- MysticSavage, on 07/29/2008, -7/+266. Ethnic cleansing now a demonstration sport.
- DonKarnage25, on 07/29/2008, -1/+16What good is venue reconstruction when the athletes are gonna be choking and falling over during competitions due to pollution? I can't wait to watch the 5000m races. I wonder how many of them are actually going to finish.
- TheDarkstarter, on 07/29/2008, -1/+16Do mean 'bad' as in 'bad' or 'bad' as in 'bad'?
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -7/+18China is and always will be a third world country, you can stick a few gold bricks in a huge pile of ***** but I'm not fooled.
- Aliwalla, on 07/29/2008, -2/+12Only going to watch if the ***** hits the fan with Xinjiang and Tibet
- aethere, on 07/29/2008, -5/+14Too bad they don't mention the air pollution, horrible internet service, etc.
- YodaJones, on 07/29/2008, -4/+13Who ***** cares. It's still the Olympics. This is so putting makeup on a pig it's unbelievable. Buried.
- iggy2012, on 07/29/2008, -13/+22Free Tibet!
- LlamaKing, on 07/29/2008, -1/+10I hate it when people write their own name at the end of their comments
~llamaknight. - TheOle, on 07/29/2008, -5/+13In before a flood of "Free Tibet" comments.
- lattin1, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7You got ripped off. You can get four 22oz. Tsingtao's for a dollar at any street vender in Beijing and its even cheaper in smaller cities. Screw the beer though. How bout that Chinese white wine? Any culture that can create 112 proof wine can't be all that bad. As for the pollution, I started smoking while I was there so atleast my air was filtered.
- chinauprising, on 07/28/2008, -2/+9Wow, a http://www.foreignpolicy.com/ link on digg. Impressive.
- theacer, on 07/29/2008, -1/+7you forgot the best part. I went to the qualifiers for track and field in the bird nest. For 3 dollars, I got 2 beers and 2 sausages on a stick. This will by far be the drunkest games ever. A person can buy a beer (500 ml) for less than 50 cents or .30 euro. If i payed 100+ dollars for a ticket and 200+ for each night at a hotel, 50 cent beers will be drunk and plenty.
(note for pollution, From being in Beijing for 2 months, I can tell you that its really bad. I had developed a cough from it, and from another foreigner I was told that pretty much anyone who doesn't smoke develops it. ) - DesignNerd, on 07/29/2008, -1/+71 Billion Chinese people.
- Phearce, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Baddest. Defined by Urban Dictionary -- Toughest, coolest.
Always used complimentary, unless used by someone who has poor grammar and does not know that the superlative form of "bad" is "worst".
Ironically, "baddest" and "worst" are complete opposites, despite the fact that at first glance, they appear to be synonyms.
Don't mess with Harold, he's the baddest one here! - bosssmiley, on 07/29/2008, -3/+8"At least $40 billion total, including $35 billion for new roads and subway lines, $1.8 billion for venue construction and renovation, and a $2 billion operating budget. At roughly 2.5 times what Greece spent on the 2004 Athens Games..."
And how much more buying power did the dollar have in 2004?
Beijing Olympics: come for the sport, stay for the toxic smog and dissident beating. - aliengoods, on 07/29/2008, -2/+7Just so you know, I dugg you down for atrocious grammar.
- DesignNerd, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5it is. A few close friends have lived there, "every morning was like waking up and getting hit in the face with a ***** covered towel."
Stunning. - DesignNerd, on 07/29/2008, -0/+5Maybe they meant "(das) Bad" in the German sense, meaning "Bath"...
- Anonchrist, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5WTF? My Nike Air shoes are clogged...
- ileftfark, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6Either you didn't actually read the article, or you have the intelligence of a troglodyte homunculus.
- BrutusCirrus, on 07/29/2008, -5/+9All that money and still you wont be hardly able to see through that air.
- DonKarnage25, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6My brother used to go there all the time for work. From the way he described it to me, the country's a giant pile of *****.
- ilistenisee, on 07/29/2008, -3/+7$ stole from Tibetans? do you know how much $ China has pumped into the region in economic development and education? dnt make stupid comments like tat if u dnt know *****. Tibetan child slaves? Do u know how many Tibetans were slaves back in before 1950s?- a feudalist society where less than 1% of the elites govern the region with 95% living in extremely impoverished conditions and serving the elites.
