/2008, -2/+52I'm just stoked to see cricket on the front page. Yay for cricket!
- heronimous, on 12/30/2008, -5/+45buried for the sheer pain it causes me..
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -4/+38I love how Cricket stories turn up every now and then on Digg front page. Sort of a regular, determined 'up yours!' by the Anglos to the Yanks. Very funny.
- terrapurus, on 12/30/2008, -3/+29I'm an Aussie and I dugg this ... we always enjoy good sport and South Africa played well to deserve the series win.
- monkenstick, on 12/30/2008, -5/+31at least it wasn't the poms
- phreak79, on 12/30/2008, -3/+25It's been an amazing couple of performances by South Africa. It's one thing to lose a series in India, no disgrace there, but to lose their first home series in 16 years is a real signal of the decline in Australian cricket.
- ross., on 12/30/2008, -5/+26"Nobody understands cricket. You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket."
(My favourite childhood movie) - WalterPike, on 12/30/2008, -3/+22Well done South Africa
- Gizza, on 12/30/2008, -1/+20I'm going to guess as an American that you watch baseball yes? How can you honestly think that sport is more exciting than cricket? The only people who don't find cricket exciting are people who know nothing about it.
- bearon, on 12/30/2008, -1/+17Don't forget the Indians :)
- 22catches, on 12/30/2008, -1/+17Great win by South Africa, they look like they have a very well balanced and confident side at the moment. Australia had their chances, so hopefully they can come back and make a real contest of it in Sydney.
- samartha, on 12/30/2008, -2/+13Hoping SA can make it 3-0 ...
- kckinn, on 12/30/2008, -0/+10I dont think there should be any shock for the fact that they never got any respect.
Simply put, there is/was too much arrogance in the aussie team. - a6h1nav, on 12/30/2008, -2/+12Excellent result for South Africa - especially considering the 180 run 9th wicket partnership in their 1st innings. Well done.
Wonder if Australia are actually getting worse or if everyone else is just finally catching up?
Although I don't dislike the Aussies, its great to see matches become much less one-sided. - divinediva, on 12/30/2008, -3/+12Emphatic victory.
- sdellboy, on 12/30/2008, -2/+11Consider the state SA were in at the tail-end of their first innings, this was a remarkable win. Aussie cricket is in a lot of trouble...and then they go and select Hayden again for Sydney...sheer stupidity. The mark of a great sportsman is knowing when to retire...
- evilelf2407, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9"South Africa have sealed a historic Test series victory in Australia, winning the second Test after reaching 183 for the loss of just one wicket"
what
-ignorant american - rocketz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9yeah but you used up all your up your credits with Bush...
- crimsonc, on 12/30/2008, -1/+9If you think Cricket takes 5 days and is therefore boring, go and watch a Twenty20 match. If you like the pure awesomeness of Test Match Cricket may I suggest Bob Woolmers (RIP) book Art and Science of Cricket.
Oh and being English I would be lacking in my duty if I didn't say "Ashes 2009 baby. Bring.it.on" - mickstephenson, on 12/30/2008, -0/+8Dugg for the sheer pain it causes him..
- psYcon, on 12/30/2008, -3/+11oh please for the love of God, there's no need to bash cricket as a sport. For all you baseball lovers/cricket haters I have only one thing to say to you...get real ...Baseball is such a phony sport - it's a cheap imitation of cricket. But as they say, imitation is the best form of flattery.
- CouchTomato, on 12/30/2008, -0/+8Congrats South Africa!
Anyway, thanks to cricket, without it there'd be no baseball. Although, I am also beginning to suspect that baseball is a socialist's version of cricket. I mean what the hell, the batter who plays really well has to get out so others can play? I like cricket for promoting individualism in the middle of an attack from the collective. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7As a South African and big fan of cricket I'm obviously ecstatic about the series win (and hoping we can turn it into a 3-0 whitewash), but I think Cricket Australia, and the public at large, need to be careful not to overreact and think that the sky is falling.
The South African team has had a dream season even before going to Australia, being unbeaten in ten Test Series on the trot and many of our players are in top form. Guys like Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith are probably in the form of their lives. Australia, on the other hand, have many players who are terribly out of form (I'm looking at you, Matthew Hayden). Then the Aussies recently lost a few all-time great players to retirement, and some of their remaining big guns are dealing with pretty serious injuries.
