- txcrew, on 09/30/2009, -2/+13I find it funny as a Chicagoan that the Olympics are going to be held on land that used to hold an airport that the mayor destroyed overnight without anyone's consent.
- noahgelman, on 10/01/2009, -1/+11I think the next Olympics should be somewhere in South America. It's the only continent (besides Antarctica) that hasn't hosted it and I'm not sure why.
- Gibletoid, on 10/01/2009, -5/+14Dear Chicago,
We are sick of the Olympics, and they haven't even taken place yet. You can have them.
Yours Truly,
Vancouver - ricker2005, on 10/01/2009, -3/+11It's not like Rio is doing better. It's actually got about double the homocides per capita.
- martyFREEDOM, on 10/01/2009, -0/+8Dear Vancouver,
We would rather you take them, work is going to be horrible for those weeks.
Sincerely,
Chicago - RuffRidr, on 09/30/2009, -9/+15With Chicago's violent crime rate, it would be insane to award the Olympics to them. Clean up your city (and I don't mean feel good measures like Daley's useless war on gun owners) and come back in ten years.
- wolfing, on 10/01/2009, -0/+4I'd rather the brazilians do it. We've done it many times, let other people have their chance.
- zacharytelschow, on 10/01/2009, -5/+9High taxes, political corruption, violent crime, strong unions that will demand a pretty penny for their labor on Olympic venues, and a transportation system that at present couldn't handle the increased traffic, not to mention a lack of enthusiasm among locals for hosting the games (for all the reasons enumerated previously). Yes, Chicago has it all.
- Pxtl, on 10/01/2009, -1/+4Rio has it in the bag. Everybody wants to see an Olympics in South America for the first time.
- aussiejan, on 10/02/2009, -0/+3Australia (also in the southern hemisphere) held the 2000 summer Olympics in September, which is spring for us but was still technically summer for the northern hemisphere. The bonus was the athletes were spared the insane heat here in the middle of summer.
I agree with noahgelman. Rio should get it. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -3/+6Have you actually looked at the crime rate in Chicago? Or do you just believe everything you see on TV?
Chicago's crime rate has been on the decline for quite a while. Yes, there are bad areas, but this is true with any major city. You can be against Chicago getting the Olympics, but please get your facts straight.
Just an example:
http://www.infoplease.com/us/cities/safest-dangero ... - Pxtl, on 10/01/2009, -1/+4Well, the Southern hemisphere is tricky, since the North American summer months are the dead of winter in South America (although Rio is tropical enough for that not to matter)... besides that SA isn't as wealthy as most of the other regions that have hosted the Olympics.
- RuelJ, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2Rio is the winner! Check the digg story: http://digg.com/olympics/2016_Olympics_Host_City_W ...
Congrats Rio! - jman583, on 10/01/2009, -1/+3If Tokyo hosts the Olympic games I'm hoping for one thing, giant robot fights.
- Zapita, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2i can truly say that Atlanta had the WORST mascot ever (Izzy, the blue snot, remember? awful, it should have been as Sam the eagle, that was pretty cute)
- zacharytelschow, on 10/01/2009, -1/+3So... Obama is over in Copenhagen pitching the Olympics while simultaneously meeting with Congressional leaders to address the domestic problems our nation is facing while pondering what he's actually going to do about Afghanistan while pestering his team about how they're going to follow through on their word to close down Gitmo while trying to get Ahmadinejad to take his calls?
Face it. He's over his head and by opening his big mouth has put more on his plate than he can handle. Going over and getting the Olympics for Chicago (which is a sealed deal, otherwise he wouldn't have gone) should not be a priority at this point.
"But Bush..." is no longer valid. You don't like him. We get that. He was president and isn't anymore. Get over it. - athinnes, on 10/02/2009, -0/+2"world city"
sorry baltimore - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2-"lack of enthusiasm among locals for hosting the games" is very far from saying support is 50/50. I never said it was as strong as other candidate cities, nor is it a strong figure. You are just wrong. Half the population supports it, so there is a good amount of enthusiasm.
- You are basing your corruption accusations on things that haven't been proven? I agree with you that there is corruption in the Chicago government, but to think things like this don't happen all over is crazy.
-I don't care how bad violent crime is in the other cities. I stated one of the four I know for a fact is worse than Chicago, and if you look at the statistics, Chicago is not even one of the worst in the country. The reality is, it's not as bad as suburbanites and the media make it out to be.
