- Slashered, on 02/20/2009, -6/+30He doesn't need to be given a second chance in the first place, so stupid.
- itsabrandnewday, on 02/20/2009, -2/+18second chance? this is a ***** non-issue. why does it seem that A-Rod admitting to steroid abuse gets less press than phelps hitting a ***** bong? god this world has its priorities messed up.
- Frankyfan3, on 02/20/2009, -0/+11*ahem*
Third chance, he did have a DUI a few years ago. That was the first strike.
(I don't really think the bong incident is a "strike" but for the sake of continuity of the article, I'll count it as one... he did also blow 2K on Beer Pong that same night. Personally, that is far more revolting and disappointing.) - Coreyc150, on 02/21/2009, -1/+8considering that smoking damages the lungs, I think they should double his medals. 16 gold medals!!!
- gwellington, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6Phelps taking a bong hit has nothing to do with the possibility of him being "on" anything. Idiot.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5his medals mean nothing to you because he doesn't want to be the poster boy for marijuana? There ARE bigger issues ATM, fyi. ;)
and yes, I'm a pot head myself. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Phelps' pocketbook is nowhere near 'severely' hurt. Also, you're a moron.
- jbob2000, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4GTFO.
- dhughes, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3 I don't think the point is, or should be, that he smoked pot I think it was he as an Olympic athlete is supposed to set an example. If he sat around eating pizza pockets and drinking rum it would still not be a good example, it just happened to be pot.
- MrBogard, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3Blowing 2K on Beer Pong is ***** awesome.
I like this guy more now than I did when he was just an eight time gold medalist. - WraTH017, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3No his medals mean nothing to me because they LITERALLY mean nothing to me. They mean the world to him... and I'm sure you get my point. His medals though impressive, are just really that and nothing more... A personal achievement that really affects nobody but Michael Phelps and people ready to wave an american flag for any possible reason.
Now, he might have actually meant something to me if he had taken a stance and said "I did nothing wrong and I'm not apologizing".
And I agree, there are bigger issues at the moment, but I still manage to squeeze some extra time to read about retarded ***** like the Michael Phelps pot saga. :) - Kewlies320, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Great ***** point.
And considering A-Rod will make something like 20x more money than Michael Phelps ever will...it's kind of funny.
Before someone buries this please understand that I'm not saying Phelps is any less of an athlete because he makes less money than A-Rod. It's just that baseball sells - the teams have multi billion dollar backings. - iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2You say there are bigger issues at the moment; but this is symptomatic of one of those larger issues.
It's a story of ideals over objective facts. They say pot is bad for you because it leads to health problems and underachievement and then don't recognize the irony of applying that to Michael Phelps.
It's the same mentality that pervades the economic and political world today; welfare and forced altruism are good, unions are good, big businessmen that provide jobs are bad, 'increasing the balance sheet' is good, saving money is bad, etc. etc. - Zervaman, on 02/21/2009, -3/+5***** ***** I just don't understand why this has caused such a *****
phelps smoked pot, just like obama, clinton, and around 1/2 of the adult US population. who the ***** cares? - insomniacal, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Umm, wouldn't that be a THIRD chance? He was already caught DUI.
- Meursault, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Troll.
- jsauter, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Personally, I think he is setting a really good point. That being you can consume marijuana and be a successful and positive influence on society.
- iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2What if we are not really swimming in the water; the water is swimming in us?
- iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2No *****, buddy; the whole escapade was less a strike against his character than an endorsement for marijuana.
- m3arvk, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Social conservatives and/or the producers of products consumed by them?
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1I respect him more for making his own personal choice. Regardless of what your/our opinions are on pot and its usage doesn't really matter. The law is the law is the law. It's illegal. I wouldn't want to be the poster boy for MaryJ legalization either if I was in a country controlled by rich white christians who are scared of lots of stuff.
