- jontalisman, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6He certainly had some spectacular moments. Shame he lost it after Cus D'Amato died.
- jontalisman, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6Btw, just saw this great video of Muhammad Ali and Cus D'Amato discussing Ali's 1970 fight with Joe Frazier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoPTogbAyPM
- jboitnott, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5An odd situation here. I've had to re-submit this story because in its original form the digg was a link to a forum that linked to a blog. Digg banned it because their spam protection might have a blanket policy that assumes I was trying to link to a blog that had been banned. That is not the case. Regardless. I had to re-submit it because I felt the quality of the material was so useful and unique. So enjoy!
- mikkee07, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5No Tyson there? He was quite scandalous but good boxer
- jontalisman, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4Dugg 'cause I like boxing, but I think this list is pretty lame. Larry Holmes, ffs! How 'bout George Foreman? Even Evander Holyfield would have been a better choice than Holmes, whose era was marked by a lack of quality fighters.
- Waiting2awake, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Because he was carefully handled. Because every time he stepped up he was knocked down, and not just knocked down but Knocked out. Add to that the pompas behaviour and it got really tired. You simply can't call yourself great when you are paying people money not to fight you.
Now that said he wasn't bad. But his handlers saw him more of a cash cow than a real fighter, and thus his choice of fights and his legacy suffered. - mysportsrumors, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2good old digg craziness with this one
- jboi, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3Problem is that George Foreman was better then Ali.
Just watch some random George Foreman matches and then watch rumble in the jungle and go "wtf".
Ali was great as a men, but the best in the ring, i have my doubts. - Waiting2awake, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Foreman was a bully, like Liston before him and Tyson after him. Once Ali showed Foreman he wasn't afraid of him, and had the continent chanting "Ali kill him!", that caused Foremen to doubt himself.
I have a film where they were interviewing George several years after his comeback started going through that fight and at one point he said " I had him, I had him against the ropes and I hit him. I hit him hard. So hard it should have killed anyone else. His eyes fluttered back into his head and he was out - and just like that his eyes came back and he looked right at me with indignation with a look that said "You are not going to hurt me", and I thought ohhh boy am I in for it" - silverleaves, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Down goes Frasier, down goes Frasier. Ali will always be my favorite. Foreman because he had the nerve to get in the ring at 50. That took guts!
Mike Tyson might have been a good fighter if he wasn't so absolutely crazy. A good fighter doesn't bite someones ear off. A street fighter does that. - devoted, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Ali was definitely the best
- Alneo, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Nice! Ali! Ali! Ali!
- cybrspin, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1yup to bad he was a whack job, could a been the best boxer ever if he a mind like ali had in his prime.
- almasa, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Thanks for your offer to read this interesting article.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Wasn't Jake LaMotta a heavyweight?
- sephiroth965, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Screw heavyweights. Kelly Pavlik kicks more ass than any of 'em.
- Darph.Bobo, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1Larry Holmes has no business being on this list. If he fought a decent fighter it was when they were past their prime. During his reign as WBC champ from 1978-1983 there was the greatest void in quality HW fighters history of boxing. He fought hand-picked bums and tin cans (This was loosely mirrored in Rocky III).
These lists can be argued 'til the end of time but one thing is certain. Larry Holmes was the most BORING HWC in history, 98% of his fights you could have slept through because the roar of the crowd would not have awoke you. - ichbeineinrcg, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1I don't understand why so many boxing historians hate Mike Tyson. If it's because he's a nutjob, then we have to discount pretty much anyone who ever stepped into the ring. If it's because they don't like the era he fought in, that's not fair to the man and what he did. If it's because he's got a criminal record, that has absolutely nothing to do with what he accomplished in the ring.
Any top-10 heavyweights list that doesn't include Mike Tyson is immediately crap. - tofslie, on 04/28/2008, -2/+1No Rocky? I will break you.
