- saar, on 08/21/2008, -13/+59I couldn't agree more with this article. Grow some balls Rogge, srsly guy. Not to mention the crazy scores Cheng Fei, the 20 year old chinese gymnasts got on the individual events. What was that about?
- grapesofbaath, on 08/22/2008, -7/+48That article is spot on with what is wrong with the Olympics.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -6/+36The IOC made a deal with the devil. The Olympics are all about money.
- kkxxyy, on 08/22/2008, -6/+25Rogge needs to grow a pair.
- duggdowncatisad, on 08/22/2008, -7/+21This editorial is epic win.
- rectagon, on 08/22/2008, -7/+20Rogge=FAIL. Unreal. Bolt was awesome. Laid back. Congratulatory to his competitors. Rogge deserves to be hung out to dry on this one.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -10/+23worst Olympics ever in terms of what the Olympics is suppose to represent. The Chinese are getting away with bloody murder and all these IOC bastards care about is the Torrents on TPB, Picking on athletes from small nations and snorting crack off of a Chinese hookers ass.
- SupaDawg, on 08/22/2008, -7/+19Well written Dan, I couldn't have put it better myself.
Out of all the things to attack, this ***** attacks one of the two major positive stories to come out of these games? ***** that *****. Go back to helping those crooked ***** Chinese dictators steal some more gold medals. - badmonkey6186, on 08/22/2008, -1/+13No kidding, that chick got medals handed to her twice.
- Merp08, on 08/22/2008, -1/+10Does anyone not agree with this? What bothers me is that everyone knows this already.
- IneedaSN, on 08/22/2008, -5/+13everyone has missed the biggest point of this article. CHINAS HUMAN RIGHTS PROMISES. while this country is committing genocide in several countries they pull in billions of dollars and create a smoke screen for their atrocities. When china got the olympics i was glad, so that public attention would be focused on them, forcing them to stop. But instead they have changed nothing and still reap all the benefits
- UNDERSTAR, on 08/22/2008, -1/+9Someone give this reporter a high-five for me.
- kjcdude, on 08/22/2008, -3/+10***** the IOC!
- Shuk, on 08/22/2008, -0/+7Jacques Rogge = the fun police.
After Bolt ran the 200m, it was like a big Jamaican party! Rogge is like one of those old corrupt leaders, whose reasoning for Olympic spirit is something like "it provides a higher profit margin" - Ricochet1269, on 08/22/2008, -1/+8Somehow I doubt Bolt would need you to protect him.
- DismantleRepair, on 08/22/2008, -1/+6Let's just chill for a bit. In a week, the Olympics will be over, and we can all stop pretending to care about the IOC pretending to care about China, and go back to simply pretending to care about China.
- neferiousrich, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5a duckwad: also known as a wad of ducks
- Bovorik, on 08/22/2008, -4/+9Granted, Bolt's got a bit of growing up to do (the "no.1, i'm no.1" in-front-of-the-camera thing), but as long as he's not a dick off of the track, what's the fkn problem?
What's more, does anyone else remember the last time the flagship track and field events of the Olympics, the 100m and 200m, got so much mainstream press coverage (even DURING the Olympics)? Rogge should be shaking his hand, not talking ***** about him. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -3/+7Rogge is a bigger ***** than I thought. It's not enough to ignore the Chinese governments jailing of Human Rights activists, or the crushing of dissent in Tibet. No, he has to attack the Jamaican sprinter Bolt, who as the article said is a breath of fresh air.
Rogge has had nothing but compliments for the execution of the Beijing Olympics. He did get tough though when unlicensed Olympic souvenirs appeared. He has his priorities. Profits are at the top and Human Rights are at the bottom. - tas08, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4The point is with such huge issues at hand, Usain shouldn't even be something he's talking about.
With great power comes great responsibility, and Rogge isn't using the former to exercise the latter. He is being a coward because he's afraid to call out the big schoolyard bully because it may force him to examine his role in allowing this scenario to happen. - tas08, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4True that. I mean yes Fei was good, very good, medal good, but sometimes her scores....? And especially compared with Shawn Johnson and Nastia Luikin sometimes...?
- kjcdude, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4What he did is why the Olympics are so amazingly popular. That single event has been shown to millions across the world. That single event caught people's eyes and made them pay attention.
People want drama, people want amazing feats to happen, the fact that he was able to slow down and celebrate 15 meters before the finish just goes to show how amazingly good this guy is. - Croaton, on 08/22/2008, -1/+4What in Bolts behavior was unsportsmanlike?
The pure an utter display of joy and celebration for achiving his long set goal of winning the olympic gold?
There is a time and place for everything. You should be allowed to celebrate your victory after you finished... you should be allowed your time to let out all that enegry that comes from achiving your goals...
If Bolt is being ripped for not congratulating the other contestants right after the race... why is the other contestants not reciving the same critisism for not congratulating Bolt? - tas08, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3The IOC makes politics a part of the Olympics when they let a nation like China who's human rights record is ***** when celebrating humanity is the purpose of the games. Then the IOC fails to make China live up to it's promises and until very recently ignores what appears to be blatant cheating. And I'm quite sure that all the fuss around the internet has helped the age issue become a big part of the news and helped lead to it's investigation.
