- ut713, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13It was made by USA Today.
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11missing - buster douglas knocks out tyson and barkley's "i am not a role model"
i also think that they went in the wrong direction w/ the jordan selection (plus, they got it wrong, that was his 2nd retirement). the bigger 'story' was how jordan ushered in the era of sports star as global icon and endorsement master. he took it to a whole other level. hell, he made bald cool, that's saying something.
as mike and mike were saying this morning, you can pretty much remove all of those college basketball games to make room for some of these. - jasnmb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10How the heck is "24 Pervasiveness of ESPN" on this list!? That's not a great sports story. I'm even more confused as to how it beat "25 Gretzky sets NHL scoring record".
- schmons, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8from an article on USA Today
what did you expect?
edit: ut713 beat me - Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Yeah, this is stupid.
The US women's soccer team winning the world cup is the soccer story of the past 25 years? Give me a break. - dustblaaze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think Jordans last shot against Utah in game 6 of the NBA Finals should've been ranked higher. The man who globalized basketball going out and sinking the game winning jumper for the NBA title was so picture perfect.
- fissionignition, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7i think i'd put Tyson's ear chomp before Douglas' victory
- Revacard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6NFL is the top sport the past 25 years, and yet no NFL stories except O.J. Simpson?
- ut713, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That didn't happen in the last 25 years
- haydesigner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@ omgwtfroflmaox2: "No Muhammad Ali stories? At least put the story of him refusing the draft in there. That was big."
Did it happen *since* 1982?
Either you completely missed the point of the article, or your math skills suck. - SpeedyG, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It's clear that whoever wrote this is a pretty solid baseball fan. (It's a USA Today article, so you can go on for days about stuff like World Cups, Senna's death, so on and so forth, but whatever.)
I would think that in such a list of the greatest sports stories, that you'd go for the ones that have recognition outside of the sports community. Pretty much all the scandals, for starters. Like the Tyson/Holyfield fight. Evidently we'd much rather go for random crucial World Series moments. - moosepile, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's such a let-down when the #1 is at the top of the list.
It's akin to having sex backwards. - canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yeah but tyson was washed up by that point. prior to buster, he was the baddest man on the planet and en route to becoming the greatest of all-time. post buster; tyson goes bat ***** insane and boxing diappears from relevance. seriously, since mike, has there been one heavyweight worth watching? boxing peaked that night, and it hasn't recovered since.
- Noek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That was in 1980, 2 years too early.
- speedk0re, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6this list sucks
too much crap to warrant an itemized description of why - HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3***** the Red Sox. Seriously.
They aren't the only team that didn't win the World Series for a long time. They're just the whiniest. - jamauss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5that was a weak-ass list. sorry. Half of them don't even belong on the list if it can only be 25 long. Was this even done by a sports-writer?
- spidoman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The women's world cup win is the only soccer moment I remember from the past 25 years, minus the headbutt. The Sports Illustrated cover is one of the most memorable in a long long time.
- Y2JCrisis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Not true. Japan loves baseball. South America loves baseball. Mexico loves baseball.
Now cricket, there's a sport nobody gives a ***** about. - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I assume so, since he wrote about him.
- alexf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maglob, did that stab in the dark come from the fact that it is written by USA TODAY?
- dustblaaze, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8You've been dugg down for being a whiny british bastard.
- drcato, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The 2004 ALCS was a much better story than the world series. Red Sox overcame a 3 - 0 deficit to take the series against their rivals, the New York Yankees - a feat which had never been done before in baseball. World series was a bore compared to that.
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -2/+4Lance was only 21, but single plays and mediocre championship games beat it out? (Flutie's pass, walk-off homer, a jump shot, and '99 Women's world cup?! WHAT?!) Lance is considered by many to be one of the most perfect examples of an athlete, but they felt he was only 21?
Despite my hatred for the Patriots, how are they not even mentioned, but the OJ trial is even though its not a sports story other than a former player for years prior is the center figure? Theres NINE (9) baseball stories, but no mention of one of the biggest "legacies" in NFL history? (It hurt me to say that, trust me)
Buried. - Morphinity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm confused how a lot of those made it past Gretzky.
I'd also say the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994 after 44 year drought should be up there. - jagermeistr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i wasnt real crazy about this article. the red sox winning the world series was not the biggest sports story in 25 years. It doesnt have that crossover effect where something that happens in sport spills over to the realm of society at large. I would put magic johnson hiv+ much higher, as a previous poster said m.jordans HUGE popularity and dominance in the 90's (im not even a basketball fan and these were very important for sports in the US, which is what i think this article is focusing on), and the oj simpson trial which brought up a lot of issues of race in this country.
Had it been world wide, im sure zidanes headbutt would be in there. - sQPha7e, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Where is the music city miracle?
