- FaithclubDotNet, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10How do people not get bored?
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8Oh God, Badwater is Badass.
- phixed, on 12/28/2007, -2/+10Sweet! I'm backing out of the marathon I was planning on doing next year with the excuse that "I'm holding out and thinking about Badwater instead."
- bloodmoney, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7I run about 60 miles a week, listening to audio books the whole time. It makes the runs entertaining. I have been able to go through about 2x as many books as I normally do by doing this.
- alexkorova, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6My father is just a bit insane and a bit of an athlete. He did manage a sub 3 hours marathon a few years ago (when he was 51-52-ish) though, and that is pretty impressive.
- Littleedgitt, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6Ya when they tell you in grade school that you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
Well not anything. - jggr, on 12/28/2007, -3/+8I feel comfortable that you'll never touch a boob in your life.
It's fun to make baseless accusations about people you don't know and will probably never meet.
/Good comment, but some stupid points by the author. :P - trancelicious, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5FTA: "2. Xu Zhenjun Ran a Marathon in 3:43……….Backwards!"
my neck starts to hurt just thinking about it. - drdepoy, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5yeah, im going to go ahead and call ***** on the bike comment subby, a comfortable biking pace is 15 mph, a daily commuter could do a marathon in a little over an hour on a bike.
- dagnabbit, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Put "Running on the Sun" in your netflix queue. It's about the Badwater ultramarathon, and it's insane.
ps - Dean Karnazes is an inhuman beast. - patricklove, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Buried for forgetting Terry Fox.
- TheWindWaker01, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4That marathon time is amazing. I run a 5:31 mile, but that's only for a single mile as compared to 26 MILES that he ran 4:48 each.
- Scaryclouds, on 12/28/2007, -2/+5My god a 4:48 mile is already badass... A 4:48 mile for 26.1 miles in wholly unbelievable. I'm sitting of goal of getting my 3 miles run down to 18:00. I will try to push that down to 15:00, which is think is possible in one year. But man I could never hope to achieve what that man did.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3distance running is one of the most pure sports there is. You can't accidentally run a 2:04 marathon and you can't get lucky and finish badwater.
- Larakin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Great stuff! although I think the Hardrock 100 is an exceptionally hard race and needs to be mentioned here.
I am currently in training for the hardrock (still 2 years away though) Ive got a 50k next month, a 50 mile 13,000ft climb race within the next year and hardrock by the time im 30!
This year only 2 finishers of the hardrock were under 30... I want to be one of those finishers! - slomotion, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Running for 80 hours straight? Weak sauce compared to Vicki Keith swimming for 129 hours and 49 minutes straight.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicki_Keith - Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3agreed, I used to run the 2-mile for track in highschool, my best first mile was a 6:05, my best mile in practice was 5:50, I obviously could have ran faster considering that both times I ran an additional mile with a time 5-10 seconds slower, but I never found it in me.
I must say finishing any kind of distance run is one of hte best feelings in the world. These guys blow my mind, especially the ones who crossed the desert, i mean jesus. - emalen, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3hello people?!?! sarcasm much?
- iPirate, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2What about Stu Mittleman? 1000 miles in less than 12 days.
- Uranium118, on 12/28/2007, -4/+6You mean 99% don't have enough motivation to do that. If there was a billion dollar prize, I would train many hours every day to achieve that goal.
- wrestlingnrj, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3"I feel comfortable in saying that if I trained for a month I could, make contact with a 98 mile fastball, gain 5 yards on a carry in the NFL, or score 2 points if I was in a NBA game. What I could never do is run that fast, no matter how I train."
That pretty much sums it up right there. - smrekar, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Buried for not having Emil Zatopek, the only person in history to win the olympic gold in the 5K, 10K and Marathon in the same day. Those are not hosted in the same day anymore, because of the recovery needed for multiple entries. Talk about some endurance and speed. Not to mention versatility.
- isunktheship, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2FINISHING FIRST.
- MattB123, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3I was about to make a similar post. I'm a runner/cyclist/skier type and pretty athletic. But I realize the professionals athlete are professionals because almost all other people can't do what they do. Since this is an endurance running blog, it's safe to assume the blogger is an endurance runner. It takes pretty different talent and skills to do those other sports than to run.
