- Retrospekt, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24Being a swimmer myself, the respect I have for Phelps is very high. Not many people understand what kind of training and the kind of stamina one must build up to even finish one of those races, let alone get a time like that.
I forgot the exact statistic, but swimming 1 mile is equivalent to 5 or so running miles. (Might be 4) - Rahodeb, on 07/05/2008, -1/+17Big deal. Sprinting has the same kind of tech. Check out articles on the new nike shoes and outfits for US olympians that are lighter weight and reduce drag. I'm sure they didn't have advanced polymers for pole vaulting in the original olympics. And what about cycling, or skiing, or ski jumping, or... you get the picture
We're a far cry from the original "fig leaf" olympics. Nearly every sport has benefitted from tech advancements. It's just part of the game. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+14He's not dead.
- forceuser, on 07/05/2008, -2/+16In before Fred Phelps
- thekms, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13He also set the world record for the 400IM a few days ago at the trials. He'll soon be stripped of all of his records once officials discover his fins and gills.
- jellydoughnut21, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10That really is insane. Swimming is so incredibly difficult to the average joe with no training. To be that good in so many different strokes is hard to fathom for me. You guys should all go to an olympic sized pool and see how many laps you can do before you sink, it's far more difficult that most people realize.
- arichard, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9And he's a diver.
- elcaminos, on 07/05/2008, -2/+11God hates swimmers!
- slomotion, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6The difference is that buying a fancy suit won't make you a better swimmer. But yeah I remember in the 2000 games when the new Fastskin suits just came out Alexander Popov shows up in a plain old speedo and rocked everyone's *****. What a badass.
- rootsm3, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6Hot damn. Go Mikey.
- SIRBERUS, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4While I wouldn't mind if they have another version of swimming where people had to swim in the bare-minimums so no one had an advantage... I don't see anything wrong with people using the new suits.
I mean, why yes the new suits are a great piece of technology, they only account for a fraction of the overall equation. What about how some countries have better trainers than other countries? What about the various pool technologies we have now adays (i.e. waveless pools)? What about the slimline goggles, the swim caps, the dieting and work out regime?
I don't know... I think that people are giving the suits *too* much credit sometimes. - Retrospekt, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4That's impossible. 1 minute and 55.4 seconds.
- nedzeve, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Omaha '08: Corn you can swim in
- peevegrider, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4I thought the headline was referring to Fred Phelps and baptism gone haywire...
- gak001, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4As a swimmer for 11 years and a coach for 2, I have to disagree with you. As technology improves, sports evolve. No one complained when the NHL streamlined and modernized their outdated uniforms. The NFL is talking about putting headsets in Defensive helmets.
The problem with being a purist is where do you draw the line? If you want to be absolutely originalist, then we should all be swimming in a rivers, naked, for prize money. I figure as long as the athlete isn't being mechanically assisted (ie an out board motor or some type of propulsion) then it's completely legitimate. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3OK, then I stand corrected. I'm worried that he might be peaking too early and might disappoint during the Olympics.
- JonathanB, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Agreed. He has some serious talent. Ryan Lochte doesn't get nearly as much credit as he deserves, they are both the best in the world by large margins. Just wait until Beijing, you will be amazed. He's not even fully rested for this meet.

- Brew, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4I know people are going to raise issue with this, but I use to swim in Maryland and Phelps is an amazing swimmer, but he is an incredible douche bag. I know people that know him and have met him; even before he was famous. He just is a cocky dick I hear. But then again, I guess I would be one too if I were the fastest swimmer in the history of the world.
- Iztikeit, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3That's so incredibly fast. It's amazing that a swimmer gets this much attention, but he actually deserves it. He's like a dolphin or something.
- tubbsthezombie, on 07/05/2008, -2/+5Actually, no. I live in Omaha.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3He swam fast because he saw a rainbow colored shark fin behind him.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+4So Joey Chestnut beat a Japanese guy for the second consecutive year at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest and you don't see that on digg.
- iammzac, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2He goes to U of M.. of course he's cocky.
- ifire, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2My 200IM was like 2 min 50 secs or something... Phelps is absurd.
