- thecolemanation, on 08/24/2008, -2/+30I live in China. I have never seen a single one of these new notes. I do know that you A) have to go to the bank to get them B) Not a single person would spend them and C) You can't use them in vending machines. As well its only this most recent series of money that has Mao's face older bills had pictures of Chinese ethnic minorities. I think its also very interesting that Mao hated money and would never touch the stuff. Kind of a shot in the face.
Most people also don't realize that Mao's legacy is controversial here. Its as if Washington had led the army and then set up economic policies that killed a 1/3 of the people. We'd still remember him for leading the army and saving our country but would talk about how he held us back, killed our people but gave us freedom. Its the same here for most people. - rjhomuth, on 08/24/2008, -2/+22So when are they putting Shawn Johnson on the U.S. dollar?
- Xoti, on 08/24/2008, -2/+20But will it blend?
- cmadach, on 08/24/2008, -1/+17It's commemorative, not permanent. In Canada we already have winter sports depicted on our quarters, and the Games are two years away.
- bigcynic, on 08/24/2008, -1/+17Don't laugh. President-for-Life McCain will replace Washington with a waterboard on the $1.
- charliebucketts, on 08/24/2008, -0/+13Better than Iraq.
or Afghanistan. - absurdist, on 08/24/2008, -0/+12It's not at all surprising. Mao was a Communist. Whatever the current rulers of China may call themselves, they're no way in hell Communists.
- wonttellya, on 08/24/2008, -3/+13***** China. Free Tibet! Nah, it gets old.
***** US. Free Texas!
You enslave our people to mow your lawns. It is 100 degree out there and you pay $25/lawn! We used to OWN those lawns! We want our lawns back.
How many people did I just offended? Yeah, I know. People like me, who have no idea where Tibet is and haven't study the history of Texas/Mexico, saying something like that are just ass holes. - kirakun, on 08/24/2008, -0/+10I think they should create an eight dollar bill just for M. Phelps.
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -2/+12China = Capitalist
- minnepinne, on 08/24/2008, -2/+11Leave Mao alone!!!
- Dymphna, on 08/24/2008, -2/+10Wow, currency now? Really, the China bashing is stretching for it now. There were some legitimate ones before but...
Seriously, commemorative currency is the hot topic? - kanariya, on 08/24/2008, -4/+11time to drop that douche mao
- rockstar1o9, on 08/24/2008, -0/+7duh? it's been capitalist since Deng came into power in the late 70's / early 80's
- neko, on 08/24/2008, -0/+7In Australia we had some Olympic coins. No-one read any political meaning into that. And they could have - given the occasional outcry that we have the Queen on some of our currency. But we've got lots of other famous people through history there, too. 毛泽东 did plenty of bad things, but he's still a prominent figure from the past. Would you have China whitewash over their history so as to neatly fit in with your stereotyped view of their government?
Personally, I think that the money should have more pictures of mao (猫) on them, rather than mao (毛). But that's just me ;) - se7er, on 08/24/2008, -1/+7It's commemorative!!! Not "Chairman Mao is out,the Bird’s Nest is in."
- Pinkshisno, on 08/24/2008, -0/+6Would be better if they were Michael Phelps gold dollar coins.
- statuescrumble, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5FREE TEXAS!!!!
- fatas, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5You ***** China is no.1 on the medals tally, how the ***** does a gold medal = bronze medal.
- cookiemonster01, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5FREE TEXAS!!
- Justice101, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5Haven't heard that one in awhile. How've you been?
- kingmanic, on 08/24/2008, -0/+4Don't forget the birds of Beijing.
- adikt, on 08/24/2008, -0/+4@paganini9: I admire the witty linguistic nuances of your well worded retort. It's a lot better than the usual "***** you" found on Digg. You, sir, have earned my digg, and eternal respect. I am now listening to Concerto for violin No. 4, in D minor in your honor.
- donkz, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3i like how particular sites tend to sort olympic medal count by total, not by gold
- Iztikeit, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3FREE BIRD
- kingmanic, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Different from what? The town I was born is shifts so much that each year I visit I get lost. The culture has shifted and my parents feel alien in the town they grew up and met in. China is shifting rapidly and the "grip" the central authority has, has slipped. China hasn't changed at the break neck pace Russia has, but that may be for the best. China is shifting, manageable change doesn't come over night. As the middle class gain more wealth they will demand more representation. It's inevitable.
- LiberalKid, on 08/24/2008, -1/+4He never hurt anyone!!!
Well except for in the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution and well those political enemies that he had killed... - KegBol, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Actually, I was impressed. I've been to China about 5 times in the last 30 years, and each time they have been working their arses off to get people out of grinding poverty, and succeeding admirably. Brutal, gross human rights violators there are, but there are a lot of good people trying hard in that country and things are moving forward.
Can we still say that about us in the West? - adikt, on 08/24/2008, -1/+4You're a douchbag... the logistics of detonating the desired amount of fireworks in a crowded city was an the verge of retarded. It was done so they didn't kill any of the money bearing touris.... I mean, citizens.
- deevay, on 08/24/2008, -6/+9it's CG.
- adikt, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3I like turtles.
- Stuntaneous, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3by particular, you mean American.
- antonycao, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2Most diggers fail in their history class. And geography too.
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -1/+3Yeah! It's what us Communist countries do!
- yalvin, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2OMG ! it is just to MARK the Olimpic games and is a LIMITED edition ... don't understand why the hell you or you reporters MUST connect it with politics !
- kingmanic, on 08/24/2008, -3/+5Not to mention his tastes for young teen girls. Many of my relatives in china are tickled at outside acknowledgment of that. He's not that loved of a leader.
- Vuredel, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2I still think on their bills they should print LOLcats. Or maybe ROFL猫?
- antonycao, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2propaganda
- DestroyFascism, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2America is #1 even if they are second....
- jabrthel, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1That made me laugh.
- DeFex, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1My cat was sitting by the stove for ages because she though she found some Mao se dung
- OstrakonX, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1Seriously, look at all the ***** pixels.
- philhatesyou, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1He said world powers. Russia is the only European country on that list.
- ZeeZee2k, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1So your id is Neko huh, I see.........
- jabrthel, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1Sorry man, comment dugged down. I know the article talked about a lot of other stuff, but that was forced upon us by an incredibly idiotic lead about a commemorative note that doesn't really affect anything.
- DestroyFascism, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1Clinton is free! We know that~!
- notironic, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1FREE WILLY!
