- solid12345, on 11/19/2008, -3/+69I swear so many UFC fans and critics are such diva crybabies, he won, get over it. You can't just say "oh he won but he isn't a REAL fighter", if you win you win. Whether Lesnar can maintain his title who knows but don't ***** on him for competing.
- ScubaSt3ve, on 11/19/2008, -4/+41Not only did he win, but he looked impressive too. He was throwing knees, elbows and solid punches. And that's especially impressive considering how inexperienced he is - he seems to be learning quickly.
- billbugger, on 11/19/2008, -1/+22I think their website just lost the fight with Digg
- jer21, on 11/19/2008, -1/+21Those hammers he was throwing were ridiculous...the speed and power of those coming down on Couture, I swear he looked like he was going to crush him.
- hootie233, on 11/19/2008, -2/+20I think that Couture was handling him well for the most part
- bicyclethief, on 11/19/2008, -1/+17I think people ***** on Lesnar for a few reasons:
1) Winning a title after only 3 fights diminishes from MMA. Sure, he's a decorated collegiate wrestler, but so are fighters like Josh Koschek, and most would agree he's far, as of this writing, from being an MMA title contender.
2) Anybody who watches MMA knows that styles often make the matchup. As legendary and experienced as Randy is, Brock was just a bad matchup for him. Randy likes to out-wrestle and dirty-box people. Brock, with his freakish size and athleticism, could not be out-wrestled and would do more damage in a punching exchange, whether in the clinch or in the open. People are drawing far too much from this victory-- and beating Randy isn't to be taken lightly-- but they forget he was tapped in the first round just last fight against someone who's not even considered top 5 among all heavyweights.
3) Lesnar comes from entertainment wrestling. Enough said. - Lumbage, on 11/19/2008, -2/+17Anyone who considers or considered Kimbo Slice the best fighter in the world is not an MMA fan; not even a casual one. I guess it depends on what you mean by "casual," but someone who believes that Kimbo is the best doesnt know jack about MMA and is no kind of fan at all.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -7/+20You can't tell me a person weighing 220 and a person weighing 285 is true competition in any professional combat sports league. That's like a feather-weight fighting a light-heavyweight.
There needs to be another weight class. This isn't UFC 1 folks, people know how to competitively fight now.
On a side note, I want to see a Lesnar v. Mir rematch. - ToddSchishler, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12I understand that Lesnar fought in the WWE, but why do people forget he was a NCAA Division-I runner-up in his junior year, and champion in his senior?
- Blydchyld, on 11/19/2008, -0/+11The guy won.
Gratz. - bicyclethief, on 11/19/2008, -0/+11Oh and I forgot to add:
4) Most MMA fans didn't think Lesnar deserved a title shot in the first place. He was 1-1 in the UFC. The fighter he did beat, Heath Herring, isn't even a title contender by any stretch. - solid12345, on 11/19/2008, -2/+10And let's be honest, Kimbo got a raw deal. He did what he did to make money and feed his family, what is wrong with that. It's not his fault people hyped him up, and regardless it brought more mainstream attention to MMA, and Dana White is one to talk considering he is the one who basically propped MMA into the limelight with a cheesy soap opera "reality" show.
- bicyclethief, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8Just because some TUFers are idiots and unprofessional doesn't mean there aren't good, legit fighters among them.
Case in point: Kenny Florian is a product of that reality show.
By the way, TUF has probably brought in more new American MMA fans than anything else. - kcsobo, on 11/19/2008, -1/+9Google cache:

- SuperMoses, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6Big Nog will be Lesnar. To say there's a big size advantage between Lesnar and Nog is irrelevant. First of all, big Nog is 240 lbs.. second of all, his skill is brazilian jiu jitsu which is allows smaller fighters to beat bigger fighters. Just look at Mir's win over Lesnar and now consider that Big Nog is 10x time the BJJ fighter that Mir is.
- caulkrocket, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6If you're in the business of beating the ***** out of people - and you beat the ***** out of someone - is there really much reason for debate? I don't see why people scoff at an ex-professional wrestler. He obviously has the look of someone who can beat the ***** out of people.
