- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13I'm reminded of Couture's fight against Gonzaga last year. Everyone was saying how much younger and faster Gonzaga was, but in the end, Couture made a bloody mess of him (and I lost $50).
Here are the bodog lines:
Randy Couture +105
Brock Lesnar -145
For those of you not familiar with betting lines, Lesnar is favored to win. - pitdog, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10It would be interesting to see Fedor Emelianenko take care of that big fella Lesnar.
- edebolt, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9I am a longtime MMA fan. Initially I was against Lesnar and cheered when Mir submitted him but I think Brock is the real deal. Randy might win the fight but look for Lesnar to throw him around like a rag doll. I am so excited this fight is only 3 days away.
- alpha94, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10Nothing against Lesner, but I feel that anyone fighting for as a headliner for the PPV events should have at least worked his way there. I mean, this is what, his third UFC fight and fourth pro fight ever and he's going for the title?
What does this say to all the guys that have been working their way up for years and have tonnes of experience and put it all on the line? This guy came over from pro wrestling and was paid 250K to fight Mir and was offered a 250K winning bonus. - SupaFupa, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8Seeing him handle Heath like a rag doll told me Lesnar is legit. But Randy, after Fedor, is probably the smartest fighter in MMA right now. That doesn't assure him a win, and lesnar has proven it doesn't take much strategy and smarts, but the technical nature and calculation of Randy's game puts him in a position to make a fool out of Lesnar, at his own game. Randy in the second by GnP TKO.
- mikethesecond, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8This is going to be one helluva fight
- JetMike, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7I'm no Lesnar fan in any way shape or form. But calling him "fat" is an exaggeration to say the least.
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/13/2008, -2/+9I've been a pro wrestling fan since I was 5 (back in 1992), and only started really paying attention to MMA after Brock came into UFC. The guy is probably the most athletic guy his size in history, I'm pulling for him to finally win a championship that wasn't predetermined.
- NJank, on 11/13/2008, -4/+11Buried for no real chess info.
- wowsah156, on 11/13/2008, -2/+8Sorry to say this but Dana White is weakening the UFC brand by putting on gimmck matches like this. Lesnar as only fought twice in the UFC. So why is he getting special treatment when there are much better fighters out there who deserve more exposure than Lesnar? I can see a lot of long term UFC fans switching off to this pro boxing type promotions, that have a smell of "worked" or fixed fight to it. The UFC is going down hill.
- parliboy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I can't agree totally here. When Coture won the heavyweight championship, who in the heavyweight division had he actually beaten to earn the title shot? He hadn't fought in that weight class in five years, after all?
Now if you want to make the argument that this fight was made because a) Dana White wants to get the belt off of Couture and b) Couture doesn't match well against Lesnar and c) there's cross-over draw that will bring extra buys, well then I'm listening. - Zipko, on 11/13/2008, -3/+7I read the headline and thought they were bringing Chess-Boxing rules to a UFC match. That would be fun to watch on TV.
- Vindicoth, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I've been watching the UFC since before it was a weight class restricted league. It was tournament style and sometimes fighters would fight more than twice a night. Even though Lesnar has all the advantages besides experience on Couture, I will NEVER bet against Randy, not at his natural weight class of 225.
Randy Couture - 3rd Round - Arm Bar. - rsbryswrrl, on 11/13/2008, -1/+5Please please don't let this be another fight where Lesnar gets someone to the ground and lays on them the whole fight. I really like Couture - my husband just finished reading his book and said it was awesome. That said, I just don't know if he can out-muscle Lesnar. I just hope he doesn't end the fight with his face looking like his wife's after her last fight...
- roflmcwaffles, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4If Couture is gonna win, it's gonna be by submission. I hope Randy's been working on Jiu-Jitsu off his back.
- parliboy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I agree that Randy Couture is not washed up. But I fear he matches up badly against Lesnar. All but one of Couture's win's have come from either strikes or decision. That was against an admittedly strong wrestler, but not someone who was nearly in Lesnar's class. Now factor in the size differential, and it's ugly.
Do remember Lesnar's loss to Mir. Lesnar was stupid, and he got caught in a kneebar because he literally turned away from his opponent. That won't be happening again, and unless Couture can really defeat Lesnar in conditioning (Lesnar can clearly go 15; can he go 25?) or get the lucky strike it, then he might have a long night.
One more thing; please don't use that kind of disregard toward any sort of fans that are tuning in to see the fight. Their dollars are making Coture's payout possible here, and you know it. - slvrbullet87, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4What that means is if you bet 145 and lesner wins you will get 245 back. If you bet 100 on courture and he wins you will get back 205
- Grazfather, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Betting line: Based on betting or winning $100.
You need to bet $145 to win $100 on lesnar, or you can bet $100 on couture and win $105. - AtomicTheory, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Are you saying that in the last year, since winning the last two of his fights (one of which being Tim Silvia), Couture has become "washed up"? That's ridiculous.
- JoeLauzonDotCom, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I think Randy takes this one. Too experienced, too smart.
- JetMike, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3All good points Paliboy. Even the one about the WWE fans. I just hate that they gave him a title shot JUST because of how many mullets will be in the crowd.
I know it's "good for business" and all, but it's bad form. I agree with the other poster that stated they need a "real" ladder.
I love MMA and I really hope that Dana And Friends(tm) get some actual competition to help improve the quality of their product soon. I was thinking that Affliction would be just that (they even stole Big John!)...but they're struggling too. - edebolt, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4I base that on what he did to Mir also. He manhandled both Mir and Herring. It's very possible Randy wins but Brock is only 31 and has a good 10 years to learn and grow. Remember when GSP lost to Hughes? A real deal can lose a fight or two on the way up...
