- jimboredford, on 10/18/2009, -3/+109If I learned anything from playing years of GTA, it's that no matter how many police helicopters you shoot down there is always another one on the way. He would have been better off just repainting his car.
- zoomaKabu, on 10/18/2009, -1/+922 weeks after, 2 weeks before, on the day of, Rio always has "severe" violence.
- fingerrockets4, on 10/18/2009, -1/+63"killed at least 12 people, injured six and saw a police helicopter shot down and eight buses set on fire Saturday"
is this viral marketing for GTA Rio? - Ghostwo, on 10/18/2009, -18/+69Criminal or not, shooting down a helicopter is *****' badass.
- inactive, on 10/18/2009, -3/+54And everyone said Chicago was violent. Ok, it is.
- lurrch1, on 10/18/2009, -3/+48Did the IOC even visit Rio for more than 5 minutes?
- oldhick, on 10/18/2009, -6/+45Yeah, I'm sure the family of the pilot agrees. Death is real badass.
- ajm220, on 10/18/2009, -2/+40# of helicopters downed in police violence in Chicago: 0.
# "" in Rio de Janeiro: 1.
It seems Rio beats us in everything...... - had3l, on 10/18/2009, -1/+30I live in Rio. It would be a great place to live if only there was less crime.
I hope to move to somewhere like Canada or Australia as soon as I finish my Bachelor's degree. - Kicksilver, on 10/18/2009, -2/+26I live in Rio, actually I lived here all my life, and this is quite commom over here. Setting buses on fire and civil war. But this only happens in the poor neighbourhoods up in the north of Rio. The south zone, where the beauty and wealthy is located at (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon), there's nothing like this. The games are gonna be played at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Marina da Glória, Barra da Tijuca, all of them high-medium-class neighbourhoods, and the army's gonna play a big role in the security, so that the tourists can enjoy the games flawlessly. After the games end, the army will be gone too, and we will be back in hell, once again!
- askantik, on 10/18/2009, -4/+26Why is everyone so critical of Rio being chosen for the Olypmics? You think Beijing had no problems? They ***** built walls to hide the slums and poor people. That in and of itself is pretty ***** up, IMO. Not to mention the perpetual pwnage of Tibet and Taiwan...
- defsyfe, on 10/18/2009, -4/+26Chicago is no more or less violent than any other major American city.
- egenesis, on 10/18/2009, -3/+24OPENING CEREMONY already?
- had3l, on 10/18/2009, -1/+21This page is a 403, forbidden page

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZInQrG_YnA - had3l, on 10/18/2009, -3/+22It won't. They will just put the country's entire army out on every corner if they have to.
The stakes are too high for Brazil. - askantik, on 10/18/2009, -2/+19Wait, you mean it's not like shooting down a chopper in Call of Duty 4?
- Shadoblak, on 10/18/2009, -1/+18You're excited to see violence and murder?
- had3l, on 10/18/2009, -2/+17The drug war is a huge part of it.
However, in the case of Rio, poverty plays an even bigger part. If they weren't trafficking, they would probably be robbing banks or kidnapping, etc. They don't really have a better option. Watch City of God if you didn't, it's great. - soccerman90, on 10/18/2009, -1/+15maybe they can light the olympic torch with a molatov cocktail
- geoman2k, on 10/18/2009, -0/+13Only certain parts of Chicago are violent. If you know the areas to stay away from it is a very safe city.
- had3l, on 10/18/2009, -2/+15Well, shooting at helicopters is the national pastime.
- had3l, on 10/18/2009, -2/+14Not like there are any jobs here either.
And my grandparents were Canadian, so in a way I'd be returning home. - wejmahtin, on 10/18/2009, -2/+13One favela ( think ghetto, with makeshift housing, pirated electricity, and complete with a pirate radio station ) in Rio has over 300 thousand residents. I know a couple who lived on a boat near it saw 3 bodies in the water over the course of about a year and a half. I'm more surprised that a helicopter would risk flying over it than I would be surprised if one got gunned down every two weeks.
- gankige, on 10/18/2009, -9/+20I'm excited to see stuff like this going down DURING the olympics, and everyone's reactions.
- oldhick, on 10/18/2009, -2/+13@Ghostwo, maybe for you. Others might like to live a full life.
- iloopy, on 10/18/2009, -11/+19Thank goodness the Olympics are not in Chicago. I suppose that Fox News will tout this as an added entertainment benefit for having the games in Rio...
- TheJimid, on 10/18/2009, -4/+12And of coarse, nobody is going to blame the drug war but Digg and a handful of non-profits.
- Daniel591992, on 10/18/2009, -1/+9It's not going to. I was there during the Pan American games and the amount of cops was incredible. Needless to say, the violence returned to normal after the games.
