Oh, Chicago making the case in THAT sense. My mistake. - firesights, on 04/05/2009, -4/+29Chicago should have several of the games held at Wrigley field, so that at least SOMEONE would win there.
- PhairOh, on 04/05/2009, -4/+18Our bus system is fantastic, it's our rail system that needs improvement. I know that there has been and continues to be a lot of construction and improvement there right now, but what is really needed are 1 or 2 more lines, perhaps something like concentric semi-circles that will go from Lakeview to Bucktown to West Loop to South Loop. In that way, it would no longer be necessary to go into the loop for virtually all train changes.
- dext3r, on 04/05/2009, -1/+11Trick question. The answer is Ditka.
- firesights, on 04/05/2009, -2/+12- bitter Cubs fan
- Daniel591992, on 04/05/2009, -2/+11I think Chicago is going to win, but I'd love to see it in Rio. Anyways, Brazil has the World Cup in 2014.
- Daniel591992, on 04/05/2009, -2/+11Call me crazy, but every game has a winner and loser.
- BoredDigger, on 04/05/2009, -4/+13CHICAGO 2016
- dext3r, on 04/05/2009, -0/+9we got plenty for all IOC members!
- wild, on 04/05/2009, -5/+13Huh? I think our bus system works pretty damned good.
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -2/+9but what about the hookers.
- adml_shake, on 04/05/2009, -3/+9I'd be happy to see the Olympics come to the city since I only live about an hour from there! But they need to really clean it up. Parts of it are pretty dirty looking and could use a good power washing or sand blasting (sides of buildings, streets, sidewalks, ect).
- d3sapar3cid0, on 04/05/2009, -1/+6"The city of Chicago is closing public schools, and they've closed public health clinics. Where is all the money going to come from when the city is suffering in this way?" asks Tom Tresser, spokesman for No Games
Best point of the article. There are no benefits to us hosting the Olympics. We will just have a bunch of empty ghost buildings and even more debt. I definitely hope we don't get it. - Cheesehead9805, on 04/05/2009, -3/+8Go Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Zapita, on 04/05/2009, -0/+5oh well, at least is easier to travel to US
- CapnBans, on 04/05/2009, -2/+7Uh, and Beijing was spick and span?
- G-RaZoR, on 04/05/2009, -0/+4Man you crazy!
- benitojuarez, on 04/05/2009, -0/+4we need to handle our deficiet or we'll end up in debt as bad as california and i doubt it can be handled by 2016, lets take some time to handle our ***** and then we can try for em in 2024 or even 2028. If our state can't iron ***** out by then, then we don't even deserve to host the games.
- cloudcity, on 04/05/2009, -0/+4I think the real question is: Can they afford not to?
Or not, that just sounded good.. - d3sapar3cid0, on 04/05/2009, -0/+4Are you kidding? Both the trains and buses are PACKED TO CAPACITY at rush hour. How the hell are we going to accommodate the Olympics on top of that?
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -4/+7fantastic way to take taxpayers money and give it to corporations.
- ElatedPanda, on 04/05/2009, -4/+7the willis tower.
- saikyan, on 04/05/2009, -0/+3yeah its the L that needs the most work. Way, way undermaintained and underfunded.
- purplesawdust, on 04/05/2009, -2/+4Who would in in a fight? The US Olympic Team or THE BEARS
- docbob84, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2And Rio and Tokyo are clean enough to eat off the sidewalks?
- Julian88888888, on 04/05/2009, -0/+2"Officials say much of the Games' cost will come from private financing"
- FFFREAK2787, on 04/05/2009, -1/+3As someone who lives in chicago, i as well as alot of my friends and co-workers dont want the olympics hereall the money needed to make this city olympics ready will run this city to ground. WE DONT WANT THEM HERE.
- thrashertm, on 04/05/2009, -0/+2you're an idiot.
- m4rty, on 04/05/2009, -3/+5macy's took over marshalls.