- LaGStAr, on 11/13/2008, -4/+7Brock Lesner may be big and Couture athletic, but CAN THEY RUN CRYSIS?
- JetMike, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Once again I agree parliboy. This all smells of "getting rid" of Couture (in the nicest way possible) and making money in the process to me.
- erasedgod, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Buried for being a douche.
Brock Lesnar is an NCAA champ. It takes more skill to get there than it does to talk ***** on Digg. - ScottoGato, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2take care of = dismantle
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2That will be next weeks gimmick.

I wonder what contains more "Additives"
Brock Lesnar or all the concession stand food served during this fight. - krets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Athleticism does not always convert to success in the NFL. If that were the case, the guys who score the highest in the combine would always become the next big stars in the league.
- krets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Mir hardly made a fool of him. Lesnar was smashing Mir until Mir caught him with an ankle lock. That "fool" was well on his way to beating Mir into a bloody pulp before he made a inexperienced mistake.
- acknotSW, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I'll be interested in watching lesnar in a couple years to see how he improves, but I think I'll always be irritated by the fact that his celebrity and 2 years of training bought him something that others have spent countless hours of work achieving.
- justice7, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I think Brock Lesnar proves that brute force wins are still possible; especially if you're as big as Brock.
Technique helps a lot, but Brock is like a human form of the Hulk. - parliboy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Not off-topic. But I don't completely agree.
The graduating classes of The Ultimate Fighter have gotten weaker since the first season, as they go deeper and deeper into the talent pool. That said, it can produce some arguable exciting fights. (If you disagree, you never watched Griffin - Bonnar I; go do so immediately at your friendly illegal video collection site.)
As to the issue about choosing title contenders based on marketability... well duh. Any combat sport is going to suffer from this. To me, the weakest part of the UFC is the fact that the uniform rules system it follows allows people to legally be boring. Wanna be a wrestler and ride your opponent for 15 minutes so you win? Great. But don't expect a title match, because noone will pay to watch you fight.
Lots of gripe is made about how little of UFC's profits go toward fighter salary. Unfortunately, they can make repeatedly correct arguments about all the promotions that pay fighters what they're allegedly worth and then go under. Granted, many of them went under because they promoted crap for main events (see Slice, Kimbo). But technically, they're correct.
Now in the case of most fighers, they make more from endorsements than they do from fights themselves. Of course, this leads to the hilariously unfortunate visual of a half-naked guy with an advertisement for a condom distributor on his ass. But such is life. - SACubeMonkey, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I honestly clicked on that link because I thought it was going to be about a chess match. :(
- tawnee, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I thought I was going to see more of this:
http://meignorant.com/files/images/angry_kid_playi ... - Liam2012, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2You would not find it so gay if your throat was getting crushed in a rear naked or your elbow popped in an arm bar.
- Liam2012, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Or perhaps the UFC realizes that this fight is a win-win situation.
If Brock wins, then he's instantly marketable as the phenom who was able to take the belt from one of the sport's best after just three MMA fights.
If Couture wins, then he can be marketed as the giant slayer who took down Silva, Gonzaga, and Lesnar, which only increases the desire for a Randy -- Fedor fight. And if Randy keeps beating heavy competition, then Fedor will have to acquiesce and take a fight or else risk his status as the world's best heavyweight.
Why everyone is so quick to smell conspiracy, set-up, and dirty dealing is beyond me. This will be a good fight and it will sell tickets, period. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2hard666drive
It means that you have to RISK $145 to win $100. Which means you'll get paid $245. This means that Lesnar is favored since you have to RISK more money.
If you bet Couture you RISK $100 to win $105. (You get paid $205. So he's not favored.
They put it in terms of risk. They want 50% of the population to bet on Lesnar and the other 50% to bet on Couture. That's how they make their money cuz they take a cut of each bet.
Due to the 50/50 split they need to give incentive to vote for either fighter. - covertbadger, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2"I mean, this is what, his third UFC fight and fourth pro fight ever and he's going for the title?"
You realise Randy Couture himself won his first heavyweight title in his 4th pro fight ever, right? - krets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Don't know why you got dugg down, you speak the truth.
- trollick, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Randy, second round, Lasker-Bauer combination
- carnold, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1I agree that Lesnar dominated the fight against Mir until making a mistake and turning away from him. While Lesnar may not make that particular mistake again, it is likely that he will make others given how inexperienced in MMA he is. Randy Couture is arguably the king of discovering, then exploiting mistakes and weaknesses. That being said though, once Lesnar gets more experience, I think he's going to be a dangerous fighter.
- krets, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Lesnar is fat? That's the stupidest thing I've read all day.
Aside from the idiocy of that comment, what does fat have to do with your ability to fight? Have you ever seen Fedor's body? - IRAcarbombs, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1who invitied McCain on here?
- edebolt, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Lesnar with next to no skills KO Couture. One for the record books. Next stop Noguiera.
- JetMike, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Agreed. But I'll say 3rd round ref stoppage.
- slvrbullet87, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1The Ultimate fighter doesnt bring contenders into UFC? Ever hear of Forrest Griffon?
- slvrbullet87, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1While i hope the best for Lesner, you should know that Courture is one of the best athletes UFC has ever seen. He is old but dont think lesner is going to roll over him. Being in the octagon for that long has given Courture years and years of experience that Lesner has to try and overcome
- bicyclethief, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1@1smartguy
"A striker has a bigger burden learning how to defend themselves against the take down and ground skills of a high level wrestler so they can be proficient at MMA."
I'm not so sure. I really think it depends on how proficient you are at your one discipline. Look at CroCop. The guy didn't have any ground game whatsoever. And let's be honest, his takedown defense wasn't all that great even later on. But his striking was so good that he put people away or hurt them before they could force their game on him. -
