US Olympic Speedskating to be Sponsored by Stephen Colbert

sportsillustrated.cnn.com — On Monday's "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert announced his show has become the primary sponsor of the U.S. Speedskating team. The team's largest annual cash sponsor, DSB Bank NV, left the team in the lurch after it declared bankruptcy in October. The name "Colbert Nation" will be emblazoned on the team's uniforms.

In the past, Colbert has had a great deal of success raising money this way. He has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity that assists injured service members and their families.

    The Dutch bank DSB was to pay $300,000 for the sponsorship but failed to make any payments. That put U.S. Speedskating in a difficult position with little time to court new sponsors before the games begin in February."
  • Paradiddler45, on 11/03/2009, -0/+20It's not as lame as you might think. The problem is you can never perceive how fast the skaters are moving on TV because the cameras zoom out as the skaters approach. It makes it very boring unless you're in person.

  • Joest23, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7That'll be pretty cool to see that in February at Vancouver. I never knew speed skating brought in that many medals. What I don't get is if people are so concerned about winning the most medals, you'd expect them to pay attention to sports like speed skating which have the potential to bring in many medals rather than something that only brings in one or two.

  • thesandbender, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I just donated... and the donations are done through the US Speed Skating site and the money is going to them. So at the very least they'll get some money. However, given the Colbert can pull 1-2m "friends" on Facebook, MySpace, etc. I don't think that $300k is going to be a problem.

    Also... the guy is a class act in real life. If for some reason it did fall short I think he'd probably pony up the difference.
