- CanadaMan87, on 11/14/2008, -1/+27I'm stiffed thinking about gymnast probe.
- suzannethetiger, on 11/14/2008, -5/+17pshaw, Bela Karolyi was a blatant cheater during his whole career. He would yell and act aggressively at the judges until they changed their scores for his athletes, among other things. You can be sure that if he could have had 9 year olds competing in the Olympics somehow, he would have done it. He just didn't have the opportunity. On an unrelated note, Bela should probably be charged with a crime for the awful, horrible, dopey choreography of his gymnasts.
That said, the Chinese are pathetic, blatant cheaters. 1/2 the girls on their team were underage and everyone knows their win was a sham.
No one is going to give a crap about this post because no one cares about this sport beyond the Olympics. - chas46, on 11/14/2008, -3/+12 This sounds like the kind of thing that any major ruling group would make a fuss about until the story died.
- andydumi, on 11/14/2008, -4/+12If it wasn't for the girls participating in the junior olympics it would not be an issue. But when your documents say 14 one year and then newly issued documents say you are 16 the next and the old documents are nowhere to be found it makes it a bit fishy.
Sadly, this will continue to happen. What the IOC should do is keep tabs on these athletes for 5-10 years before the Olympics, as they appear on national teams, junior Olympics and other national and international events. - Foofoofoofoobar, on 11/15/2008, -1/+9The Chinese aren't trying to look good to the rest of the world. They're trying to look good to their own citizens. They've also got the citizens thinking that any foreign criticism of China is just the Western world being bitter and racist.
- Naieve, on 11/15/2008, -1/+8Yeah, except for a couple of the girls "mistaking" their age in press conferences.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 11/15/2008, -1/+7Have you been following this news from the onset? They wouldn't show their old passports, and their birth certificates in past said they were 14. That's what kicked off all this controversy, all their records said they were 14. It was only at the beginning of this year when the Chinese couldn't overturn IOC's decision to limit gymnastic Olympians to 16 and above that they produced new passports with the new age.

Only he has the mastery and attention to detail to confirm or deny their eligibility. - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -4/+9Do people really still care about this?
- nepidae, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4"You can be sure that if he could have had 9 year olds competing in the Olympics somehow, he would have done it. He just didn't have the opportunity."
From reading the article I doubt he would deny this, however he plays within the rules (im assuming). Also the biggest point is that the chinese were hosting and that was their opportunity. That isn't just cheating, that is undermining the entire event. - vsujohn2, on 11/14/2008, -2/+6Come on man! They aren't even 16!
- seraphim72, on 11/15/2008, -1/+5They do it to make sure the young aren't exploited. Sure, if you take a child at 1 you can warp them into anything ala Brave New World. Watching a 14 year old girl destroy her body so that a nation can cheer is crap, thus the rules.
- epithet, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3jesus ***** christ can we let this go already
- andydumi, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4They are also frowned upon for being unfair, as clean athletes would not be able to compete with wealthy drugged up athletes. Drugs are expensive, and not everyone would be able to use them. Plus you would have an "drug race" of creating better and better drugs which would be prohibitively expensive except for a few of the world's teams.
And he means its the same as in they are both forbidden by the rules, but one is more strictly enforced than the other. - andydumi, on 11/14/2008, -4/+7The older, veteran Chinese athletes looked just like the American and Russian and other athletes. It was particularly the girls whose ages are in question that were very small by comparison. Maybe because of their age?

Hell, if we got our asses handed to us by some kids, we probably shouldn't keep talking about it. I'd want to let that die. - urbandistrict, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2THERE HE IS!
- mRIpX, on 11/15/2008, -1/+3Typical Bela, whining and crying till the end.
- SolarisFlare, on 11/15/2008, -1/+3I find it hard to take a sport seriously when they need to ban people for being too young. There must be a way to level the playing field that will allow 16 to 30 year olds to play at a higher level that their younger counter parts do. I’d give out ideas but I don't watch the sport myself.

