- drmobutu, on 02/07/2009, -0/+50Only in Sumo wrestling, is marijuana a performance enhancing drug...
- mrsteveman1, on 02/07/2009, -1/+31Every time someone gets caught with weed we hear about it.
How many of these athletes go out and get drunk? We don't hear about that as if it were a ***** moral failure.
For that matter, how many of the idiots in the media making a huge deal about this Phelps thing go out and have a cigarette at break time, have a liquid lunch, and eat a few valium to sleep at night? Seriously, ***** all of them. - jasmus, on 02/07/2009, -1/+22Leave them alone, what they do in their own time, not affecting anyone, should be leagal anyways etc.
starting to think digg needs a pot section. - anonymousmedic, on 02/07/2009, -0/+15This is a cultural difference. In Japan, it is culturally abhorrant for those in positions of authority to use any kind of illicit substance, even pot. Sumos are their equivalent of football stars.
It's not for the same "William Randolf Hurst Reefer Madness" reasons that the US has. - JDoorjam, on 02/07/2009, -0/+12I donno guys, I think the drug war is stupid, but when you're trying to weigh hundreds and hundreds of pounds, pot _is_ a performance-enhancing drug.
- mehan, on 02/07/2009, -2/+14When is this pot issue going to reach critical mass?
When is this ***** witch hunt going to stop, and people are going to come out and openly admit to enjoying the recreational use of a harmless ***** plant. - FaithclubDotNet, on 02/07/2009, -2/+11Don't forget Santonio Holmes, the MVP of the Superbowl was caught with pot and suspended a game this year.
What is so bad with pot again? - StickWST, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8idk like toyota or something
- ArgotMay, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8
The Japanese people need pot badly. - AReallyGoodName, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8If you're a succesful person with a job who smokes pot you will be fired for it. So you rarely see a succesful person, such as an athelete, admitting to smoking weed.
This ensures that pot continues to have a reputation of only being used by losers, despite the fact that it's no worse than, say, alcohol or tobacco. - DrReaper, on 02/07/2009, -1/+8Hemp is a completely renewable crop that was grown during the boom times in America. It is a missed crop that cannot be replaced. Its seeds are 30% oil and are the perfect food. Its time America wised up and followed the founding fathers example and start growing some hemp.
"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country." -Thomas Jefferson - choopie911, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Good for you DrReaper. Most of digg is pro-marijuana anyways.
- Hetman, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7You can have hemp that has almost a 0% THC content. So that should not even be an issue.
- Yurikov, on 02/06/2009, -2/+8with me being a chronik user I can definitely say the same thing that first came through my mind when I saw the Phelps ordeal:
"Man he must've had the munchies so they can eat that much"
Sure enough huh? - Skrimshaw, on 02/07/2009, -1/+7The governments of the world, in regards to pot, are ABSO-FRACKING INSANE.
- slyzxx, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Man i can`t imagine Sumo wrestlers smoking weed, they must the most serious munchies ever.
- Ghoztt, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5But being an alcoholic is A-OK in Nippon!
- sealbeater, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5This is just ridiculous, I mean, come on! It's just weed.

- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4doesnt japan have a zero tolerance for marijuana..same for firearms

- daveintokyo, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4ヒッピー
hippi - ams876, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4FTA - Marijuana use, in particular, is rising rapidly despite a stiff punishment — up to five years in prison for possession.
LOL and I thought we had it bad in the US. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4A lot of athletes really don't drink.. Alcohol is horrible for muscle fitness.... I bet most athletes smoke pot over alcohol...
- jparkinson, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4can we hotbox it?
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4Actually, I seriously believe digg needs a pot section.
- CaptObvious, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3You first.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3The onion is slacking lately, reality has caught up
- Derka010, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Dammit I was gonna say that...
- jasmus, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3While I don't know a lot about Japanese culture, I'm sure this is a COMPLETELY different issue over there.
- dok333, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3I think restaurants need a pot section
- ripple123, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3furry
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3I came here to write "insert munchies joke here" to solicit a titter or a guffaw from the idle passer-by and lighten their day. You have usurped me sir, and I do not cotton to that. I do not cotton to that at all.
