The little girl gymnasts so much younger and have shorter "careers" than any of the other Olympic disciplines. There are couple ofl things that could be done to remedy this. Change the apparatus (especially unequal parallel bars) and make it more strength oriented to stop favoring tiny people or raise the min age to 18 or beyond to limit the abuse. It's called WOMAN'S gymnastics, woman should be the ones competing!

It isn't the age of competition that is the problem, it's the age they start training. It stunts their growth (which is why everyone thinks the Chinese girls look younger than 16) and can cause irrevocable bodily damage. But even if the competing age was 18 or 20, they'd still be training from the same age (as young as six in some cases is when some people start training). They train gymnasts the same world over, the US too. - BoSuu, on 08/31/2008, -1/+10I am sure the quality of life for the Chinese Olympic gymnasts is much higher than the majority of their population.

America got it's fair share of medals in individual events though, that they rightfully earned. But in team? They just weren't as solid as China. America was just rife with mistakes that shouldn't have happened (multiple athletes stepping outside on floor routines? That just shouldn't happen)

And a 2007 registration list. Then suddenly her birthdate changed to Jan 1, 1992, like MAGIC when her passport was issued 6 months before the Olympics.
This controversy wasn't created by the Americans, it was created by the Chinese. Get it right.
Also I would like to note that many Chinese have voiced concerns about the age of gymnasts and much of the investigation into these online documents was mirrored by Chinese forum goers. Beijing Olympics lip-sync'ing.....yeah, big deal, so many media and people jumped on it as if it's the greatest evil on earth. Yet no one (wants to) talk about Sydney Olympics fake orchestra performance or Pavarotti's lip-syncing performance at Turing Olympics.
Then the "fake" fireworks accusation -- despite the explanation which has been repeated hundreds of times that real fireworks of footprints did go off and effects were the same.
Chinese women gymnasts "clearly underaged" accusation everywhere, yet people don't (want to) look at pretty much all Asian nations' women gymnasts at this Beijing Games look underaged. 2 of Japanese girls are in fact shorter and skinner than He Kexin. Then the so-called online hacked spreadsheet-turn-to-text file. If some Chinese folks find a similar evidence against US athelets, people on digg would probably laugh their asses off -- WTF that kind of evidence is? A text file? I can cook up 1000 text documenting Shawn Johnson is actually only 4 years old and there indeed WMD in Iraq. So what?

Some Asian girls at my high school looked 13 when they were 16. A lot of Asians kind of have a culture shock when they come here and realize that everyone looks so damn old.
Plus, the intensive training of gymnastics stunts development (even stopping menstruation) and China can handpick the latest-developing children at an early age to get an advantage because of their unique sports system. It's VERY possible that they could be 16.
The "they look so young!" argument really has no ground to stand on. - Dymphna, on 08/31/2008, -1/+7I agree with this fully. The way gymnasts are trained (worldwide, not just China) is deplorable. The US is just as bad with this, the Karoylis are some of the most awful people I've seen (Oh yeah, call the Chinese 'half-people' real classy), and have many old athletes that underwent their training coming out to speak against them.

Asians often look younger. My best friend is 23, and she gets pulled over for looking too young to drive and gets carded for R-rated movies. Forget it if she tries to order alcohol, they won't even look at her ID, they instantly assume it's faked.
Gymnastic training ruins your body and stunts your growth. All over the world, these girls are trained from too young an age with too harsh a diet. The Chinese start a bit younger than some countries (many countries start at 6, some gymnasts in China start at 4) which causes even more irrevocable damage. The issue isn't the age of competition, but the age they start training.
Are they probably 16? I think so, maybe 15 and will be 16 that year (which is within the rules). Has gymnastics taken a toll on them and stunted their growth?