There are, in my opinion, some problems with cricket in Australia. Mainly that it seems impossible for talented young guys to make it into the national side which is composed mostly of old farts hanging around collecting a paycheque, and a selection commitee bending over backwards to placate them.
Don't get me wrong, though. Judging by how well South Africa are playing at the moment I still think they would have whupped Australia even if the Aussies were fielding an uninjured team and guys like Gilchrist and McGrath were still around. Nonetheless, I'm sure that our antipodean brothers will bounce back and put up a heck of a fight when they get to Johannesburg in February.
Let's just hope that, for Australia's sake, the series defeat is a slap to the face of the selectors and management painful enough to wake them up to the shortcomings that do exist in their system.
In other news, this is probably my longest comment ever. I'm such a cricket nerd. - LukeBeaumont, on 12/30/2008, -4/+11Good on you SA. We will be back though; we are just rebuilding.
- vats, on 12/30/2008, -2/+9Cool, Downfall of the dominance of Australia in Cricket has started earlier this year and now South Africa proved that.
- viksmaester, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7Dugg for proteas' first innings batting!!
- cazlar, on 12/30/2008, -1/+8Dugg, even though I'm Australian. We've had a good long time at the top, but it looks as though we are on the way down now. But at least that means someone else gets a chance at #1. It may take a while to rebuild, but should be interesting to watch them try to recover and rebuild a new younger team.
- inurv, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6I beg to differ. Seen India play against England recently?
- bearon, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6I'm an Indian candle, but hey, the decisions didn't go our way, it happens. We showed them who were the quality team in the end didn't we.
- rocketz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6Australia deserved to lose... Too many fat cats in the selction commitee. They have destroyed Alan Borders legacy. Symonds should be banned to league and YET they play him injured! Go figure...
- colsim, on 12/31/2008, -0/+6As an Aussie, I appreciated the skill shown by the South Africans and respect their wins. Australia were just completely outplayed by a better team.
Good for cricket (sob :) - hansolo, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6Agreed about Hayden. Arrogant to the end. At least Gilchrist, Langer, Warne, and McGrath knew when to retire.
- Tedricks, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7Even as a South African, I felt for Ponting being dismissed on 99. Great showing by SA, they deserved this. Still wouldn't move back there though (Australia is just too nice =D).
- deeboe, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Your Mom, rubbing her legs together.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5ha ha ha ha ha
- OomBok, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5As a fellow South African and cricket nerd, I rather enjoyed your comment :)
- ortucis, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Why? Cause Australia cheated? Well damn. I remember Hayden saying how he can't play his best in a third world country like India, now what?
Stop making excuses and all the bitching on and off field. - DaveVII, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5snooker has meal breaks.
- dsmx, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6Rebuild from what Australia lack any real strike power in the bowling and your batting team is aging and most will retire in the next few years.
- rocketz, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6Ass kicking, by a team selected on colour not merit
- jjpertusch, on 12/30/2008, -4/+8i blame baz luhrmann
- rocketz, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Symonds? The only person on merit in the team is Ponting. at least he put up a fight. The rest wilted like Sheilas
- dsmx, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5Australia are getting worse, no real bite in their bowling attack.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4You come from a pom, moron ;-)
- kckinn, on 12/30/2008, -5/+9Oh Yea.
I am so happy.
But you have to give it to Australia as well, they have remained world champs for nearly 15 years now.
But the sad part was they never got the respect of any side as the old west indies team had. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4I like to think that there are many Americans who enjoy the game of Cricket. Just like there are many of us in South Africa, England, India, etc. who enjoy typically American sports like professional wrestling and and NASCAR.
- phreak79, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4They have the Ashes in the summer as well. No doubt we'll play them back into form :)
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Exactly! That's why we call anyone with an English accent a POM!
Not all Australians were criminals, just those that moved to the US.
- dsmx, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4crumpet is what blokes use to refer to attractive women in Britain, there you go you now understand cricket.
- MrChunks, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Not since 1959 have attractive women been referred to as "crumpet" in Britain. Unless you go to public school, of course.