-I'm not talking about new tracks, or even new lines. I am talking about new CTA cars, better ways to track trains and buses, and more advanced means of efficiency. This can all be done in 7 years.
I don't know if most people see your posts day after day, or actually look at your history, but it's obvious you have some sort of hatred for the city of Chicago. It mostly relates to Obama or the Democrats. It was an assumption on my part, and I may be wrong, but I am just calling it as I see it.
I am just curious, why haven't you moved out of the area if you are so disgusted with it? - nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2It's close. Rio would have it in the bag if the IOC was confident they had the infrastructure, planning, and financing in place to make the Olympics work. They don't quite, so Chicago is the favorite with bettors right now.
- jnisme, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2How many is a brazilian?
- wellstd1, on 10/01/2009, -1/+3Obama going to the IOC vote is going to be huge for Chicago. He's an international celebrity and I do not underestimate the influence he is going to have. If I were to place a bet I'd put it on Chicago.
Now, I have no doubt in my mind that Chicago will completely mess it up (no offense Chicago) especially with the whole funding thing. Atlanta did the exact same thing and the Atlanta olympics have been hailed as the worst in many many years. - DigitalBenjamin, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1The real reason Chicago lost??? http://www.olympicringschicago.com/
- jnisme, on 10/01/2009, -1/+2"Other than saving the auto industry, re-establishing the US in the world's eyes, getting Russian cooperation on Iran, preventing a Great depression, undoing regressive policies like the Gag Rule and making right wingers display their true psycho colors?"
Let's see. GM is now controlled by the government, the world thinks that we are a bunch of pussies who won't stand up to bullies, we are in the midst of economic failure which is NOT improving regardless of what NBCABCCBS tells you (based on real life), he's only allowing the transparency that he promised on things which will garner positive reaction, and he is proving to be everything that the right said he was.
You are a blind fool. - publiclurker, on 10/02/2009, -0/+1Being raised by a single mother and working his way to becoming the president of the US involved no sacrifice? Better crawl back under your rock and work on hiding your ignorance and hatred a little better before you associate with decent people.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+1Oh and Tokyo IS the most expensive city in the world to live in.
- d3dm, on 10/01/2009, -1/+2Well all I can say is if Chicago does get the bid, Mike Ditka had better be lighting that torch.
- brightmidnight, on 10/03/2009, -0/+1Actually, Atlanta's Olympics were the only privately funded Olympics (that therefore didn't have massive cost overruns foisted on the taxpayers as almost every other city has had). They also found good uses for the major construction-- Olympic Stadium became the Atlanta Braves' Turner Field, and Olympic Village became dorms for Georgia State.
The Atlanta Olympics were only bad because of the bombing, not its funding. - wolfing, on 10/01/2009, -0/+1when they dance they look like 3
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -3/+3-The current opinion on the games is 50/50.
-Violent crime is no where near as bad as it is in Rio, and is on the steep decline. Hell, Chicago is not even one of the worst in the country:
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0921299.html
-The corruption claim is ***** (surprise):
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-12-10-cor ...
-The money going to the fund the Olympics IS FOR increased public transportation. "At present...." Um well yeah the games are 7 years away.
-Your union claim is subjective/biased *****.
-Yes the sales tax is high, but what this has to do with the 2 weeks the Olympics are here, I have no idea.
I just continue to find it amazing that you drag partisan politics ***** into almost every comment you make. Yes, Chicago is a Democratic stronghold. Yes Obama is from Chicago. Get over it. Educate yourself. - nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -2/+2Other than saving the auto industry, re-establishing the US in the world's eyes, getting Russian cooperation on Iran, preventing a Great depression, undoing regressive policies like the Gag Rule and making right wingers display their true psycho colors?
Yeah, I guess that's "very little". Pfft. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -3/+3Have you compared the cost of living in Chicago to Madrid and Tokyo? I think you would be surprised. Chicago is actually one of the cheapest world cities to live in.
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -4/+4Unlike some other presidents this is a guy who can walk and chew gum at the same time.
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -1/+1You are a idealogue and a nincompoop who believes whatever nonsense Glenn Beck and Michelle Bachman feed you. Enjoy the next 7 years..
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -5/+5So by your logic we should hold the next American Olympics in DesMoines? Good plan there, Lou.
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -2/+2Actually, he's talking to Congressional leaders on AF1 and then speaking with European leaders while he's in Copenhagen about Iran. Good enough for you?
