I am from the US by the way, I just regret our lack of the beautiful game. - redlantern64, on 11/11/2009, -0/+15A lot of people don't realize that Buckner tried to commit suicide after that fateful error. The next day a distraught Buckner threw himself into the path of an oncoming bus.
However, it went right through his legs.
**Add instantrimshot.org sound effect here** - ThatNeilDude, on 11/11/2009, -0/+13They forgot Gary Anderson blowing a 38yd field goal that would have sent the Vikings to the Super Bowl in 1998.
I was 11 and I cried. - thegamingguy, on 11/10/2009, -0/+13Every list like this that has ever been written or will ever be written is known as Bill Buckner and some others. That guy's career (not so bad) is always the ground ball through the legs.

- gnomeh, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7I'll never forget that player in 1912 who did that thing... with the thing.. to cause that thing...
- Indyanna, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Bill "Billy Buck" Buckner was a workhorse of a baseball player. Over 22 seasons, his batting average was .289, on base percentage .321.
At the time of the famous ground-ball-through-the-legs incident, Buckner was having serious problems with his legs (knees, I think). So much so that he could hardly walk, but because he was such a large part of the reason the Red Sox success that year, it was decided he should play.
And yes, I think Buckner was one awesome ball player. - lordmike, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5Well, if you're going to mention Fred Snodgrass, might as well mention Merkle's Boner:

Snodgrass... Boner... I'm really glad the English language has significantly advanced since the early 20th century. - MrSteamTank, on 11/11/2009, -1/+5Soccer is the most popular sport world-wide because it's cheap and accessable to the whole world. All you need is a ball and some open space. Other more exciting sports like hockey and basketball our much harder to play on the fly.
I enjoy watching soccer especially because here in Uruguay people take it really seriously. Still I agree that it can at times be a very boring sport particularly because players get tired. I think the game needs more substitutions(double or triple the current 3) to improve the pacing(so they don't have to worry about running 90 minutes without getting subbed). - AiR1890, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3O.J Simpson used to be a football player?
- JustinTense, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3touché
Zizou is one of the greatest Footballers to ever play the game.
Besides his technical brilliance; the volley in the 2002 Champions League final is probably the first on field memory that comes to mind as soon as his name is brought up. - qotsa1, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3Fred Snodgrass' moment of failure was the moment he was named Fred Snodgrass

- Crosshare, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3"The Vikings most likely would have won their first super bowl."
It kills me when people make this statement so matter of fact. The Vikings struggled with the Falcons the entire NFC Championship game and the Broncos handled them easily in SB XXXIII. Yet I hear fans and analysts alike say the Vikings would've taken it all if they just beat the Falcons. People seem to forget that the Broncos had the league MVP in Terrell Davis who rushed for over 2000 yards that season, and a possible 5+ hall of famers on that team. - Megadeth222, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4You could make any sport sound bad by saying that....
What exactly is so beautiful about a bunch of guys throwing a round ball into hoops for an hour and a half?
What exactly is so beautiful about a bunch of guys throwing a football around for an hour and a half?
What exactly is so beautiful about a bunch of guys skating after some puck for an hour and a half?
What exactly is so beautiful about a bunch of girls in gymnastic clothing stretching, jumping around, and spreading their legs all over the place for an hour and a half?
Oh wait...scratch that last one... - rb1248, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3more boring than golf?
- lordmike, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2How about Ernest Byner fumbling the Brown's last best chance at a Super Bowl in January, 1988? I cried, too!
- lolerskate, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2It always nice to be remembered for being a failure.

"I do not! Google my stats!" - Megadeth222, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Have you ever seen baseball? GAH now that's boring....
And soccer has a sort of elegance and beauty to scoring, watch any soccer goal and the amount of talent and beauty behind every goal is just incredible to watch. Now take basketball for example, they score about 100 points per game, each score gets more and more boring, same thing, he either shot it and it went into the hoop, or he did a layup and it went into the hoop, I'm not saying it doesn't take talent, but its soo boring. Hockey is just so fast that a goal is just a flash of an instant. Football is cool. Every score in baseball has been the same.... But soccer.. *****, just watch this video and tell me it doesn't do it for you, tell me its not the greatest most exciting scoring any game could possibly have:

- cryinlion85, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1"This final infraction has doomed the placekicker to the ninth circle of Dante’s hell, along with traitors and people who buy stuff from spam e-mails."
i'm sorry, we were looking for "child molestors and people who talk at the theater". - Ron Glass. - NeonDistraction, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I think Elway and the Broncos would have had something to say about that.
- MixMastaKooz, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1From the comments: "Jackie Smith. . .Hall of Fame tight end who dropped an easy TD pass from Staubach in the Super Bowl against the Steelers and they ended up losing by 4 points."
I worked at a pub in St. Louis and Jackie Smith came in for a benefit of sorts. One of the servers, Brittany, accidentally dropped a glass of red wine on Jackie Smith! She was mortified. The next day, she tells me, "I told my dad I dropped a glass of wine on Jackie Smith! He said, 'Don't worry about it. He has dropped bigger things.'" - NeonDistraction, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Well that wasn't intended as a slight against soccer. I just wouldn't use the term 'beautiful' to describe it, nor would I for any sport. I love football, but beautiful is about the last word I would use to describe it.
- masivemunkey, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I don't think you watched the game. They definitely didn't struggle the entire game. They were up 20-7 before they fumbled the ball right before half time.
I guess I shouldn't have said it so matter of fact though, but in my opinion their offense was just so great (arguably the greatest offense ever) it would have been extremely hard for the broncos to contain them (especially since the broncos did not have a particularly strong pass defense).
It would have definitely been a great game, way better than the Falcons Broncos game.
BTW the Vikings had several possible HOFers on their team too (Randy Moss, Cris Carter, John Randle) and a HOF in Randall McDaniel - alrightwtf, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1yeah i'm from effin minnesota and hardly ever watch soccer and was almost a little insulted with that one
- alrightwtf, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1VIKINGS = .......yeah ***** that
- Gerakis100, on 11/22/2009, -1/+1That was his last game and it didn't ***** his career up... He's still regarded as probably the best footballer of the last 15 years
- OasisR123, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1this is about sports, no ladies games
- tyne101101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1Wow, Zidane's career is ***** up once he ***** himself over that headbutt. Nice going putz.
- Frostek, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1Laces out!
- masivemunkey, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1This is who I was thinking of when I read this list. Anderson was completely perfect that year, 0 missed field goals until the one that really mattered the most. The Vikings most likely would have won their first super bowl.
Hopefully they finally win their first this year. - mizzrym, on 11/11/2009, -3/+1Yes
- NeonDistraction, on 11/11/2009, -7/+5What exactly is so beautiful about a bunch of guys chasing a ball around a field for an hour and half?
- crazzy88ss, on 11/11/2009, -8/+1As a photographer, I love shooting ALL sports for my college, but soccer/football is the most boring sport of them all.