- thekms, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2I swim Varsity and I can tell you that an average 2 hour practice for us is about 5,000 yards. Pushing 6,000 in that time frame makes it rough.
Nevertheless, Phelps will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greatest athletes of our lifetimes. - nedzeve, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Correction: God hates FAG swimmers. Your country is doomed!
- jimmiss, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1The best I was ever able to do when I was a lifeguard was 525m @ 11min. We had to be able to do that to get the job. Competitively I could do that 50m in 36 backstroke. I sure wish I could do that now.
- JonathanB, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Phelps broke his world record in the 200 free. Only thing left standing is the 400 free, which two americans are within seconds of breaking. He retired because he knew phelps would absolutely rape him.
- WhoRadley, on 07/05/2008, -5/+6USA!, USA!, USA!
- Greengoo, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I'll second this... my girlfriend has friends she swims with who swam with him. Amazing swimmer... horrid human being.
- Rahodeb, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2...And he 'aint nea'er seen no cement ponds in Omaha.
- Iztikeit, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1200 meters in 55.4 seconds.....That's just insane, isn't it? I could pull that off in about 5 minutes.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Is it sad that I thought they were talking about Fred Phelps before I had click in?
- peevegrider, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1That was awesome...
- halfdirt, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1And when he wears his new speedo suit you can see his cocky dick

I haven't been on digg for a while, so I hope you'll forgive me, but I needed to raise a point.
What should we do with all of the records that were broken with the introduction of goggles, the flip turn, and improvements to stroke technique? The advent of the flip turn resulted in basically all the old records being broken... same thing with goggles. To reiterate my point, where do we draw the line? - bieber, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Ehh, I think you're over grandizing it a little. There are only four strokes in competitive swimming, and unless you're racing IM like Phelps here, you don't need to be great at all four of them. Once you get your technique down, it's more than anything a matter of training for strength and endurance, not unlike running, speed skating, or any other type of racing event. You want incredibly difficult, take a look at the Degree of Difficulty tables for diving sometime...for any given diving event (and there are two per gender in the olympics), there are dozens of combinations of approaches, positions, somersaults and twists. And while you can muscle your way through a longer swimming event, if you just decide to go up and try to add some somersaults and twists to a dive out of the blue, you're more or less guaranteed to hurt yourself: each new dive takes learning and concentration.
Of course, as a swimmer turned diver, I might be a little bit biased ;) - burchie2, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1that's the exact problem though. WATER SHOULDN'T CHANGE, IT'S ***** WATER. THERE IS NO TECH. IT'S ***** WATER.
- curiousgrge, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1While I don't have a problem with the suits since everyone uses it now and it levels out the playing field, but I do have a problem with the records that are being broken when the playing field isn't the same.
The examples you cite are team sports (you can argue swimming has team events) but when it comes to individual records that are being broken time and time again but not under the same conditions where original records stand, then you can argue there is an asterisk there.
You don't have any world records for hockey nor football.
I'm sure Phelps would still have world records regardless but would the results be as good if he wore a suit? - Iztikeit, on 07/06/2008, -0/+0Oh, he just wrote it extremely strange. Thought it sounded a little odd.
- tubbsthezombie, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Here in Omaha, we ride cows to work, on dirt roads, we don't have no cable, or fancy tee-vee box. To post on Digg, I have to take to giant lightning rods and click them together during the height of a dust/electricity storm, while dancing the hustle (which is the most popular and controversial dance around these parts). We wear burlap sacks for shoes, and roll our own cigarettes from corn husks.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3GOD HATES WATER!
- shagg187, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Am I the only one who read the title as "Phelps helps breaks world swimming record"?
- Retrospekt, on 07/06/2008, -2/+1The most our varsity practices consist of is 14,000 in a 3.5 hours time frame. My coach is mad.
- Coven, on 07/05/2008, -4/+3fail
- lido, on 07/05/2008, -4/+3Ignorance runs thick in your family, doesn't it?
- curiousgrge, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0Did you say peaking or puking? After 64 hot dogs, you'd think the latter.
