- fuzzmeister, on 08/13/2008, -3/+205Amazingly enough, this is already out of date, he just won his 11th:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/200 ... - Monotonousblob, on 08/13/2008, -3/+141And now 11th medal!
- winmywii, on 08/13/2008, -0/+136googles, lol.
I think you mean goggles. Either that or the data center is flooded. - alwilson, on 08/13/2008, -3/+130During an interview after he won his 4th gold medal they asked him why he seemed upset after the event. He replied that his googles got screwed up and filled with water during his swim. He was disappointed that he didn't do a better time even though he won the gold and broke a world record. Wow, talk about being driven.
- jocnnor, on 08/13/2008, -7/+78That doesn't make any sense because everyone knows the goggles do nothing...
- DickyT83, on 08/13/2008, -2/+72Back when we were kids and michael phelps told me he wanted to be an astronaut, I said "nah dude, try swimming." good thing he listened.
- dopre, on 08/13/2008, -1/+6811th. GOLD. Medal.
5 out of 5 events he competed in he won the GOLD medal and broke the WORLD record each time.
absolutely astonishing!
The best Olympian ever! - andrewlotta, on 08/13/2008, -8/+67Michael Phelps isn't part dolphin...
or fish or amphibian
He doesn't have gills, or flippers, or fins
Then again, if you squint your eyes
and the light is juuuuust right... - ironeus, on 08/13/2008, -5/+59unbelievably impressive, he's entered a new league!
- speakerfordead, on 08/13/2008, -1/+53Bitter much?
- mackii, on 08/13/2008, -5/+54As amazing and impressive etc as it is. Swimmers do have a wee bit of an advantage over other fields in the competition for most gold medals, simply because of the number of events. You would not see a boxer or a short distance runner win 11 gold medals because theres no where near 11 events for them to enter. So I would hesitate to declare him the greatest olympian ever. Despite an obviously awesome achievement.
- j0hnk377y, on 08/13/2008, -0/+46Mark Spitz did it with a hairy chest and a bushy Tom Seleck type mustache. Imagine the water drag on the mustache alone....
- clonkid, on 08/13/2008, -2/+44Still waiting for the dolphin DNA test.....
- winmywii, on 08/13/2008, -0/+39The rule should be all swimmers have to swim naked. It's only fair. They may lose some ratings on the men's races though.
- Paal, on 08/13/2008, -1/+37Phelps must have swam away with his girlfriend
- fuzzmeister, on 08/13/2008, -1/+36Let me guess, you were always picked last in gym class?
- Rev0lver, on 08/13/2008, -2/+35He IS the league.
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 08/13/2008, -5/+33Michael Phelps is to the Olympics what The Dark Knight is to the box office.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 08/13/2008, -4/+32I'm still not too sure what to think about the newest swimsuits they're wearing. They were said to reduce water drag by 10% and the constant stream of world records seems to be backing that up. Not to say that Phelps isn't deserving these records, but hell, in the 4x100 final, five teams broke the record in the same race.
I wonder if we'll see the rules shift anytime to no full body swimsuits, speedos only. - daEXpress, on 08/13/2008, -2/+27Buried / Drowned
- Gnar04, on 08/13/2008, -1/+25if anything these suits should be mandatory for all teams. race cars use spoilers and such, why cant swimmers essentially do the same
- palmdoc, on 08/13/2008, -1/+24Current medal standings
1) China
2) Michael Phelps - bunkka, on 08/13/2008, -1/+23YA! dedication and determination is a terrible character trait for kids to admire.
please - MysticSavage, on 08/13/2008, -0/+19The dude is ***** Aquaman. He probably communicates with dolphins in his spare time.
- jasz, on 08/13/2008, -3/+22Sorry to rain on your parade but... one hour later he got his 11th medal...
- LacY, on 08/13/2008, -0/+18i've been arguing this with all my friends. Even like a female gymnast can only win 5 medals (the team comp and each event) in one Olympic year. A freestyle only swimmer can do the 50, 100, 200, 400, 1500, be part of the 4x100 freestyle, 4x200 freestyle, and 4x100 medley. That's 8 events where the swimmer has to perfect only one stroke. Counting all the other strokes/distances (aside from marathon), there's 16 different swimming events that one could enter. That's a lot more medal options that most olympic events. This is not to say that Phelps' 11 golds isn't impressive, but in just two Olympic appearances, that'd be *actually* impossible for most athletes, regardless of their skill.