- Daniel591992, on 10/18/2009, -2/+10I mean, who HASN'T done that in GTA?
- TheJimid, on 10/18/2009, -2/+94 for the first one.
- BeesKnees21, on 10/18/2009, -1/+8Sure come to Canada. We always accept working educated people. Don't listen to FormerBabby. And actually we do have lots of jobs at least where I live in Saskatchewan. We have a huge mining sector for potash, diamonds, uranium, coal, etc. This brings in lots of IT professionals, Engineers of almost all disciplines, financial people, etc. So I guess it depends on what you exactly do. The Engineering Firm that I work at is actually hiring people right now for excellent wages and benefits.
- KungFooJesus, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7Indeed, there is a reason why the games haven't been hosted there yet. Good idea, poor execution.
- inactive, on 10/18/2009, -0/+6care to not be a douche? chicago doesn't have drug traffickers shooting down ***** helicopters
- had3l, on 10/18/2009, -2/+8Hmm, actually, that happened RIGHT between the two biggest stadiums, Maracanã and Engenhão.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-22.904799, ...
The stadium on the lower right is Maracanã, the green area near the middle is "Morro dos Macacos" where the violence happened. Engenhão is on the top left of that map. - inactive, on 10/18/2009, -2/+8It took 2 weeks?
- KungFooJesus, on 10/18/2009, -0/+6As stated, Beijing wasn't a good choice either. There were a lot of complaints about that one as well.
They are trying to give the games to people who've never hosted before it seems. Like white guilt or something, while pacifying the major players by gifting one to London. Bookmark this reply. In four years they will give the games to a major western power as placation. - Ferretman, on 10/18/2009, -5/+11Wow...great choice IOC....
- Solkre, on 10/18/2009, -2/+7How many stars do you get for downing a police heli?
- doomestic, on 10/18/2009, -1/+6I thought the mother country of Nazis was Germany. I knew those history books were lying to us all along!
- randyzaia, on 10/18/2009, -4/+8Hey let's have the Olympics in a Third-World, violence-ridden city!
- chikuten, on 10/18/2009, -1/+5Beijing wasn't a good choice either.
- jts10, on 10/18/2009, -2/+6the pilot lived... was shot in the leg though
however 2 others did die in the helicopter - DLun203, on 10/18/2009, -0/+3Imagine if they canceled the Rio Olympics on the grounds that it's basically a real life "Grand Theft Auto" game.

Well, no, it started in the UK. - Thewhitedeath, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3I toured this Favela last December. It's called ' Rocinha'. One of the most amazing experiences in my life. A three hour walking tour. All touristy and interesting for the first two hours until the four of us walked into an alley lined with gunmen. I had to walk through about 40 highly armed gunmen all the while hoping I wouldn't get shot. It was really bizarre. So outside my "normal" everyday life I wasn't even scared. More exhilarated than anything. After we passed them I asked our guide if there is any police presence in the favela. I had no idea that the gunmen had started following us and heard me talk about the police. He stopped us and asked the guide in portuguese why I was talking about the police. She explained that we were tourists and just asking questions, and they let us go. I couldn't get out of that favela fast enough. The guide told us that they rarely see the drug gangs the way we did and that the drug lord must have been close by, thus all the protection. Scary ***** now that I look back on it.
- crichton101, on 10/18/2009, -1/+4no one was blaming their problems on Fox. Had Fox News commentators not been giddy over Chicago losing out on the vote to host the Olympics so they could attack Obama over it, there really wouldn't be any comments about the Olympics and Fox News. But they did, so now they have opened themselves up as fair game to be ridiculed for it. You say something stupid, or act like unpatriotic dick just cause the president is a black democrat, then you kind of bring upon yourself.
And no, it won't force Rio to anything that actually helps its country or it's citizens. yes, they will get rid of the slums, they will do this by forcing all the people living in them to move some where else, and then tear down all the slums. They will build stadiums, roads, and dorms/hotels/motels that yes, will create some great temporary jobs. And during the Olympics, they will hire extra cops, many of whom will be members of gangs, and being cops/military will give them access to more guns and ways to shake people down, or get a man inside the law enforcement as a spy. And then, when the Olympics are over, the crime elements and shanty towns will return because poor people need a place to live, and the gangs will continue their violence once again as freely as they did before. - Rudegar, on 10/18/2009, -2/+5nothing beats waiting for paint to dry!
- sfasu77, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3Come to Texas, where we can annoy the ***** out of you by thinking your Mexican...
- 13373h4X0r, on 10/18/2009, -0/+3Blame it on Rio!
Let the games BEGIN!!! - JMAmado, on 10/18/2009, -2/+5In other news, Olympic officials have informed us that in the 2016 games skeet shooting competition, the traditional disk shaped skeet targets will be replaced by remote controlled helicopters.