- Ogre73, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6This is honestly the worst thing that could have happened to Brock Lesnar. He now has a gigantic bullseye on that enormous back of his and there are plenty of big heavyweights in the UFC that have the size and talent combination (probably not raw strength, but the Gracies proved long ago that did not matter in the Octagon..) to take him down. Here's a short list of guys that Lesnar goes down to if he fought them today:
- Big Nog
- Feydor
- Tim Silvia
- Gabriel Gonzaga
- Cheick Kongo
Anyone care to add any? - swrostmore, on 11/19/2008, -5/+11Lesnar ’s size and strength wasn't "too much" for Couture at all... he just landed a lucky punch.
I can't wait to watch Minotauro tear his arm off. - swrostmore, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6As a side note, Lesnar vs Mir will never happen, because Nog is going to kill Mir first.
- tamman2000, on 11/19/2008, -1/+6@solid12345
Perhaps because there was a real MMA tournament in the reality show?
Just a thought... - Pimpalicious316, on 11/19/2008, -2/+7not sure I'd go that far, but Randy did do far better than I expected. He simply couldn't control him in the clinch or keep him on the ground. there was a moment when Randy got Brock's back, but Lesnar managed to pull Randy by his leg around himself (Brock) and dump him on the mat and come up in top position. Handling well...not quite.
And the vicious elbow that wobbled Couture was gorgeous. At real-speed I thought he just missed a punch, but the slow motion replay shows it was an intentional and brutal elbow strike. - ohgeetee, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5The problem with this, is that if HW were split into 2 divisions, current HW that don't cut would simply cut down to the new limit, and Brock would stand alone fighting a bunch of genetic oddities with no real talent.
The HW division is still thin, and Randy, while losing, still showed that a talented wrestler can overcome that size difference. He was on his way to completely wearing Lesnar out, and just got caught with a nice punch. I don't forsee Mir beating Nog, nor do I forsee Brock beating Nog. Nog is just as difficult to hold down as Randy is, and Brock showed he couldn't keep him down. Nog will turn that opportunity into a nice kneebar/heelhook.
In 2 years, I suspect Brock will have held every defending champ record in the UFC, title defenses, consecutive wins, etc. Right now though, he is still learning, and still has plenty of holes that size doesn't fill. - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't call it a lucky punch. He has a giant fist, and half of it caught Randy. The punch that KO's Faber could probably be called a lucky punch.
But yes, I can't wait to see Nog submit Lesnar. That day is coming, just not soon enough... - inevitablity, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5Oh yeh another weight class with a whopping two competitors. The heavyweight division is thin as is, it doesn't need to be made any thinner, thanks. Brock Lesnar has his advantages due to size but he's also an awesome athlete who deserves respect at his win due to hard training not just being bigger.
A year ago Fedor fought a 7' 3" monster of a human being and beat him with ease size is only an advantage if you know how to use it. Give Brock his props, for now, while we wait for Noguiera to take his rightful title back. - mrinternet, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5Lesnar continues to get booed at UFC events. Folks knowing TV wrestiling is 'staged/planned', do not realise that big is still big, powerful is still powerful, skilled is still skilled, and MY GOD his hands are actually the biggest in UFC history. Folks do not realise how powerful his fists must be. Now that a wrestler has won the UFC title, it will be interesting to see if this helps or hurts the sport. It needs another Gracie like persona. It will be interesting to se how the UFC evolves.
- mikev2008, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4Fedor is not even human
- bicyclethief, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3@CraigB12
First off, I don't think anyone can diminish Brock's win over Randy. Beating Randy is an impressive feat no matter what.
But I argue his win does diminish from MMA. And here's why: MMA fighters win based on matchup contrasts regularly. But to be proven a real champion, an MMA fighter has to be tested against a wide range of styles and fighter abilities. It's why fighters like GSP, Anderson Silva, and Fedor are so well respected. They've proven their champion caliber by taking on and beating wrestlers, strikers, and BJJ black belts alike. Brock, on the other hand, gets tapped by Mir, convincingly decisions an unexceptional Heath Herring, and then beats Randy for the title.
Brock may have the championship belt, but he's yet to prove himself a champion in many people's eyes. - tamman2000, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I thought the McCrory Hazelett fight was the best of the night, but I really like watching MMA that turns into a ju jistu match....
- jba68, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4I've seen plenty of big dudes get taken out my significantly smaller dudes in mma and ufc, so I consider the figths fair. 220 is not small. Smaller than 285 sure, but not small.