Lame top 25. - dustblaaze, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Keyword: USA
- ThickFog, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Top 25 American Sport Stories of the last 25 years would be the correct title.
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3I think (correct me if I'm wrong), the name of the news agency is "USA Today". You know, that MIGHT have something to do with it- just a hunch.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2are you kidding me? your highlights suck - no one gives 2 ***** about a hockey trade, and bo jackson isn't the only one to play football and baseball..
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's not bigger than BALCO.
Big? Yep. Bigger than a lot of stories on here? Yep. Bigger than BALCO? Nope. - brownzilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That was my reaction. And Boston winning, the only people that gave a ***** about that was Boston. Only reason anyone else cared was the hope of not hearing them whine about being cursed.... so much for that. I hope Boston and New York don't win a championship again in any sport for my lifetime
- nubs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1agreed my man, it was an amazing amazing run, it should have made at least made it somewhere on the list
- ThinkRad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wtf is this? There's one hockey moment, and it's Wayne Gretzky @ # 25. ***** USA Today. I've felt more informed reading the ingredients in dog food. This article is nothing but a huge ass-kissy fluff piece for people who aren't real sports fans. No Olympic Miracle Team who beat the ***** commies and made us feel good about ourselves? No '04-'05 lockout? No stunning comeback finals series in '06? Buried for a being a slurry of diarrhea dog *****, ball hairs and minced cow tongue.
- zioxide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree that the ALCS itself was a better series of games and that beating the Yankees was probably more of a World Series than the actual World Series, but we had to win the games against St. Louis to get the rings.
- Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't mention the Ashes....
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3By the way, it is not my desire that digg be split into 'USA' and 'Everywhere else' sections. Until earlier, I didn't care that most stories were US centric. On a site comprised mostly of US users, it is to be expected, and I just ignored any that weren't relevant to me. But after the retarded whinging and ranting in the earlier topic that just happened to be UK-centric, I feel it's appropriate to point it out in the next few US diggs.
This would of course be a lot easier if everyone from the other topic grew up and just ignored any topics that weren't relevant to them, but on the internet that's too much expectation I think. - mongo25, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Here wondering how many times I'm going to have to read Europeans crying about a list from "USA TODAY" excluding the European community, followed by a "dumb, fat American" diatribe.
No one in the US watches the rugby league championship. The USA TODAY, although a crappy publication, has a target audience of... GASP!!! Americans (How dare they!!!).
It's all a matter of geography. Ofcourse the Europeans know more about what is going on in France, Germany, etc. You have a 31 mile channel between England and France. It's ~400 miles from London to Frankfurt. I'm in Chicago, I go 400 miles and I can't even reach Omaha, Nashville, or Pittsburgh... I'm well aware of affairs in those cities. I'm well aware of affairs in Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America, OUR PART OF THE WORLD.
Can any of you Euros name one prime minister or leader of a south american country other than Chavez, off the top of your head? Doubtful. Get off your high horse. - tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe people would take 'u' seriously if 'u' typed proper English.
- brownzilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You only say the cause US soccer is so awful
- Slash23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Miracle on Ice" .. Where the heck is that?! That has been argued as possibly the greatest sports story ever, and one of, if not THE greatest upset in sports history. Along with the idea that it social and political implications.
- bilbravo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's in 1980
My question is, where is 'The Play'... that was in 1982. - ricree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The wikipedia article has an explanation. The short version is a combination of tradition and the fact that the high pay in the US tends to draw a lot of the best players in the world here, so presumably the winner can be considered the best team in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_series#International_impact.2C_and_explanation_of_the_term_.22World.22_Series
It's not exactly the best reasoning in the world, but at least there is some reasoning, I suppose. - Y2JCrisis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I gotta agree.... when the Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 45 years, that was a pretty great sports story.
But lets face it, Hockey isn't really all that popular, and Baseball is America's greatest past time. - maglob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@alexf
lol, yeah I did see, but i was just pointing out the lack of any sort of sports knowledge other than American sports, so it isn't "25 Greatest Sports Stories of the Last 25 Years" but 25 Greatest American Sports Stories of the Last 25 Years.
But fair comment - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2here in America we call that being redundant seeing as those it was a USA Today article
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The headbutt isn't a big deal. It just happened recently, that's all.
If anyone remembers in 10 years, then it's a big deal. - ToddIU03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thos whiny Boston fans get in there twice and it took the White Sox longer to win a World Series title? What a joke. How about the Steve Bartman incident?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why does Magic Johnson have HIV and Arthur Ashe had AIDS?
I can't see the Arthur Ashe story as a very big deal. It's only fractionally bigger than Greg Louganis indicating he has AIDS.
Russia boycotting the 1984 Olympics was a pretty big deal too. -