- lattin1, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6I lived about 400 yards from the Bird's Nest with a balcony overlooking it. There were atleast 3 days over a 5 month span where I could barely make out the silhouette of the stadium. You can actually smell the pollution alot of the time. I will say that the air quality got drastically better as the Olympics got closer but relative to America its still pretty bad.
- thylacine222, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4bad.
- AirPortPanic, on 07/29/2008, -0/+4don't worry, it's still a list.
- SHuisman, on 07/29/2008, -3/+61 million cameras ? who is going to watch them ?
- rblancarte, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4I don't think there is general disinterest, I think the event has a lot of interest.
However, I FULLY agree with what you say. I don't doubt that groups are laying in wait to cause a ruckus. And if that happens, then the world will be watching when and how China reacts (Tiananmen Square 2008 anyone). - PopcornDave, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Do you maybe think that general disinterest in the entire affair is pushing a lot of this? I have a feeling it's not going to be the wonderful PR event that the Chinese government is hoping it turns out to be.
I'm not expecting Munich 72, but I'm seriously expecting some kind of disruption that's going to be swiftly and brutally quelled. - tim04, on 07/28/2008, -3/+6can't wait to see the opening ceremonies next week. Will probably be ridiculous considering the money involved. As long as it's not my money...
I guess it will be soon though at Vancouver 2010. - lattin1, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3Thats ice ***** and its pretty common to see people swimming in those lakes. I wouldn't say the water is clean. It would be like swimming in the Hudson but old Chinese men go out there in the dead of winter to swim for some reason.
- ilistenisee, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3all asian airlines have hot girls...they're very selective on their flight attendants. Unlike in the US...no offense, but, most of the flight attendants in the States are over 40. How can we even compare? I did see one really hot/young flight attendant one time, man...she was :)
- WiretapStudios, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4Us westerners can really learn a lesson here. If you save up long enough, you can go all out on a some new cameras and an Olympics.
- ssj2119, on 07/29/2008, -2/+5"At least $40 billion total, including $35 billion for new roads and subway lines, $1.8 billion for venue construction and renovation, and a $2 billion operating budget. At roughly 2.5 times what Greece spent on the 2004 Athens Games, China ’s spending spree is far and away the biggest in Olympic history"
Notice nothing there was said about the actual athletes or competitions. No one cares about the Olympics, just the governments hosting them so they get more money do buy stuff, evidently. I don't even know when the olympics are, who are the favourites and how long they last for. All I hear is controversy this, this much money on that. What a waste of time. Same for London 2012 (i'm from London).
World Cup I understand, everyone watches that (most watched program on television I believe?) but Olympics - most people I know only watch Gymastics and Athletics. - lattin1, on 07/29/2008, -1/+4Chinese airlines have it down when it comes to flight attendants. It's like the 1950's in America. Too bad my mandarin was crap.
- bosssmiley, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2"I'll take one!" - China
- blogpal, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2From the so many comments it looks like that this Olympics will be far bigger news maker than any earlier Olympics.
- shampoozleberry, on 07/28/2008, -4/+6Just drink this punch and walk into the light, okay? And when we wake up, we can all go downtown and play in the the river of semen!

Nice try government, but you won't steal my brain today. - depro9, on 07/29/2008, -3/+5No Iraqi's? WTF
- SexiestManAlive, on 07/29/2008, -4/+6I love Air China Girls. They are HOTTTTTTT!
- tinybubs, on 07/29/2008, -1/+3Between the dissidents, pollution, and the political oppression there is a huge disaster on the horizon. I wonder how many of the 3,600 planned hours of coverage will make it out of China. Don't be surprised if coverage a major event is suddenly interrupted with a switch to the equestrian or sailing venues.
- devnullDood, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2We had them build our railroads because we could get away with paying them next to nothing and treating them like slaves. Their speed is only due to the fact that they have 25 times the crew paid 1/25 of a normal wage.
- DonKarnage25, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2They've gotta hold the rowing events somewhere, right?
By the way, this image makes me wish I had my own mote. - stinkipete, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2Surely you mean moat?
- Darksider, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Boo doom bing......thank you folks I'll be here all night
- Paintball20, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1how does that bother u lol
~paintball20 - Tlogmer, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Oops. I upvoted before I read the last sentence.
- nydwarf, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2Prediction: China will win Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Human Rights Violation Event.
- Darksider, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2LOL I'm writing that down. Gotta use that phrase today
