- edstate, on 08/20/2008, -10/+104Today? ...the kids a citizen, isn't he? So why call him "one of our own TODAY"?
Look. As much as myself, and many others, think jus soli has been misinterpreted here in the US for political gain, until the Suprermes address the issue it is what it is. And he's a citizen. ...So don't act like that only now, after he's won gold, is he acceptable. - jun2san, on 08/20/2008, -17/+96So Undocumented Immigrant is the PC way of saying illegal immigrant?
- tzustrategy, on 08/20/2008, -5/+49When we don't want the person, they're an "illegal" immigrant. When we don't want the person but their offspring does something for America, they're softened to being "undocumented."
gg semantics. - Hetman, on 08/20/2008, -32/+76Well the kid can stay, the father needs to go back to wherever he is from and get a visa and citizenship legally.
- CosmicJustice, on 08/20/2008, -3/+44Not exactly. People with the drive to get off their ass and come to the US have the drive to do well once they get here.
- kontraire, on 08/20/2008, -4/+44Immigrants have always made this country stronger, and they still are today.
- walbold, on 08/20/2008, -6/+42unbelievable. he must have made his family so proud.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -6/+38Yes, it's the PC way of saying it. Illegal must be too accurate for some people.
- george@CASE, on 08/20/2008, -4/+36he was probably born in the US, so he's an american citizen.
- brjohnson789, on 08/20/2008, -10/+36We should have amnesty for all gold medal winners and their families. Silver = just immediate families. Bronze = just the athlete.
- Hetman, on 08/20/2008, -11/+34Nope because comming to America illegally is just what it states illegal. Every other modern country enforces their immigration laws and no one complains. There is no such thing as anchor babies in almost every other 1st world country. Try immigrating to the U.K. and just see how difficult it is.
- newstart, on 08/20/2008, -33/+55It is something about America that makes people who come here from all over the world reach their highest potential. I Love America!
- somberlaine, on 08/20/2008, -9/+31take that Lou Dobbs.
- Claudia21184, on 08/20/2008, -2/+23This is a great story, because it is not rare. Immigrants come here to work and they work very hard.
- Nezacant, on 08/20/2008, -15/+35Dem damn imimgrants comes into are country, breedin are air, eetin are food, and winnin are gold medals. Dats why we needs to build us a big ol' fence!
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -3/+19dey tok hour mederls!
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -13/+28seriously. someone who swam across a river and crossed a desert seems more deserving than someone who came out of a vagina in nebraska.
- Iztikeit, on 08/20/2008, -4/+19The point is, America gives one access to succeed. America gets a bad rap for lots of things but it isn't a crime to compliment the place when it deserves it.
- dagnabbit, on 08/20/2008, -2/+17Did anybody see the American female hurdler last night? They talked about her story of being an orphan and moving around and stuff...so she's way out in front and then clips a hurdle, losing the race. The look on her face afterward was about enough to make you sick just watching. Sad.
- conmulligan, on 08/20/2008, -3/+17I'm pretty sure a story like this could happen anywhere in the World, America doesn't own immigration. Still, kudos to Henry Cejudo.
- heretik, on 08/20/2008, -3/+17I'm so tired of this "only in America" *****! Maybe in 1890 it was true but today anyone in any Western country can come from nothing and achieve greatness. The only "only in America" part of the story is in the rest of the west he would have grown up with health care, safe streets and a decent education.
- VigRoco, on 08/20/2008, -1/+14Buried for the blasted misleading title.
And for the record, illegal immigration is a huge problem, I mean the last illegal immigrants to America took over the whole nation! - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -6/+18...and it's impossible to reach your highest potential anywhere else in the world right? ONLY in America.
I think it should be mandatory that Americans live for at least 2 years in another country so that they can get outside the bubble and see what the rest of the world is really like first hand. It's great to love your country but it's just idiotic to suggest that America is the only place where people are able to be free and happy.
You know what... people immigrate to other Countries as well. Canada, Great Britain, Australia...I could go on and on. People immigrating to any country do so seeking to better their lives. America is NOT the only place in the world they can do that and frankly as an American it's embarrassing when asshats from here shout ***** like this into an international forum. Is it any wonder we have a reputation for being loud, arrogant and obnoxious?
Sorry for the rant but talk like that pisses me off... - Leering1, on 08/20/2008, -3/+14Only in America this is an issue.
- pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -12/+23i wasn't aware the europeans got proper documentation from the native americans when they came. btw, the UK was not founded as a nation of immigrants. despite what you may believe, god didn't create america for white christian men.