- mnemy, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4He was doing well until he tried to take him down. That was a dumb idea. He expended wayyy too much energy trying to lift that monster up. From then on, he was just a bit too slow and it was just a matter of time before Lesnar landed one of those huge hits.
- Trifold, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Got me. I am dumb.
- andrewlotta, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4There are other weight classes according to the UFC wiki, the UFC just doesn't use them.
Wikipedia quote:
In addition, there are four other weight classes specified in the Unified Rules which the UFC does not currently utilize: Flyweight (under 125 lb, 57 kg), Bantamweight (126 to 135 lb, 61 kg), Featherweight (136 to 145 lb, 66 kg), and Super Heavyweight ( above 265 lb, 120 kg). - JigoroKano, on 11/19/2008, -2/+5"I've seen a bunch of fights"
No you haven't. - diskoh, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Lesnar cuts to 265 for weigh-ins, so he would still be in the Heavyweight division.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I thought Lesnar was incredibly gracious and respectful, even as he was being booed.
- bicyclethief, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3@LordPhoenyx
You're right, Couture did basically do the same thing. But a difference is that the UFC heavyweight division was pretty thin at the time. Back then, it was pretty much Tim Sylvia, Arlovski, and that's about it. Since then, with the influx from Pride and other collapsed organizations, the UFC heavyweight division is stacked in comparison. There was no reason other than marketability and viewership as to why Lesnar got a title shot when Big Nog was far more deserving due to his record and past performances. - krets, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Forrest Griffin?
You're out of your mind. - CraigB12, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3@bicyclethief
1. He beat the champion, making him the champion. Giving him a title shot after 3 fights is suspect, but I don't think you can diminish the win after the performance he put on.
2. I'm not sure it's Brock's freakish size that's the issue here. I think the issue is that Randy should never have been a heavyweight champ. It was only because of the shoddy talent in that weight class that Randy rose to the top. Beating guys like the big Oph Tim Sylvia really doesn't impress anyone. Randy had to gain 20 lbs. for this fight to reach the minimum, and he really didn't beat any of the current contenders to keep his title (Mir, Fedor, etc.) Brock lost to Frank Mir, so I don't think the belt will be staying around Brock's waist very long.
3. You can't fault a guy for filling in a few years between college and finding his actual career with a fighting soap opera. - krets, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Stop picking on five year olds.
- NealKasper, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I think he ment "raaasler", not wrestler. Raaaasling..... like WWF raaasling.
- Pimpalicious316, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3you are delusional if you think timmay or kongo could take lesnar. nog will almost certainly beat him via absorbing lunchboxes until a submission appears from his ass. fedor would dominate by whatever he wants. and gonzaga i see would be a toss up standing, but a definitive win on the ground.
I'd like to toss in overeem as a for sure win over brock. - tamman2000, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3@LordPhoenyx
Couture joined the UFC in it's infancy... It was much smaller back then, there simply weren't as many people you had to prove yourself against before you were considered good enough to fight for the title.
A better comparison would be Jon Fitch. Captain of the Purdue wrestling team and 8-0 in the UFC before he got a title shot. - Croaton, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2It's only gay if you make eye contact... ;)
http://www.ratemyeverything.net/image/7338/0/Jiu_J ... - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5the real question:
when ***** like this is a sport, how is it that SlamBall and the XFL became extinct? - browe07, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2"1. Does a new weight class need to be added between Light Heavyweight (186-205 pounds) and Heavyweight (206-265 pounds)?
Our answer: Yes."
No no no no no. Look at Boxing. What happens when you add too many weight classes is you dilute the talent pool in each class and make it tougher to put together big fights. Besides when you get up to those weights, bigger doesn't always mean better. Lesner is a freak at how well he is able to carry his size, but in all actuality he's a little too big and some smaller, more agile and more skilled fighter will shred him in a one-sided decision. - snareguy17, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Awesome, I didn't get a chance to catch the fight.
- andrewlotta, on 11/19/2008, -2/+4This was the first UFC I have watched and watching Lesnar/Couture I will definitely be watching upcoming UFC main events.
I'm not going to lie though. I was most entertained by the heavyweight Lesnar/Couture fight. It's too bad it ended so early. -
