- B1665r, on 07/19/2009, -1/+32Makes me feel like I didn't have parents who could give me a sailing yacht when I was 17...
- palehorse864, on 07/19/2009, -0/+25I've never met a 17 year old who wasn't a teenager.
- zombo, on 07/19/2009, -1/+17You may berate him for having rich parents but at least he's making the most of the opportunities wealth has given him.
- jayg92, on 07/19/2009, -3/+16as another 17 year old british lad, this makes me feel like a failure :(
- PhilMoskowitz, on 07/19/2009, -1/+11Sailing is just one of the best things in the world. Don't pass up a chance if you've never done it.
- hallo2u, on 07/19/2009, -4/+12im sorry but its hard for to me to admire the accomplishment of someone if hes sponsored by his rich ass parents (you may choose where to put the hyphen)
- grantmoore3d, on 07/19/2009, -1/+7I'm inspired to bitch at my parents for not being rich.
- sedawk, on 07/19/2009, -1/+7It's been done before:
http://www.bluemoment.com/dove.html
By a 16 year old boy, no GPS, no money, in a tiny 24 sailing boat.
I would recommend reading the book; an amazing story. - codyman, on 07/19/2009, -2/+7*****, I consider visiting Tijuana a "cultural experience"....
- Signed the Forever Southern California Kid who Accomplishes Jack-***** - alisiacam, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4As a fellow sailor, I have to appriciate this kid. Every offshore race I go in makes me realise how much it sucks to be on a moving sail boat 24/7. The fact this kid is circling the globe by himeself is incredible. The isolation would drive me mad.
I've also got to give him a hand for playing it safe. Every photo I've seen of totallymoney.com has had a reef in the mainsail and a fractional jib up. If it were me I'd have the boat going as fast as I could all of the time. Which probably means I'd never get around the world without capsizing or breaking a mast. So kudos for the self control! - Kaiern, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Strange. Neither have I.
- LAmandingo, on 07/19/2009, -4/+7Another rich white kid so whats your point?
Have the kid built the yacht, use no electronic instruments or communications and I'll be impressed.
With a free yacht, every modern tool money can buy and no other obligations such as job or wife and kids how can he go wrong? I mean seriously, how much was the yacht? Did he really think it was gonna spring a leak? With internet access to check weather conditions he could avoid any bad weather.
Basically he played video games for a year and being 17 there was probably alot of monkey spanking going on since there was no one around. - Chachuka, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2Would have been better/more interesting if it were a hot chick. just sayin'
- everywhereasign, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2Excellent book, but it took him much longer to make it all the way around. He also stopped various places and got married, had a kid, and such.
- givemeabeer, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2read the article, he bought the sail boat himself.
- NorrisOBE, on 07/19/2009, -1/+3Wow, Inspiring.
I'm planning to travel from Alaska to Argentina by motorcycle, kicking Che Guevara and Alberto Granado's asses when i finish my degree. - FlamingGuts, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1i saw this kid on the news. he's a real ***** :(
- B1665r, on 07/19/2009, -1/+2OH come on! I couldn't do that when I was 17... Maken me feel like a total failure now.
- barroni, on 07/19/2009, -3/+4My biggest accomplishment at 17 was drinking a bottle of JD's without throwing up
Go luck to you mike
- ucuntu, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Lol, you don't get born 'on' England, dummy!
- Math, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Bah. In my day we didn't have fancy tools to build a boat. Modern kids are so spoilt.
He should use floaties to just swim it and be happy for it.
I had swum around the world twice by the age of four. - inactive, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1heh heh yachtboy
- DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -1/+2Good for him.
If he wanna waste his time sailing around in some salty water, then go for it. - Frankyfan3, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Repetitive headline is repetitive.
- MrWolf710, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1In Future News: 17 year old dies after trying to sail around the world. He will be missed.
- grapesofbaath, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1I hope he was really doing it for the experience and not the record, because these kind of records are stupid and no one cares. Wow, for a few months you're the youngest rich white kid to sail a boat for a really long time. Congratulations.
- paultrip, on 07/19/2009, -4/+4Ah, how nice the very rich get a sponsor to pay for their little boys play time..... Sorry I think this is stupid!
- DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -0/+0a real cool dude.
- chiefbandit2200, on 07/19/2009, -2/+2True, but I can still be jealous of him because when I was 17 I was sitting bored in high school, and he has the opportunity to sail around the world.
- DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -0/+0yes you do.
You don't get born IN and island you get born ON an island.
England is an island. You get born on England. - Infoslo, on 07/19/2009, -0/+0Brave!
- tomserito, on 07/19/2009, -2/+0FTA: "He's certainly not one to waste his day in front of a computer screen. He loves to be outdoors."
...and yet here I am reading about him on digg. I feel like the boy's dad is speaking directly to me. Then again maybe I'm just projecting. - amanilaenvelope, on 07/19/2009, -3/+1Yeah, I don't know why I wrote that either....or this.
Just bury it like usual. stupid insomnia. - DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -3/+1TAKE A LOOK AT ME!
- Venkatsubramane, on 07/19/2009, -3/+1Good God. I am so sick of reading about this rich kid. I hope he gets hijacked. Where are those Somali pirates when you need them?
- allenglines878, on 07/19/2009, -3/+0Doesn't he know what century it is?
- DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -3/+0Oh, and i hope he gets taken hostage by some somali pirates.
- gusyehia, on 07/19/2009, -3/+0thats great ..
- RegularUser, on 07/19/2009, -4/+1Oh crikey!
- Borstal, on 07/19/2009, -9/+5IM ON A BOAT *****!
- DonAlfred, on 07/19/2009, -7/+1I would feel like a failure too, if i was born on England.
- amanilaenvelope, on 07/19/2009, -11/+2Front page and no comments?
...dayuummmm.