Based on your post, perhaps it is you who should take less of a backseat in such matters. - wm2010russ, on 08/22/2008, -2/+5not true. you could see many american swimmers get excited after winning gold and no one said anything condescending about them; its just a natural reaction to realizing that you are the best in the world at your particular sport. i dont think that what bolt did is any different. just because you are happy about winning doesnt make you a "bad sport."
- Morreti, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3I like the fact that they have detained or done whatever they want to the protest applicants. That is the real atrocity taking place during the Olympics. Rogge is just another rich, political coward. Good day!
- pixelsoup, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Did you read the article? Have you read the comments? Do you know who Jacques Rogge is what he does and where he comes from? Who's commenting about Americans and medal counts? Who are you?
- norman619, on 08/22/2008, -3/+5More like it's about politics. The fact that China even got to host the games is proof enough.
- JDoorjam, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2The article is right on in a lot of ways, though I see it framed slightly differently:
Usain Bolt _has_ been acting like a prick after his (stunning) victories on the track. But by cowardly ignoring all of the other horrendous violations of the rules and spirit of the Olympic games, Jacques Rogge has lost all right to level such criticism and be taken seriously. - Y0tsuya, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2He's only welcoming his new Chinese overlords. Eventually we all will. By kissing butt right now he's guaranteeing himself a coveted spot in the gestapo.
- Thuban, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2I can't help but be amused at the thought that since the Olympics came to China that this Communist Oligarchy would somehow change to become a warm, fuzzy country. Cheating, lying is easy when you have no one to answer too. And yet when they do, everyone seems so shocked. The IOC committee members that picked China need to be lined up and shot.
- jabelar, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Haven't 100m and 200m sprinters been showboaters forever? I mean they've got gold shoes, and the women wear ear-rings, they bad-mouth each off the track, etc. I don't like showboating, but I though Bolt was really just celebrating and having fun -- I didn't see that as disrespect. Disrespect is when you don't shake hands or pat backs with someone offering it, or something like that. Pounding a chest is just a natural expression of victory, and Bolt's dancing was just some silly fun.
Actually, the only thing Bolt did that I found unsportsmanlike was when he slowed down at the end of the 100m. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -2/+4If the writer of this article, Dan Wetzel, and Usain Bolt were in Jail with me, I would protect them in the shower
- brusty, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3Wish Hunter Thompson was still around. He'd have a field day with this.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -3/+5Buried for being a retard.
- Napiertt, on 08/22/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I didn't get the impression that he was trying to show up anybody. It just seemed that he was blown away at his own performance. Afterwards he saluted/played for the crowd and exchanged congrats with the other sprinters as usual. This is a complete non-issue/non-story. But I guess as Americans didn't win there must be some negative spin applied.
- fugularity, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2"You should be allowed to celebrate your victory after you finished"
uh, HELLO, he celebrated BEFORE he finished! This is a major reason why he's being called unsportsmanlike. The perceived slight to the other runners after the race in the 200 is just icing on the cake. The real story is how he celebrated at 85 meters of a 100 meter race, and it's also disappointing that his time could have been even better... - toonworld, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1...or he needs to resign
- Esham1237, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1yeah I know what the point is, I was just saying the premise of the article is weak, because wetzel frames it as if Rogge came out calling Bolt a disgrace or something
- justinlillich, on 08/22/2008, -5/+6I can honestly say that if he were to be sentenced to hard labor, I wouldn't be sad. Shame on you, Rogge. Now there are others to clean up your weakness. Usain was a blessing to these games, just like Phelps. You're lucky that you have guys in these 16 days that will make people remember. To criticize Bolt for pounding his chest is the least of your stupid choices and coverups. I doubt you'll read this, but if you do I hope you take over as the commissioner for the NFL Europe. Oh, that's right... they don't exist anymore.
- grneye53, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1growing a pair of balls on this side of the fence is easier then standing right in front of the person that's going to cut them off and watch you eat them at the same time ! by the way have you seen their fast food over there, Balls are probably the easiest to choke down !
- Napiertt, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1That's the thing, he exchanged congrats with the other runners. I just don't get what the "controversy" is.
- Pongo0415, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1since when is being ladylike a sport?
- BulletsforRingo, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1this is the internet, it's okay to swear. Mommy isn't watching!
- baikalic, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1politics are intertwined with the olympics. deal with it. always has been, always will be. and all this politicization wouldn't have occurred if china had just played by even half the rules; they really messed this one up for themselves.
- smashingmonkey, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1You're both wrong. The olympics are about those thing in part, but more so about the world loving to watch great athleticism and competition. There's plenty of political nonsense and greed for sure, but that doesn't mean that the Olympics are about money or politics. It means that people love the sports enough to tolerate that other *****.
- Nick22, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1NOT HARD LABOR! YOU MONSTER!!
- Croaton, on 08/23/2008, -0/+0If he's fast enough he should be allowed to eat a damn cake and sign some autographs before he crosses the finish line.
- inactive, on 08/22/2008, -4/+4Cowards to the right of me, cowards to the left of me.....
- toonworld, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1just like everyone knows what's going on in Darfur, but nobody wants to do anything about it because there's no profit to be made by getting involved.
