- NBCLocal, on 10/02/2009, -19/+185And the Windy City blows it.
- PointGiven, on 10/02/2009, -10/+171Good, I think Rio deserves it more since South America has never hosted one.
- JasonMath, on 10/02/2009, -34/+161Good - the last thing Chicago needed was more of Mayor Daley's corruption on a large scale. 2016 Olympics - anywhere but Chicago!
- from a Chicago area resident - schwit, on 10/02/2009, -81/+160I guess Obama and Daley couldn't find enough dead people to vote for Chicago.
- burstaneurysm, on 10/02/2009, -9/+76While I didn't really expect Chicago to get em, I was at least expecting them to get to the final round. A first round knockout is pretty surprising.
- edstate, on 10/02/2009, -19/+78Wow. Bam went over there and everything... Jeesh.
- rossnyc, on 10/02/2009, -38/+90This isn't about Obama. The world is much bigger people.
- HappyProgrammer, on 10/02/2009, -13/+65They gave it their best shot. They didn't get the votes they needed. Let's move on people.
- arrjka, on 10/02/2009, -25/+76I don't understand why everyone thinks Chicago is, as one poster put it, "a ghetto *****." Have you ever been here? Sure there are bad parts, but the city is one of the classiest places in the world. And please don't tell me there's no crime in the slums of Rio...
- awinters, on 10/02/2009, -4/+49As a former Chicago resident with a lot of family still there, all the money the city would have been using to prep for the Olympics should be going towards fighting the crime and the unprecedented teen deaths going on in the city.
- mike42979, on 10/02/2009, -1/+44And Rio is beautiful with hot women.
- phydeaux70, on 10/02/2009, -7/+48It's a shame that the humor of this will be lost on so many.
- niradg, on 10/02/2009, -13/+53this is unfortunate, but it seems like Rio may have it in the bag.
- endustry, on 10/02/2009, -13/+45The Olympic Committee is notorious for getting bitchy when/if they feel their power is being contested or overshadowed. In other words: Obama's visit may have actually hurt Chicago's chances.
- relaxeder, on 10/02/2009, -7/+38Well, that sucks. Its not a huge deal though. It would have been fun to see the Olympic games come to the midwest but it looks like Rio will be the winner, and South America is long overdue to host, so I think they probably deserved it this time.
I should say though, I'm lurking the newspages and I love seeing much of the same crowd who complained that the Olympics shouldn't come to Chicago and how they couldn't afford it knocking Obama for screwing it up for America. And Fox Nation's running it as their red meat frontpage story, go figure...
It's all about politics, and most of it can't be explained away with any sense. - mwtapp, on 10/11/2009, -6/+37High-oh!
- dlm85, on 10/02/2009, -26/+52Obama is getting the blame for this somehow. First conservatives complain about him going, now he gets blamed for Chicago losing the bid.
- lukeruls, on 10/02/2009, -3/+28Zing!
- UTKevdawg, on 10/02/2009, -57/+82Do you think Obama will be humbled that his celebrity status could not bring the Olympics to Chicago? Nahhhh I don't think so either.
- RobertWright, on 10/02/2009, -41/+64Any City but Chicago!
- dangerdeej, on 10/02/2009, -21/+44Kanye had to weigh in:
Yo IOC, ima gonna let you finish, but Chicago had the best bid of all time...of all time! - jsuther, on 10/02/2009, -9/+31Chicago is likely second on the list of corrupt cities behind New Orleans.
- tugcow80, on 10/02/2009, -2/+23Chicagoian corruption is just more effiecent since we waste less time hiding it.
- PopcornDave, on 10/02/2009, -9/+30It's too early to tell. Reverend Sharpton hasn't issued marching orders yet.
/s - Brassbud, on 10/02/2009, -3/+23Nice.
- NetworkNed, on 10/02/2009, -2/+22Carbon-minus games in Tokyo? That will go right along with the perpetual-motion games in Canberra and the free-energy games in Munich.
- arrjka, on 10/02/2009, -2/+21Yeah, Rio has no crime.
- Brassbud, on 10/02/2009, -0/+18^^ They have, it's called "Daley Plaza".
- jpek00, on 10/02/2009, -25/+42This is all Bush's fault!!