But if you can look past the blogger's attitude, it's a good collection of amazing endurance feats. - grakker, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2That is exactly what I thought. I was thinking I could do all of those, until I hit the NBA comment. Nope. Like someone saying that if they trained for a month they could do a kickflip on a half-pipe. Just not going to happen.
- schnikies79, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Running is life. Everything else is 2nd.
- MatchStick, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2u mean almost 2 hours
- MatchStick, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2digga pleaze
- inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2 He said PACE. That means you do the half mile in 2:13. Still think you can do it easily?
- MatchStick, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3greed... the downfall of western civilization
- grakker, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2How the hell can you "hate" Forest Gump? Running just to run. I can get behind that. He wasn't trying to set records, he wasn't trying for fame. Just running.
Why am I defending a fictional character? - liah, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Terry Fox?
- grakker, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Did you even read the comments above you?
- andy3109, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1If you trained for a month you most likely wouldn't be able to even get a shot off in the NBA without being blocked or stolen from. Thats the only true ***** on the list.
- TalksInMaths, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Every sport has its own measures. In the world of marathon swimming, 129 hours is really not that long. Obviously, still impressive and good on her, but it's not really that astounding.
- grakker, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1*****, you can't accidentally finish a marathon. Or finish badwater. I'm heading toward mid-life crisis and am very seriously looking toward doing one of these.
- andy3109, on 12/28/2007, -3/+46:40 is probably 6 minutes faster than most on digg.
- IndiShukla, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1just a taste of the vastness of human potential
- TalksInMaths, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1I think Dean Karnazes Endurance 50 (50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days) should be a listed feat (its mentioned, but should be its own). I ran with Dean during event 45 (North Carolina) and it was awesome. To say the dude is ripped is a huge understatement - muscles like you wouldn't believe. Plus, guy runs 50 marathons and his last one is NYC and he busts out a sub-3 hour run, AHEAD of Lance Armstrong. Simply amazing.
- dsb1, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Interestingly, there are few people who like to do these so called yoyo races; in particular there is the unofficial RockhardHardRock, where a runner starts at the finish, runs to the start in time for the official start, just to run the official race.
- spff, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Marathon Don Kern just completed 7 marathons on 7 continents twice this year. There are crazies everywhere! I believe he is the only person to do this three times total. Congrats Don!
http://www.cooladventures.net/ - Littleedgitt, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Actually i can...
- mikeTOOtall, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Actually a marathon is 26.2 miles.
- TalksInMaths, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Check your math - marathon is 26.2, with your estimate of 15mph it would take well over 1 hour. Plus, 15Mph can be comfortable for a little bit, but keeping that pace for 26 miles, over varying terrain and what-not, is something that you have to be in shape for - you couldn't go out and keep that without at least some training. I am a dedicated cyclist with a pro-level road bike and a couple years of both marathon running & long-distance cycling - IT AINT EASY
- TalksInMaths, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1I have no idea what your current fitness level is, but I think its a safe bet that you probably can't. If you're just getting off the couch, then getting anywhere near sub 2 minutes is just not going to happen. On the other hand, I know of lifetime runners, who have finished more marathons than most people can possibly fathom ("you mean you did more than one?!?!") that couldn't get within site of this. So, if you were an experienced runner, you'd know better than to post this.
Sub 2 800 is a sub 4 mile. You would have to be a current or recently ex HS/JUCO track standout (college athletes can already do this). Anything short of that, you'd probably have to be under 40 (or a VERY good masters runner) and already run about a 4:30 mile. At those distances, your times just don't drop that fast. Even if you currently run a 5:00 mile, you would need about 2 years (maybe more) of solid, dedicated, injury-free training to crack 2 in the 800. - TalksInMaths, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1If you include Badwater on the list you almost have to also include Sri Chinmoy.
3100 miles
Takes almost 2 months
The kicker?
Its all on the same HALF-MILE loop in Jamaica Queens; more than 7000 laps. Anyone who finishes this is a runner among runners. - grakker, on 12/29/2007, -1/+1Yeah, it was over 8 days. Still impressive.
- Chordinator, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1Yes, I do agree! Apparently, no one else does...
