- charm803, on 07/24/2008, -1/+14"Born prematurely, Rudolph suffered scarlet fever, double pneumonia and eventually polio as a child, which forced her into metal leg braces at age 6. Fourteen years later, she won both the 100 and 200-meters at the 1960 Olympics to become the first American woman to win three gold medals at one Olympics."
Compared to her, we are a bunch of whiners.

In Australia, Landy is perhaps most famously remembered for his performance in the 1500 metres final at the 1956 Australian National Championships prior to the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games. In the race, Landy stopped and doubled backed to check on fellow runner Ron Clarke after another runner clipped Clarke's heel, causing him to fall early in the third lap of the race. Clarke, the then-junior 1500 m world champion, who had been leading the race, got back to his feet and started running again; Landy followed. Incredibly, in the final two laps Landy made up a large deficit to win the race, something considered one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history. Said the National Centre for History and Education in Australia, "It was a spontaneous gesture of sportsmanship and it has never been forgotten - inactive, on 07/24/2008, -2/+6Jesse Owens?

- ostracize, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2You're thinking of Carl Lewis.
(And we all miss the news, but Huey Lewis needs time to create. Until then we just have to be patient) - BigBadaboom, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Steve Prefontaine may have been an inspiration figure to many, but it is not really an inspirational Olympic story. He finished fourth in his only Olympic appearance.
- reddikilowatt, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Why does everyone competing in the Olympics have to go through some horrid childhood? Can't we just watch them compete without the tear-jerker backstory?
(Cue sappy, heart-tugging solo piano music)
"But being born was just the beginning of Bob's problems. Later doctors told his mother that he'd never be able to eat solid food or dress himself for at least 2 years. The strain was just too much for his father, a trial lawyer who never had time to play ball with young Robert (or Bobby, as he liked to be called), who later left his mother to raise the sickly child herself, with only her real estate license and child support to get by." - kitkatsavvy, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1ummm...so where do you click to read the stories?? ive got no idea

http://comsoft.org - oldman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Agreed, though I think the media really overplays this aspect, probably a good portion of people have at least 1 inspirational story from their life.
There are worse things than telling these stories though. - arjie, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I came here to say exactly that, but the latter part of his life wasn't exactly inspirational.