- izelpii, on 08/13/2008, -3/+20You idiot! Knowing him, probably he'd be on Mars and back by now!
- Gnar04, on 08/13/2008, -0/+16true, but its just a swimsuit. overall all athletes do and will use the latest in technology and innovation for whatever it may be. I dont think its cheap, or cheating, its just progression of the sport.
- quomen, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16iizh, I disagree. Speedo's own research concluded that it can improve your speed as much as 2%. It makes a difference when it comes down to hundredths of seconds between swimmers, but Phelps has DESTROYED the records. More so than the extra 2% of speed can account for.
- MaverickSmooth, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16I wouldn't mind if the all time winningest olympic athlete was my kids rolemodel
- spuggy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+15You're correct, he volunteered for the new drug testing program that requires daily and extensive testing.
- trieste, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16Just to note that other swimmers have had 100 years to get this many medals. He is beating people who train all their lives for one event.
- eq2s, on 08/13/2008, -0/+15They'll gain ratings in the women's races though.
Women's naked beach volleyball would go alright too I'd imagine. - greengarfield, on 08/13/2008, -5/+19I would love to be that enthusiastic about him but the 2000 Olympics and the Marion Jones scandal and all those doping cases falling years after they won medals just showed us that if something is too good to be true it probably is. Really hoping this isn't the case...
- phrozen755, on 08/13/2008, -0/+14DOLPHIN BLOOD
- misimiki, on 08/13/2008, -0/+13They should all swim naked - you cannot argue against a level playing filed like that!
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -1/+14I think they are definitely helping, but with the amount he is beating the records I think he could do it even with a Spitz moustache. The only one that was really close was when he had malfunctioning goggles, and he still beat it.
- nephilimx, on 08/13/2008, -1/+13Not the same without his rival Ian Thorpe, since he retired.
- vspazv, on 08/13/2008, -1/+12I guess he's not trying to pose as a human anymore...
- rohcky, on 08/13/2008, -1/+11To be fair, Phelps only wears the bottom part of the suit. Most other swimmers wear the entire body suit and he still beat them by a large margin.
- chanop, on 08/13/2008, -1/+11People that are coming in 3rd place in some of these races are beating the old world records
- frostbyt, on 08/13/2008, -0/+10Piss from Lance Armstrong.
- larissa13, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9This guy is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! He is...Aquaman!
- heatmiser, on 08/13/2008, -12/+21Doping is absolutely rampant throughout the olympics and professional sports. The public wants to believe in its heroes, but if you follow the various sports closely from the inside, you soon discover that drug use is everywhere. With immense pressure to win world records, and fame and possibly fortune on the line, and the (accurate) belief that your competition is using drugs, deciding not to use anything is basically unheard of. Despite all the public denials and PR campaigns, behind the scenes athletes and their trainers are engaged in a constant battle to avoid detection.
Sure, a lot of athletes pretend to play innocent when their trainer gives them "vitamins" and "B-12 shots" so that they can cry plausible deniability, but in private they have to know that something is up when their performance fluctuates wildly between using "supplements" vs nothing. Cases like Marion Jones or the various baseball pros are just the tip of the iceberg.
Basically any sport where money and glory is at stake and being stronger, faster, and healing quicker is helpful, you will find drugs, That's pretty much every sport. I can believe that perhaps synchronized swimming or something like that might be mainly natural, but few other categories. - itsameericle, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9I'm pretty sure that they drug test him every day he races, if not every day itself.
- daEXpress, on 08/13/2008, -2/+11C'mon Michael....Save the water for the fishies...
- MysticSavage, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8Are you kidding? Those synchronized swimmers are the biggest juicers in the game!
- LacY, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8Phelps wears the top of the suit for some competitions. He didn't wear it for the butterfly, but definitely did for the freestyle events I saw.
- Dignin, on 08/13/2008, -2/+10Gangly? he's 195 lbs at 6'4...way to fail AP with being descriptive...