- saikyan, on 04/05/2009, -1/+3By god I think he actually made those references... on PURPOSE!
- thomazwrx, on 04/05/2009, -0/+2I love Chicago but Im hoping Rio wins! There has yet to be a Olympics hosted in south america. |<0>|
- thrashertm, on 04/05/2009, -1/+3I live in Chicago. I don't want the ***** Olympics to come here. It will just be a big goddamn mess, since this city is a mess (big budget deficits, etc.)
Furthermore, Daley will just use the Olympics to enrich his cronies. Let some other city carry the burden. - mabhatter, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1quite the contrary though, US cities can generally use the upgrades. Chicago already has a Football, Baseball, Basketball arenas, as well as several universities that probably already have the equipment for gymnastics, and other sports. I think they need to look at what schools and public places already host the teams for training purposes and upgrade those locations to "Olympic" grade it won't be wasted money because they would already be in use.
- guitmusic11, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1I'm sure we can find some money from that bailout bill for this ;)
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -1/+2you actually believe that. hahaha
- Julian88888888, on 04/05/2009, -1/+2you're an idiot.
"Officials say much of the Games' cost will come from private financing" - guitmusic11, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1which happens to be where most of the Olympics would take place
- dext3r, on 04/05/2009, -1/+2yup, youre gay. shut up.
- dilloway, on 04/05/2009, -1/+2PhairOh is right. Every line runs in and out of the loop. It really seems inefficient when you're trying to get somewhere other than the loop. After visiting NY, I realized how useful it was to have lines intersecting throughout the city. Although, I don't think the Olympics would help since most people would be traveling in and out of the loop for the events.
- sanotaan, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1@PhairOh: the bus/rail issue is intertwined. Were the bus system fantastic, the non-intersecting rail lines problem could be mitigated, if not solved outright, by efficient buses. CTA buses have come a long way in the past 5 years or so, but you can still wait upwards of 25 minutes trying to get from Brown to Blue on Western and from Blue to Red on Fullerton. Aside: adding the bus tracker (for use by those with mobile devices) was a great step in the right direction.
- petro62, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1I just heard that Chicago got some more money and a really good chunk of money is going to the CTA to get new train cars and buses. I agree that the design of the L is horrible, but then again I think Chicago's main push for the Olympics is that all the athletes will be within 15 minutes of their venue. Everything is going to be right in the Grant Park area the way the news described it earlier today. So athletes will be fine, but those who want to see the games and residents will be S.O.L.
- marcios, on 09/11/2009, -0/+1Go Rio!!!!
- inactive, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1you do know that the olympics will IMPROVE many of the problems we have now right? im all for a better CTA, not to mention all the increased local revenue.
- markusfarkus, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1@d3sapar3cid0
I'm telecommuting those 2 weeks. And I'm renting my condo out for $10,000.
But seriously, I don't think we can realistically accomodate the Olympics, even with 7 years or prep time. - Relikh, on 04/05/2009, -1/+2Run more buses? Just a thought.
- cofo, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2World ends in 2012 anyways.
- d3sapar3cid0, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1Then explain to me why so many cities that host the olympics are now stuck with empty buildings and shouldering debt for dozens of years.
The city has already stated that it isn't going to improve it's public transit system (the only thing I was hoping for) and that many of the buildings will be temporary. They are going to build a potemkin village in the middle of the south side and then just abandon it after the Olympics. Also most of the facilities that are already present, can not simply be "upgraded" to olympic standards without simply rebuilding the entire thing.
Most of the Universities around here do not have very large athletic facilities since we are in the middle of a city. Most don't have a football team and the basketball, soccer, and other teams use multipurpose arenas and centers in the suburbs that are used and shared with a variety of other sports and organizations year round. - factory81, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Good point...and if they try and fix up the south side in the process with private financing which could create more tax revenue for these clinics and schools....EVERYONE WINS!