- m3arvk, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Right, but the whole point we are trying to make is that smoking a little pot shouldn't make you a bad role model. The whole idea of marijuana being some evil drug is forwarded without any real basis.
- SpeedyG, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Don't know what news you've been seeing.
Maybe the nightly news whips into a frenzy about Phelps because more people know who he is vs. A-Rod, but ESPN pundit shows are just about unwatchable with the steroid-a-mania going on. - WraTH017, on 02/21/2009, -4/+5***** Phelps. He could have come out swinging, and instead came out apologizing. He could have helped push drug reform forward, but chose to play into their little game of misinformation and ignorance about MJ.
Fine, he wants to be that way that's his choice. He's got his career ahead of him and he's free to choose whichever course of action is best for him. So don't blame me for choosing to have no further respect for the man. His medals mean nothing to me. - warriorscot, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Ir shouldn't matter what he is doing when he isn't competing he should be able to behave in any way he wishes. I have an extreme dislike of sporting bodies that enforce rules of conduct when not in competition or representing the sporting body.
It would have been fair enough if he did it when he was at the olympics I would understand that as a problem but when an athlete isn't competing he is a free agent. - pezangel, on 02/20/2009, -1/+2
Agree with you - m3arvk, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Someone break out the facepalm ASCII...
- m3arvk, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Because stupid people are stupid.
- insomniacal, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1This and his DUI.
- Corrosionx, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1I admired Phelps so much before he apologized for smoking weed. What a coward.
- icndvl, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1Phelps is a wuss for not telling everyone to ***** off on public TV.
- yerlordnsaveyer, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2have you ever seen an olympic gold medal.....on weeeeed?
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1I wrote this high so it actually didn't come out right. I meant to say, "that have EVER died by smoking pot."
- borschwanger, on 02/21/2009, -2/+3caught inhaling? what? look at the photo. there is NO smoke in the photo. there are NO bubbles in the water. you can see NO lighter. the only thing the photo proves is he is in possession of a water pipe. not a crime.
- nochilinopity, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2No, I'm pretty sure I'll remember how he killed it at the Olympics
- Alathea, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Why is HE supposed to set an example? Why not Kobe or A-Rod? Where is this all-situation covering rule book that says athletes and actors and singers and what not owe any of you jack *****, or have to be an 'example'?
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -2/+2Yeah, give him a second chance when he didn't do anything wrong. You know, eventually the propaganda machine in this country will catch up with what we already know: Smoking pot isn't bad for you, and drugs like Alcohol and Tobacco kill more people every day than the amount of people that have died by smoking up every now and then.
- iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1You can get indignant all over again!
- Zervaman, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1More than 100 million Americans have tried marijuana; 14.4 million Americans are estimated to be "past-month" users. Yet there are only an estimated 2,075,000 "past-month" users of cocaine and 153,000 "past-month" users of heroin.

Why does anyone still care? He isn't even being charged with anything anymore.
- iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0If he sat around eating pizza pockets and drinking rum; we would have to re-evaluate our judgment as a society as to what constitutes healthy eating.
- remixity, on 02/21/2009, -2/+1give Phelps a second bowl
- iamacyborg, on 02/21/2009, -1/+0Everyone loves to see a hero disgraced.
- Nouman6, on 02/21/2009, -2/+1I like how on ESPN when it was first reported the lady said "marijuana pipe" then PTI came on and they put it out as bong :)
- Tyrghast, on 02/21/2009, -2/+1It's been like a month, why is this still being strung out...
- linuxpenguin, on 02/22/2009, -2/+1Well I guess if you count anyone who's ever smoked pot, even once. . .
- linuxpenguin, on 02/21/2009, -2/+1Half the population?! Where'd you get that from? I doubt that.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -2/+1Who Cares this story is over the dude smoked some ***** weed, people that make a deal over him smoking make me sick to my stomach
- DirtPile, on 02/21/2009, -3/+1oic. Makes sense.
