- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That is an ignorant statement. You must not watch much professional poker.
From Rounders, one of my favorite movies:
"Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker EVERY YEAR? What, are they the luckiest guys in Las Vegas?" - Liste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is really quite an incredible achievement. Add in the third place from a tournament on 7/25/6 to the 2 first places, and it is almost beyond belief. To put it into perspective, there were 670 players when he came third, and 1579 and 507 players with his two firsts. Clearly there was a good deal of luck involved, but to get himself to 3 final tables requires a lot of talent. Especially when you consider the many professionals who have never won a bracelet over many years (e.g Eric Lindgren, who Madsen just beat out in the most recent win).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not bad, 1.4 million in 5 days.
I really need a new career path - Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Congrats to this guy. I played a lot of poker casually in college and I love watching the WSOP. It takes real skill and mental ability to win those tournaments. To use a little poker terminology:
Jeff possessed the two things every poker player aspires to have: balls and the nuts. - Srezic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They used to before internet gambling became such a fad.
- d1on1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe you should read into the World Series of Poker. The main event alone takes around 2 weeks to finish. Before the main event 38 other events are played, and as soon as we are a few days into the main event other events will start again. Most events are 2 or 3 days. At the end of the WSOP a total of 45 events will be finished, main being the 39th.
The two most important ones are the main event (which will have a lot (5000 ) players) and HORSE, which had a buyin of (no typo) $50.000. - NerdyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seems to me that he's not so much cocky as being thrilled to win.
Fine by me, just don't take my money. - cochiseTX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty great accomplishment. But you have to put it into perspective here, it isn't like there isn't precedent. Scott Fischman won 2 bracelets at the age of 23 in his first year at the WSOP as well.
There are many amazing accomplishments by poker players these days. Greg Raymer making the final 25 players in the Main Event last year after winning the year before was very impressive to me. It showed that he wasn't, unlike a certain Moneymaker, a one-shot wonder.
But congrats to Madsen. On a side note, doesn't it seem like bracelet winners get younger and younger every year? Hopefully someone will just win on their 21st birthday and put an end to it :) - Rosewood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like poker. No, I love poker. I like watching poker every once and awhile. But I have no clue how the tournaments and games and all that ***** is layed out. 2 tournaments in 5 days?
- d1on1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They might even do that in this WSOP, still a few events (including the main event) left. It would be a real kicker if he wins that one too, around 8000 players will start it (first 4 days are to play 2000 down to 800, ending up with 'just' 3200 after 4 days of cards).
- Liste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK. Its official..he is a freak. He is now leading yet another tournament (seven-card stud) with only 68 of 788 players left.
- anthony0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only time will tell.
I've played poker long enough and know that variance is everything. He certainly could have gotten very lucky here. Happens in poker all the time and then you never hear of them again. Doyle Burnson is a legend because he's been a consistent winner over a long period of time. That is true skill. - RicDesan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is so much skill involved in maximizing the luck you get when it comes that non-players cant even buy a clue. Game of chance indeed! The greats are the ones that weigh every nuance in every situation to know EXACTLY what to do to extract the maximum value for whatever action they take. Now, That's world class poker!
- onikage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Is that so? Then appearances must be deceiving.
- DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Poker is as much a sport as politics is civil. Sitting on your ass and playing cards is NOT a sport. This should be in Gaming.
- m0n3y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Migdilio
I like how you quote HOLLYWOOD to make a point about not being ignorant. =P Although you're both kinda right. Even Phil Ivey has been quoted as saying, "Skill gets you only so far in a game of chance." - aaalejandro757, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0Congratulations!! I played a lot of poker casually in college. Its good to get such a big amount…Bracelets Diamond and many other items…:) http://www.ultradiamonds.com/jewelry/categories/di ...
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course I don't watch much professional poker, I also don't watch bridge, dominoes or paint dry but my TV watching habits have nothing to do with this discussion. You are the one being ignorant for challenging my assesment that poker is a game of CHANCE...there is no debating it. I actually like playing poker but lets not make it out to be chess or something. It's a card game, nothing more!
- ninjatroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So is this kid a savant, or just a huge *****?
Aren't the best poker players total and complete bastards? - edwardbarski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comment about Poker being skill or chance. The chance lies in the value of the two cards in your hand vs the value of the 5 cards dealt on the flop, turn, and river. The skill lies in minimizing losses when you don't have the best hand and maximizing profit when you do have the best hand. It is both, but saying no skill is involved is ridiculous and honestly, the people who believe skill does not exist in poker are the people i want to face at the table. Here fishy fishy fishy. Let the fool be parted from his money quickly as the chance for him to exhibit his skill will quickly fade.
- pokeronline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+021 and he has two titles, wow. That's just too cool!
- Bluth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ya. The only thing is the same five guys don't make it to the WSOP every year. I mean EVERY YEAR.
- synmoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes, it is an incredible achievement. However, I think he is doing himself a disservice by being so cocky. The comments made about the other great players are a mistake. Undoubtedly, next year, everyone at every table he sits at will be gunning for him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That must be nice....
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Good for the kid but I don't see this as a tremndously big deal. While there is obviously some skill involved, when it comes down to it poker is still just a game of chance!
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2High five to Jeff but god he looks like a fool
- GerryDaman, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Holy jeez. I'm in Korea teaching English and most teachers make millions too--in Korean Won that is. Normally it's around 2.0-2.4million Won. Good job on this kid though...amazing.
Ever wonder what it would be like to teach in Korea? Check out my blog:
