He blazed. so what?
Bong Hits For Phelps! - pheyze, on 02/06/2009, -14/+291This is absurd. I can't even comprehend how skewed the priorities are in this country.
- thebullisred, on 02/06/2009, -10/+153what the *****
he didn't violate any rules but is being sent a "message because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,"
kellogs not sponsoring = good riddance
and he still sucks at speaking english... he should stick to winning gold medals and doing an entire bowl in one hit - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -6/+124my god he only smoked some weed its not like he smoked meth and beat up a hooker
- broncfan23, on 02/06/2009, -15/+117This is my rant
It should have been left up to the States in the first place like the Constitution says. The War on Drugs has been a complete failure and anyone who denies that really hasn't looked at the facts. So much of our tax money is being used to people who have AIDS and cancer. More than $10 billion is wasted. In the Netherlands marijuana is decriminalized and its usage rate is lower per capita than the USA. Prohibition was tried before and it failed, just like it is failing now. It is easier for kids in high school to gain access of marijuana than alcohol. If it were regulated it would keep people who choose to do it away from dangerous drug dealers and prevent people from going to the black market. A number of economists have endorsed the idea of it being beneficiary to our economy.Marijuana has been responsible for 0 deaths while alcohol and tobacco are responsible for almost a half a million deaths per year. It is not physically addictive but then again people can get addicted to almost anything these days does that mean we should shut down fast food places because people are addicted to hamburgers.
Of course I could go on and on about it. The fact of the matter is that people who tend to be against it also have a tendency of generalizing pot smokers as a whole. They think, "oh they will be unproductive to society and not amount to anything. They will just sit around on their couch's all day having the munchies." Well 1. So what? what concern is it to you? and 2.2. There are plenty of people who have smoked marijuana and have gone and done great things. "Oh but what message does this send to the kids?" Well eventually they will figure out the hypocrisy and the lies perpetuated about marijuana. There is a huge chance they will eventually get confronted with marijuana in school, just like alcohol. The best thing to do is educate them about it and tell them how to be responsible about it, again just like alcohol. With the internet growing you can't continue to expect a kid not to be curious about it and not look the subject up. There he will see there are negative effects to using it but that it isn't as bad as people say it is. What's he/she going to do then?
Please I invite you to watch this movie. It is called The Union: The business behind getting high.
http://blip.tv/file /1356143 - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -2/+100I like how this gets so much more attention than his DUI. ***** retarded.
- RyanElston, on 02/06/2009, -8/+102At this point, since there isn't anything he can do about his sponsorship and suspensions, I think Phelps should change course with his approach. Instead of apologizing - like a total pussy - he should start campaigning FOR marijuana. He is in a incredible position to influence public opinion about how we treat marijuana usage in this country. Instead of trying to climb back in the bitch pocket of his sponsors he could actually be a pioneer and really accomplish something for the good for the country.
- izikdela, on 02/06/2009, -5/+70***** THE DEA!
***** THE PROHIBITION!
IT'S NOT WORKING! - Murrabbit, on 02/06/2009, -4/+62Oh noes not the Marijuana! He won those gold medals because he was crazed with the refer madness!
- rizzo2008, on 02/06/2009, -2/+50hm... approaching $11 trillion national debt and we are worried about some people who smoke a harmless plant? Couldn't agree more
- scottelloco, on 02/06/2009, -4/+50Will they also force him to wear a scarlet letter on his shirt?
- JamesBondJr, on 02/06/2009, -7/+52That's just from competition though, I'm guessing there's nothing in there about practicing with the team. A little time off... is it really that bad?
- Yoshiler, on 02/06/2009, -3/+43This is starting to get Re-GODDAMN-diculous. He hit a bong. Get. The *****. Over it. Honestly. Write some country songs about it while you're at it.
- brjohnson789, on 02/06/2009, -10/+49Dammit, this country is HELLA LAME.
- alanocu, on 02/06/2009, -8/+45Kellogg nixes sponsorship!? Dude?!!! Now even I think that's excessive and I'm not even a pothead. I may just throw out my Frosted Flakes. Visa, Speedo, Omega and Human Performance Labs are still hanging in there with him. The pot-headed pool prince will be fine. His Olympic triumphs can never be taken away. The silly photo will be forgotten.
- Nickolassc, on 02/06/2009, -4/+39This is MADNESS!
- Kolbeck10, on 02/06/2009, -0/+34Or he could take his sponsorship money and buy more weed...
- sugarazor, on 02/06/2009, -2/+35In the meantime, he can sit at home and watch NASCAR, featuring vehicles plastered with ads from Jim Beam, Crown Royal and Budweiser!
- crazzy88ss, on 02/06/2009, -0/+33Whoa, he had a DUI?
- Seanathan, on 02/06/2009, -3/+32Absolutely ridiculous, and I don't even smoke.
- bieber, on 02/06/2009, -0/+25This is just a wild guess, but I have a feeling he really doesn't give a ***** about marijuana policy as long as he can get away with smoking it in private, and really likes having heaps of cash lying around from his sponsors. Unfortunately for us, not everyone is as...uh...politically astute as us ;)
- asunesara, on 02/06/2009, -1/+25I'm sure Kelloggs signed him on for a lot of money because his popularity was at its peak. Now that the Olympics are over (popularity or face-time decline) and the economy has slowed, they have a perfectly legit excuse (not reason) to nix him.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -4/+27Retarded.
BTW, I am boycotting Kellog's since they dropped him. ***** Kellog's. - DiggzDE, on 02/06/2009, -1/+24"Enough is enough," said Evan Morgenstein, who represents a large number of Olympic swimmers. "The penalty is far greater than the crime. He has said he is sorry. Let's move on to the real problems in this country."
Seriously... - tehchicken, on 02/06/2009, -1/+23Yeah! Why isn't USA swimming trying to pay off the debt?
- bbevan7, on 02/06/2009, -2/+23you shud be band from teh englash langwage.
- CrazySpaniard, on 02/06/2009, -3/+23***** retarded
- Frankyfan3, on 02/06/2009, -0/+20lol
Thanks, I would loose my head if it wasn't bolted to my neck.
And as my son is a 52 year old gay bear, he is quite happy about your plan. - chuckDontSurf, on 02/06/2009, -2/+22While I agree with your sentiment, I can't quite stomach the word "hella."
- DrewPeacock, on 02/06/2009, -3/+23I'm suppressing a cough as I type this.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -4/+24just as Torrents != priacy, right?
Seriously...you can defend him if you want...but to suggst that he may not have been smoking pot really makes you look silly. - anizzle, on 02/06/2009, -1/+20Greatest documentary I've ever seen.
For the lazys --> http://blip.tv/file/1356143/ - DrewPeacock, on 02/06/2009, -0/+18Hey bub, nice name.
- sharkd, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19MADNESS!? This is USA swimming!
***kicks Nickolassc into the pool, for phrase-baiting*** - fajitamelt, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19Excuse me, is this your 'u'? Yeah, you left it in the grocery store parking lot. And yes, I did follow you all the way home to return it. Yes, I wrote down your address and I plan on molesting your son tomorrow at the bus stop.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19Email the Executive Director of USA Swimming and let him know what you think of the Phelps suspension.
Chuck Wielgus: 719.866.3579 - Executive Director cwielgus@usaswimming.org - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -7/+24This punishment is *****.. But just think about how even more ***** it is that there are actually people in jail for weed. A plant that grows naturally and is less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. Wake up America.
Instead of complaining about it on digg, we should get involved to change the laws and legalize. We can change this.
http://www.change.org/ideas/view/legalize_the_medi ... is one of the sites advocating for change. - serif69, on 02/06/2009, -1/+17Digg needs a pot section...
- warbrain, on 02/06/2009, -2/+18Think about all the money that could come from legalizing it and putting a tax on it. HELLO MONEY!
- DiggzDE, on 02/06/2009, -2/+17Mine's from a cold AND weed. Best medicine available.
- mjulian211, on 02/06/2009, -3/+18Who gives a flying FuSchnickens what the hell Michael Phelps does with his body. He just won 8 gold medals, and he is a grown ass adult, let him smoke himself silly if he likes. I mean, it's pot...
And to those who say, "but he's a role model!" Where are the parents educating their kids about drugs and about choice and freedom and decision making. Michael Phelps knows how important his lungs are to swimming, and I am sure he is well aware of the consequences his actions have on his life...
Election cycle is over...the media is just looking for anything to shove down people's throats...Everyone should just mind their own business. he didn't hurt anyone except himself. - TheEngineer2008, on 02/06/2009, -1/+15I doubt he has any meets coming up, based on his interview with 60 Minutes.
- XenoSNK, on 02/06/2009, -1/+15It's a good thing that he didn't do something worse to his body like drink alcohol or smoke a cigarette! ... er, actually, he'd probably get more sponsors that way.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -6/+19THIS IS SPARTAAAA!!!
/me kicks you down a conspicuously wide and deep well free of safety rails - Jakesweb, on 02/06/2009, -5/+18ITS HIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT
- Nickolassc, on 02/06/2009, -0/+13Digg needs a Michael Phelps section...
- Frankyfan3, on 02/06/2009, -2/+14He owes an apology... but not the one he's given.
The 89% of the 800,000+ Marijuana "Criminals" in the USA that were prosecuted (in only 1 year!) for possession alone, that have lost their livelihoods, their rights to vote and much more deserve an apology for his shortsighted, money-lust response to the controversy.
(BTW, that is more than all violent and property crimes COMBINED)
Drugs are a public health issue, and should only be criminal if someone drives or does something which harms someone else. He could have been a man, and spoken out against the destructive, crime-inducing institution of prohibition, and he didn't.
Lame. - Jakesweb, on 02/06/2009, -1/+13should be changed to aDouche
- YodaOfDarkness, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12and ***** THE RIAA too
...? - mytealjacket, on 02/06/2009, -1/+12Your argument is bunk. Where do you get the idea that only the minority of pot smokers are high functioning? I work in an academic setting with highly educated and relatively successful people. Most of them have smoked pot at some point in their life.
I don't think there's any evidence to suggest people who smoke pot are less ambitious or successful than people who don't, certainly not on a global perspective. From a one night perspective, sure, people might be less motivated to do some things, for example not want to fight or to leave the house, but it doesn't have lasting effects. Marijuana is NOT physically addictive, that's because even though your high goes away after a few hours, THC actually exits your body slowing over the course of about a month. You don't feel a withdrawal, because your body has a chance to compensate (in its effort to maintain homeostasis or hormonal balance).
Plus, THC has significant positive effects, why do you think so many people do it? It feels good, it helps you see things from a different perspective, it makes you laugh, it relaxes your body and alleviates stress. It is not physically harmful and you don't feel sick the next day. Plus everything tastes 100% better when you're stoned, and all your digg comments get realllly long. ;) -