- dbski4it, on 10/02/2009, -39/+56The Olympic committee is obviously racist.
- LinuxLars, on 10/02/2009, -8/+25Because he tried. It would have brought billions into our economy.
Were you upset when Bush went last year just to attend for 4 days?
What annoys me is the hatred for Obama, when the same folks give Bush a free pass (at least I didn't hear them complaining). Is party everything? - awinters, on 10/02/2009, -2/+18Chicago is a great city, but the only thing people around the country hear about it is the political corruption and inner city crime. Anyone who actually goes to Chicago will tell you, awesome city.
- johnnyfoto11, on 10/02/2009, -15/+31Our "Come for the games, stay for the gang warfare" slogan didn't resonate well with the committee?
- WraTH017, on 10/02/2009, -8/+23Using excruciatingly bad grammar to make fun of someone's public speaking skills: Priceless
- inactive, on 10/02/2009, -0/+15Taking a day out to try and score an Olympic hosting gig for your country isn't exactly going to cut into his agenda.
- weddle, on 10/02/2009, -4/+19Thanks russ3, I did butcher it. wow!
- Abscess2, on 10/02/2009, -1/+16Or Detroit
- matrixguy, on 10/02/2009, -3/+18We all know how this is going to play out - as it is already doing: The U.S. political right will use it as an opportunity to criticize Obama.
Additionally, we all know how this would have been interpreted if Chicago had indeed won: The U.S. political right would have used it as an opportunity to criticize Obama ("more useless spending!").
U.S. politics is weird :) - colinmhayes, on 10/02/2009, -3/+18second?! what ***** is this??!?
- PointGiven, on 10/02/2009, -0/+14Keep in mind that the last time the Summer Olympics was held in the U.S. there was a bombing that killed a person and injured many others. So, we really have no room to complain about other cities' safety.
- awinters, on 10/02/2009, -18/+31The White House had been resisting doing this and Obama himself got on television and said he wasn't going to do it, so I'm curious as to what made him decide to do it anyway.
I think Obama thought his popularity would get it done, but that is him being naive about IOC politics. People don't pay attention to it because no one gives a s* about the Olympics anymore.
The head of the committee is from Spain and he has been lobbying for Madrid for years.
The Brazilian government has been pressuring the committee to vote for Tokyo to get America out of the way of Rio and they have put everything they have into it.
In the end, while Conservatives will cheer with glee at a chance to chide him for this, if he hadn't gone and Chicago lost as well, they would be blaming him for letting America down by not going. - gianttoolbox11, on 10/02/2009, -1/+14The British guys over at the BBC said it best, Obama was in a no-win situation on this one. If he goes and they win, big deal, they were the favourites. If he goes and they lose, his celebrity status doesn't work, the world doesn't like him anymore, the world is going to end etc. If he doesn't go and they lose, everyone bitches about how they could have won if he went.
- tpmidd, on 10/02/2009, -37/+50Epic Fail
- fastcars, on 10/02/2009, -12/+25Shock. Corrupt contracts were shredded all over the city moments after. Most Chicagoans I know were hoping we didn't get it.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/02/2009, -16/+29Obama just wants to remind you that he inherited this IOC mess...
- Thumper13, on 10/02/2009, -3/+16Because the leaders of ALL the finalists were there. He wasn't the only one and we would have looked like ***** if he wasn't there.
The President flies places to support the USA....***** deal with it.
Did you whine and complain when Bush flew to Saudi Arabia to hold ***** hands with another man?
Just shut your ass up. - russ3, on 10/02/2009, -1/+13Dont worry, Rio is a quicker flight than to China.
- edstate, on 10/02/2009, -4/+16You're not wrong, but don't you think there was something last-minute and a tad desperate about him first saying he wasn't going because he was too busy... but then turning around and rushing over there?
It also would've seemed very different if it were another US city, besides Chicago. - OMGscience, on 10/02/2009, -7/+19So, that mean Obama can get back to work? Gitmo is still open, we are still in Iraq, Afghanistan is still undermanned and the "Stimulus" is not stimulating anything but the pockets of the people that raped the US in the first place. Still waiting for that change thing to kick in.
- Chahrlie5, on 10/02/2009, -17/+28Waiting on Carter to confirm this.
