- polalion, on 08/26/2008, -9/+59...So why do all of them involve the US?
Oh ***** I forgot. Digg. What was I thinking. - DeFex, on 08/26/2008, -2/+41upsets in US Olympic history.
- Kinneas12, on 08/26/2008, -3/+22It's because when the idiot who submitted this read about 5 American upsets, he thinks the world consists of the U.S. and the "other guys".
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -3/+16I think there are more than a few non-US upsets that would beat half of these off this list, if it were a serious list of course.
- whazdown, on 08/26/2008, -0/+13Even though all these ''upsets'' are US-based, it still forgets to mention Jesse Owens pissing all over the aryan race myth. Brilliant.
I think GB beating the US in the 4x100 in Athens has to be up there, even if it was by a whisker - no one expected the US to lose that, especially with 4 fantastic runners in Gatlin, Crawford, Miller then Greene. - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -2/+14http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g255/laocee/kart ...
- chaseacej, on 08/26/2008, -4/+14Do you believe in miracles?..........YES!!!
- thegamingguy, on 08/26/2008, -1/+10The basketball game in 1972 is clearly the biggest but "awarding" it as such is probably not as legit. The game was over and the upset didn't happen. But then, time was added and the rest is history. So I hate to call that an upset rather than a flat out robbery. List was pretty much on the mark though. I'd like to nominate Nastia getting a silver medal although she had the same score as the gold medal winner, the judges hosed her. Maybe that is more of a robbery than an upset though.
- GravyTrain6, on 08/26/2008, -0/+6you do realize that he did what was expected...in fact, because of that, I felt sorry for him, if he would have only won 7 of those gold medals, it would have been considered a failure.
- IAmSam14, on 08/26/2008, -0/+5At least put quotes around it or something if your just gonna steal it right out of wikipedia
- rifaco, on 08/26/2008, -2/+7Rulon Gardner:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rulon_Gardner#Wrestli ... - merripen, on 08/26/2008, -2/+7Um, Jesse Owens?
- GravyTrain6, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4no
- BOFH2, on 08/26/2008, -3/+6Since this seems to be a US only thing, I think this upset is quite worthy:
Gardner is most well known for his defeat of Alexander Karelin (Aleksandr) in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Karelin had been undefeated for thirteen years, and had not given up a point in six years, prior to his loss in the gold medal match to Gardner - ihavebeenseen, on 08/26/2008, -4/+7They have the most people they should have the most gold medals. If you did a people / medal then US gets em. However Jamaica smokes the US using that methodology.
- ghank, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3Only 'Merica is important on teh Internetz.
- punkaybbolt, on 08/26/2008, -2/+5First off, you need to chill out life036. I wonder what it is you do that is so special. Taking a sport such as gymnastics and simplifying it to simply "flipping around on bars" shows that you don't have a deep understand of the concept of sport. There is much more to it than that. To me the idea of sport is the unity of competition, personal achievement and a good time. All of which seem to escape you.
It seems like the idea of patriotism escapes you as well and I don't meet the "I love my government"patriotism. I mean the type of patriotism that inspires our small part of the global community to succeed in positive things such as the idea of sport.
I'm not speaking for blairslovechild (weird name), but I "GIVE A *****!" because its fun, and can be a very positive and rewarding experience to cheer on your countryman. - sgtbutterscotch, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3That's not violating the rules. That actually playing to the rules.
- msmayhew, on 08/26/2008, -2/+5Why does it bother you so much that I do give a *****?
- loopyloopy, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2i think the Australian guy who beat the Chinese in the 10m diving in 2008 was a pretty big upset
- DarkCanuck12, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2HOLY CRAP! It's all US!
- brycelb, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2That 72' game is one of the most ridiculous things to happen in Olympic history. I agree, I don't think of it as an upset since the US clearly won the game. for those that don't know the history it's actually pretty interesting and worth the time to find out.
- Iceman3000, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2It Just Goes Too Show That When Anyone Refers To Olympic History In America. They Really Mean "Just Olympic History In America". No Need Too Add In Other Countries Upsets Or Anything Kool Like That.
- timpoke8, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2If you're going to argue a position that is clearly unpopular, you should at least get your facts straight. The Soviets got three chances.
- life036, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Also, *****.
- life036, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Straight up ***** with nothing to offer to the debate but insults. I'll play.
So EatingPaste, how much sperm do you have in your *****? - Lazn0r, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1You're just jealous that China is more awesome that you are
- tk0680, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Fun fact: .com does not imply "American". I honestly bet you didn't know that.
- ihavebeenseen, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Oui Oui
- jk_baller23, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1I still feel bad that the US lost in softball. They dominated the entire time since softball became part of the Olympics and then lose the final Olympic game for most, if not all of the players, and now they won't be able to compete again until the minimum of 2016.
- arensquared, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1When USA Lost to Greece, and didn't get the Gold...
- 808ethan, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1Hey, you find me a country with major cities in tropical regions that will let me work and live there, and I'll go. Until then, everyone can stop bitching about where i live.
- brycelb, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1Nope were taking about upsets. And maybe AI should have been practicing some more when he was there.
- Lazn0r, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1I think that black guy, Jessy Owens or some such, should have been in there
- BOFH2, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1sorry. I forgot. Please forgive me. I truly did not mean to do that.
- loopyloopy, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1thats like saying Google is only for Americans
anyway the article wasnt created by Digg - life036, on 08/26/2008, -1/+2It bothers me so much because I don't understand the reasons why you give a *****, and I have a feeling that most people don't know why they do.
Don't get me wrong, sports are great. I've been addicted to basketball my whole life and the emotions and camaraderie you feel out there on court are priceless. But it just gets underneath my skin to no end to see all you bandwagon fans get excited about this ***** once every four years. I would understand if you followed the sport consistently, but you don't.
You're just being convinced by NBC that you're interested, when you never gave a ***** before you saw all the commercials and ***** coverage. - sixgun, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1I'd would say naustia's situation was more of a robbery. The tie breaker wasn't so much the issue, cause the tie shouldn't have been there to begin with. Naustia had only 2 small errors, worth about a .1 deduction on the uneven bars, and stuck the dismount. He Kexin had a major error that should have been a .3 to .5 deduction, plus a cross step on the dismount(another .1).
- timpoke8, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1So that team doesn't pass it to Jackson.
- SevenTwo, on 08/26/2008, -1/+1What Are We Talking About? Practice?
- TuckWat, on 08/26/2008, -4/+4USA had 110 total medals and China had 100 total medals this year. Then again, medal counts or gold medal counts don't mean much anyways.
For example, Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals. The USA basketball (mens and women) both won gold but this only counts as 2 gold medals. - logosx1, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0The 1972 basketball game was indeed a farce. The head of the International Basketball Federation interfered in the refereeing -- which he was not allowed to do -- to reset the clock and take the U.S. down a peg. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._William_Jones.
Veterans of the U.S. team have refused to accept the silver to this day, and they are absolutely correct to do so. - GreekMooMan, on 08/26/2008, -1/+1Why is it that everyone and their mamma feels the need to point out these are all US based Olympic upsets?
Am I wrong in thinking that Digg.com is a US site? Am I wrong in thinking that the vast majority of readers on Digg.com are Americans? - brainflakes, on 08/26/2008, -0/+0old people were sent off to camps for "re-education" when they APPLIED TO protest IN THE DESIGNATED PROTEST AREA at their villages being flattened
There fixed it for you - EatingPaste, on 08/26/2008, -1/+1So life036 how much sand do you have in your vagina?