- vsujohn2, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Fail
- smotpoker, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2It's called objective reasoning. I dislike classifying something that is proven harmful as similar to something that is not. Similarly, most people would not call a person who gets busted a "criminal" though there is great potential harm from it and it is technically a crime.
There is good reason why something that is actually harmful would be more strictly enforced or penalized than something that isn't - go figure. - heartsblood, on 11/14/2008, -2/+3I see what you did there
- Mekun, on 11/14/2008, -2/+3Same issue in that both are considered cheating. You must have selective reasoning.
- grungegbunny, on 11/14/2008, -2/+3Actually performance enhancing drugs are frowned upon because of the unfair advantage.
I would expect more from someone with the name "smotpoker". - GezusK, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Sorry, but that's crap. So the kids suffer for a couple more years privately before being exploited for national pride. The rule does absolutely nothing to stop it. If anything, letting them compete younger may give them an out quicker.
- jschau2, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2I think it's ridiculous. Bela is right, there are girls at home wondering why they can't compete when obvious 12-year-olds are on the Chinese team. I think the age-limit thing is stupid, but if the IOC is going to make a rule, then they need to enforce it.
- Wrangler76, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Or maybe it was because they decided to correct the records a long time before the Olympics, and it remained in Google cache? The other records didn't disappear. If they did, then why did CHINESE NEWSPAPERS first report the age discrepancy, using older CHINESE NEWSPAPERS as a source. This was not some huge government cover up like you somehow think. You're an idiot. You've lost all credibility. End of story.
- bisforxbeauty, on 11/15/2008, -3/+4I was wondering when this was going to resurface.
There was one girl on this year's team that was OBVIOUSLY twelve and one that was OBVIOUSLY ten. There shouldn't be any need for legal documents, just looking at the girls proves that half of the Chinese gymnasts weren't 16.
""If you take it away and our kids lose, they lose," he said of the age limits. "Those Chinese kids are good. I have nothing against the Chinese kids. But how about the other kids who were staying home? Here's Rebecca Bross, two months short of being able to compete, sitting, crying in front of her TV, watching kids younger than her compete.""
Exactly. They were good, but they could have waited their turns like all the other countries' gymnasts have to do. - googleabcd, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2It is a common sense that west people(white) always look much older than Chinese with the same age. If you think a Chinese girl is in 14, it is very likely that she is already 16 or even older. This Chinese female star(赵雅芝) was already 53 years old when she took these pictures. http://www.weps.cn/attachments/forumid_26/20070904 ...

- smotpoker, on 11/14/2008, -2/+2"I would expect more from someone with the name "smotpoker"."
Conversely, I would *not* expect someone who judges the merit or content of a comment based primarily on the name of the poster to bother reading a comment before replying, hence I am not at all surprised you completely failed to realize I addressed that specific point: "If they were not dangerous, most trainers would recommend them, the best performers would still be making it to the Olympics, it wouldn't be banned and nothing would be unfair about it." - LoJack, on 11/15/2008, -2/+2How does it feel to be beaten by kids huh? Still trying to get revenged. Lol. Yanks are sore loosers. america sux ass!
- nosecohn, on 11/15/2008, -4/+4I find it ironic that the Chinese lied about the ages of the gymnasts in order to look good in the eyes of the world by winning, and in the end, they look really bad for cheating. I know that I personally have a far worse impression of them now than I would if they had placed second or third in the gymnastics competition.
- cuoops, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1Damn, 500 photos.
- andydumi, on 11/16/2008, -1/+1Selective quoting above.
Read this from the article he quoted:
"Earlier this month, the AP found registration lists previously posted on the Web site of the General Administration of Sport of China that showed both He and Yang were too young to compete. He was born Jan. 1, 1994, according to the 2005, 2006 and 2007 registration lists. Yang was born Aug. 26, 1993, according to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 registration lists. In the 2007 registration list, however, her birthday has changed to Aug. 26, 1992."
Maybe it was magic that changed the records in time for the Olympics... and also made all other records disappear.
Also, starting next year all athletes will get lifetime licenses from the IOC. These are still based on a passport provided by the home nation, so they could still create issues much like this year. - evcil, on 01/24/2009, -0/+0Evcil Hayvanlar hakkında her türden bilgiler, resimler ve videolar bulabileceğiniz platform.
http://www.evcilshop.com - Wrangler76, on 11/15/2008, -2/+1*****. The 20 year old Chinese gymnast looked nowhere near 20 compared to the older American girls, but she wasn't under question at all. How strange.
- Wrangler76, on 11/15/2008, -3/+2Please provide a source. First I've heard of that one.
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -8/+7not a peep about americans being stuffed to the gills with "vitamins" though
- Wrangler76, on 11/15/2008, -2/+1Stop spreading lies please. They showed every single document that was requested when it was asked of them. They did not refuse to show passports or birth certificates. The FIG asked for passports, and they complied. The Americans bitched so the FIG requested tons of documents, and they still yet complied again. Their birth certificates in the past did NOT say they were 14. Where the ***** are you making this ***** up from? The regional competition records (NOT birth certificates) said they were 14, which meant that local newspapers would use the same source.
"Chinese gymnastics officials handed over passports, ID cards and family residence permits after the FIG -- at the request of the International Olympic Committee -- asked for additional documentation on He, Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan, Deng Linlin and Li Shanshan".
"The international federation has required the delivery of birth certificates and all the documents like family books, entries in schools and things like that,"
"The FIG announced Oct. 1 that all six gymnasts were old enough to compete, but only after more than a month of reviewing passports, ID cards and family registers. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year in order to compete."

http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/gymnastics/ ...
When you say, "all their records", I assume you refer to how the Chinese Sports Body had listed them as being underage years ago- some Chinese media and organizations referenced this source as well, which like I said, could've been one mistake that lead to many since they all would've used the same originating source. Ever wonder how a lot of newspapers here get their sources? From Reuters and other news organizations, then they do their own editing of the source information to create their own articles. It's the same concept for god's sakes. Of course, you idiots will ignore this simple logic because you're so hardwired to believe that they MUST have cheated so thus, this is undeniable evidence. - grungegbunny, on 11/14/2008, -11/+10China lost (more) face by not coming clean.