No, of course not. Nothing he does would ever be good enough for you. - PeanutCheeseBar, on 10/01/2009, -1/+1Try Baltimore sometime, you'd be surprised.
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -1/+1Hiarious. You two can't keep straight who's who and are now insulting each other. Typical of the breed.
- debaser7673, on 10/02/2009, -0/+0oh yeah! NE ohio has the gay games! wonder if GM will try to advertise the camaro?
- nightsweat, on 10/01/2009, -3/+3Wow, you really are deep into the Beck zone, aren't you? This "ploy" to get the Olympics started in 2007. How prescient of Obama to know that he'd need a distraction right now and how fortunate that he was able to convince corporate leaders and politicians of both parties to help him. Truly he must be the Messiah as he clearly has the ability to see into the future.
Idiot. - nomarxist, on 10/01/2009, -4/+3OK Voters, let us make our own personal sacrifice and send these two back to Chicago on January 20, 2013. That will give them ample opportunity to do things for the kids...like taking away their knifes, guns and clubs... prior to teaching them to ride bikes, swim, play bassetball... and how to run faster than others chasing them!
- jnisme, on 10/01/2009, -2/+1And you can't admit when you are wrong. *****.
- KenSPT, on 10/01/2009, -6/+5I'm sure he can walk and chew gum, he can also read a teleprompter and make jokes with David Letterman, but unfortunately he can't enact any real change.
This is nothing but a ploy to divert national attention away from the fact that his initiatives have either failed, or are going nowhere. He hopes that by bringing us the Olympics, people will forget about "the important things" and still praise the man as the Messiah.
Will kids be singing songs in honor of Obama at the 2016 games too? - PeanutCheeseBar, on 10/01/2009, -7/+6I'm currently in Chicago on business, and while I don't explicitly hate this city, the taxes and cost of everything here is insane and just plain unreasonable. If my place of employment didn't pay for me to come here, I don't see how I could ever want to come and spend as much as I have just on parking for two hours, or a 10.25% tax on anything I buy.
Like I said, I don't hate the place, but people who come here to watch the Olympics will be shocked at just how expensive things are and likely won't spend as much. Add that the roads are already clogged enough as it is and the cot of living will only go up in the next six years, and it will be a nightmare to try to watch the Olympics here.
I'm glad I gave up on watching after the tools at the IOC thought China was a good place to hold it. - RealmDown, on 10/01/2009, -3/+2GIVE HIM THE CHAIR! GIVE HIM THE CHAIR!
- zacharytelschow, on 10/01/2009, -3/+2Honestly, I think that would make more sense.
- chinolofus, on 10/01/2009, -5/+4its not like the olympics will be held in the violent neighborhoods.
i hope we dont get the olympics. we dont need that worthless money pit to ***** up the lives of chicagoans. and for what?some stupid games. - zacharytelschow, on 10/01/2009, -3/+2-50/50 is hardly supportive of the games, and significantly less so than other candidates.
-Violent crime isn't as bad in Rio, but what of the other potential hosts?
-The fact that there's a more corrupt place means Chicago isn't? And the article was based on CONVICTIONS. Excluded from that were those who didn't get caught as well as activities that are difficult to prove (patronage, pay for play, etc).
-The money going to fund the Olympics is for public transportation? My mistake, I thought other improvements and facilities would be needed as well. Also, you honestly think significant improvements can be made to existing infrastructure in 7 years? You haven't watched government in "action" enough.
Most people would consider what I said straightforward reality. The fact that you consider it "partisan politics" shows just how far out in left field you are. [The fact that Obama is from Chicago has nothing to do with my strong opposition. The fact that I'm from the Chicagoland area does. I don't want to foot the bill for this expensive circus.] - KenSPT, on 10/01/2009, -5/+3... yet, night sweat, it seems accomplishing very little is good enough for you.
You guys throw around the "but Bush" argument that Zachary mentioned in the post above all the time, so in that vein, you know full well if Bush focused on something like this while in this situation, he'd be criticized by all the Liberal Diggers, mocked on shows like The Daily Show, and it would be used as an example of how his head isn't really "in the game".
You can't have it both ways. - KenSPT, on 10/01/2009, -3/+1It's Digg, with long threads with obscure usernames, mistakes happen ... seeing that his comment is right below mine, it's an honest mistake.
My bad jnsime. - KenSPT, on 10/01/2009, -3/+1I can easily admit when I'm wrong, but right now I'm not.
... and way to be mature with the use of the word "*****", does wonders to establish you as someone whose opinion I respect. -
