Viva... - CobaltBlue, on 08/04/2008, -0/+9Digg is getting to me too. I read it as "YouTube to stream Olympics to 77 territories. All banks failed. Second great depression started. Ron Paul elected president. Apple only company to survive."
- lnxfi, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8I think Digg is getting ot me - I read that as "YouTube to stream Olympics to 77 terrorists"
- soccernamlak, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8La Vida
- tomz17, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7Yeah... great idea... let's just all go find this mythical proxy with MASSIVE amounts of upstream bandwidth hosted in some ***** country where no one has even bothered to negotiate for the broadcast rights to the OLYMPICS... I'm sure it'll work great!
- Games4Life, on 08/04/2008, -1/+8*Video was removed due to copyright claims*
- scy1192, on 08/04/2008, -2/+9Geo-blocking? Nothing a proxy can't get around.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6Sweet, well done Youtube.
- zadadka, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6How amusing.
If your nations' Citizens can afford it, they may be charged Pay Per View.
If your Citizens can't afford PPV, your nations will be charged for highlights of a couple of hours of daily, heavily edited, material.
If your nations and citizens can't afford the edited material, don't worry, YouTube will cover it for you.
Which begs the question :
Who is being ripped off here?
OK, the YouTube content will be comparatively low quality, but it all comes from the same cameras, with only the output feeds being doctored to "reduce the experience".
Why, why, why, can't such an international staged event be presented for what it is?
A rare example of humankind participating together in competitive games that transcend political (and any other) upheaval, celebrating the outcome of the many dedicated individuals who compete against each other to succeed in their chosen fields, just as the Olympiad originally intended?
Oh, wait....I think I may have the answer :
The Olympics....the Every-Four-Years-Christmas-like-Commercial-Exploit of participants (required by the IOC to hold "amateur" status) and viewers alike.
So now I think, well, if the sportsmen & women who give literally years of endeavour for almost no reward got some sort of "cut" on revenues for their incredible efforts in even qualifying for the Olympics, I might consider PPV, but as it is, I just see more "fat cats" getting fatter on the exertions of others, so now I think IOC = an RIAA equivalent.....
Rant over.
Good luck to them all....if they are not fortunate enough to carry away a medal, may they carry away the pride of their own richly deserved personal achievements. - BadAsh71, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6You can watch YouTube at work?

in fact, usually most of the video are free to look. - chroko, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2That's what I thought too. But from glancing at the article, they are wrong to use the term "streaming" in that context.
> The package from Beijing will include highlights, news and daily clips of the competitions
So no, it isn't a live video stream. They're just distributing prerecorded clips, as always. - mister711, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2What about NBC streaming? Why would those of us in the US go to youtube through some proxy, when we have NBC streaming?
- hellride66, on 08/04/2008, -1/+2they can change the name now to WeTube