- strong2345, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4Damnit.. thought it was an onion article...
- RUFuKinCrazy, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3not yet.
- Hetman, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3If America would legalize marijuana most of the world would soon follow. Just for the simple fact that we could grow such vast amounts in such high quality it would be a very valuable crop.
- krahzee, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3You would just forget it was there anyway......
- AmazingSteve, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2And the world continues to be shocked that people smoke pot. Yawn.
- Syric, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2The thing about sumo wrestling that differentiates it from almost every other sport is the religious, ritualistic aspect to it. The wrestlers aren't just athletes; they're holy men. It does seem hypocritical to allow them to drink copious amounts of beer but not marijuana, but for instance they're also not allowed to drive cars, wear certain types of clothes, smile at certain times, etc. They have a number of strict lifestyle rules that seem unusual to us, but that's part of what being a sumo wrestler is. They know what they're getting themselves into, and people expect them to adhere to everything. More out of tradition than logic.
- teknomaker18, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Ohhh I get it and completely understand. Pot is a drug like steroids huh? It isn't? What's the big deal than?
- pyrobaby, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2it is. Not only because it's sumo, and because now it's a JAPANESE guy and not just foreigners, but because they think pot is equivalent to crack/heroin/etc. They have no clue about medical uses or anything like that, and I've even heard Japanese colleagues quote "research" about how pot causes appetite LOSS, which is pretty much the most LOL thing I've ever heard.
Seriously, regular Japanese citizens probably know less about pot than the rape of Nanking, and that's saying a lot. (and I say this as someone who lives in and loves Japan) - mrsteveman1, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Well I SAY they like mushrooms because they make the finish line seem closer (and multi-colored). We will just assume i'm right until someone else comes along with better information.
- pyrobaby, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2You have to understand, Japan has NO CLUE about pot. Most people have no clue about the medical use arguments, and think it's seriously as bad as heroin. I had to watch a Japanese anti-drug video once when a guy in my company got busted, and it told me such gems as pot DECREASES appetite and makes the user "starve themselves to death," and the classic anti-drug video "OH GOD BUGS ALL OVER ME IT'S IN MY SKIN AAAH" jump out the window scene. You can buy tons of stuff here with pot leaf pictures on it, but most folks have no clue about the actual drug - to the point that the few people that use it can grow it on the verandas of their apt buildings without getting busted! But if you do get busted, your life is basically over. It's insanity.
I will be very interested in how the Japanese sumo guy is treated for this, as I'm sure the Russians getting busted mostly got a "yup that's foreigners for ya" response. - coopaloop, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2it could be under "lifestyle"
- sat0shi, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2@calypsoschnitzl:
2girls1cup is not Japanese, but point taken. Japan has some of its priorities ***** up.
@mikepunk:
Yes, a TRACE of marijuana will put you behind bars for a while. Not gonna say how long because it really does vary on the judge, etc. but I've seen cases of people with something like 0.01 grams of weed getting put in jail for over 2 years. Also, if you're a foreigner you can pretty much count on getting deported and unable to re-enter the country for ... I believe it's 10 years ... unless you have a really good reason to be here. The sentence for growing marijuana (even one tiny plant) is 7 years I believe.
Japan has been in super anti-marijuana mode recently as it has gained popularity in recent years. We've had busts of university students growing weed (which is funny, considering some older Japanese people I've talked to would tell me about how during the student activist movements in the 70s I believe it was college students would riot and turn over police cars if they even so much as showed up on campus since apparently Japanese police are not allowed to go on campus ... not sure if that's changed or if the busts were off campus), busts in sumo as you see here, and they did a huge 45 minute special on the dangers of weed the other day on the news. Japan is definitely cracking down on it, HARD. - jordantneff, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2First it's Phelps, now its Wakakirin?!?! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
- freshgrease, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Yet another "ME too" Japanese act. The other day they took our Numa Numa, and now they decide they think they can play with the big boys and our Olympic champion pot smoking swimmer.