- VeritasAequitas, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11Ah yes let's bring up the sins of the past to make ourselves righteous in our speech now. I could care less if people come here. I just think they should have to pay taxes to enjoy the services they are partaking in. Therefore, if they are illegal they either start paying taxes, including back taxes or they leave.
- Hetman, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10I am native american. And you are right about the land. But here is the thing it is not like we were the peacful native americans that disney paints. We had wars with revil tribes there were many bad things we did to each other. And the only reason we did not care about land is because it was abundant and we had so few people. But I can tell you indians were greedy just like every other human. Not all of them of course but they were.
- elnerdo, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9This is a stupid article all-in-all. The SON of an undocumented immigrant isn't an undocumented immigrant himself. If you're born here, then you're a citizen.
- Superflks, on 08/20/2008, -9/+17I don't like you.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8Ata boy. For a second there, I thought Digg was going soft.
- edstate, on 08/20/2008, -4/+11Generalize blatantly much?
- graeh, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10Only in America?
There's lots of other nice countries in the world people sneak into...
Like Australia, where I live. - EarlOfLade, on 08/20/2008, -4/+11Unfortunately, all statistics shows that the "American Dream" is just that, a dream.
- hobbers, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Wow, this was so awesome ...
"Rico does not like flying, so she watched her son’s Olympic performances on a laptop in Colorado Springs. She vomited three times — one for each period her son lost in the three matches leading to the finals."
Plodding along in a feel-good story about winning olympic gold and they have to inject some vomiting into the situation. Awesome. - shauncorleone, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Yes. Just last week I was pulled over for DWLSR, and I informed the officer that I was simply driving undocumented.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8"get benefits that most US citizens can't get"
I laughed. - nastri83, on 08/20/2008, -12/+18"Undocumented immigrant"? Is that like an ILLEGAL immigrant? Like one of those people that break laws and in turn get benefits that most US citizens can't get? Is it one of those people that are getting benefits from taxes that LEGAL citizens pay?
- Airforcefalco, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Winners have to use their medals to pay off some of the national debt.
- isunktheship, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8MakiMaki, the submitter just put a huge spin on the article..
"today we call him our own" is NOT FROM THE ARTICLE, but it's his own comment. RTFA! - Temo1, on 08/20/2008, -5/+11Hey thanks for adding the true yet misleading title to your digg submission to generate more publicity, MakiMaki. That's really kind of you.
The winner wasn't an illegal immigrant. His mother was.
The actual article headline: "U.S. Wrestler Completes a Journey From Poverty" - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -2/+7Iztikeit I thought I was clear but just to clarify. I think it's great to love where you're from. I love America, that's why I live here. What I can't stand is the assumption that where you're from is superior to everywhere else. In this case the notion that a person has to come to America to reach their highest potential. The idea that this guy won the medal BECAUSE he was in America is ridiculous. If he happened to be from Canada he'd still have won... or anywhere else for that matter.
It is a well known and well documented fact that a large majority of Americans genuinely believe that America is superior to the rest of the world in terms of freedom and opportunity. This is completely false and it's a lie (and in many cases the complete opposite is true) that keeps getting perpetuated generation after generation by our school system, the media and people who just don't know any better because they've spent their entire lives living within its borders and will believe anything they're told.
So feel free to say I love America but the second you imply that America is superior to anywhere else that's where I have a problem. - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6That title is *****. This could have happened anywhere in the world. Success is not limited to America.
- msaleem, on 08/20/2008, -6/+11Only in America, son of an undocumented immigrant wants to get paid $5/hour to clean your ***** and gets shot in the face instead.
- preban, on 08/20/2008, -12/+17Instead of "undocumented" I'm gonna start calling them "unlegal" or "undeported". This medal business has nothing to do with the fact that his father is here illegally.
- sindex, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5No, because we'll want to keep those icons after Texas secedes into its own awesome country of armed armadillos and snakes.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -16/+21Foreigners with PhDs and money and stuff increasingly move to Canada and Europe and other places with sensible immigration policies in place. America's motto is "give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses," and that's exactly what we get. Republicans who hate foreigners are working hard to ensure that this remains the case by blocking every attempt to institute meaningful immigration reform. They suspect anyone with a dusky complexion who has a PhD in the physical sciences of being part of an Al Qaeda plot to blow up the Piggly Wiggly in Tuscaloosa or something.
- raybury, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Not if you're Jeb Bush.
- Hetman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Try to get legal documentation in Australia and Canada. It takes forever. And it is complicated with lots of paper work. And you usually actually have to have a skill to get into those countries. America is the easiest country to migrate to legally. If you do not believe me just google Australia/Canada immigration.
- theodenking, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6Woah there Captain Patriotism. I'm pretty sure we could manage a story like this in Britain too.
- Elephant789, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6Why only in America?
