- DisruptionFL, on 02/24/2009, -3/+29You mean we're going to live past 2012?
- dzneill, on 02/24/2009, -0/+21Rod Blagojevic will sell you the Olympic island for $50,000 worth of campaign contributions.
- senatorkevin, on 02/24/2009, -0/+20Funny how that entire stadium is going to waste now.
- orthodoxDrew, on 02/24/2009, -1/+19<3 Chicago
- mnpilot, on 02/24/2009, -12/+29That's the best we can do? A temporary 80,000 seat arena? China pushed the Architectural envelop and we put up a couple of tents on the lake front. Wow, what an embarrassment.
- Ica7us, on 02/24/2009, -0/+14ever been to Chicago? yes, on some days it's not great looking, but on most days it's about that color - blue-green.
- viytale, on 02/24/2009, -2/+14They forgot to have a pic of how they're gonna fix the terrible public transit system that is the CTA.
no fixing that = no olympics. - viytale, on 02/24/2009, -0/+10Like how they put the BMX waaaaay on the west side away from the entire city.
Also, washington park is hood as *****. 55th street is robbery avenue.
Safety first! - kayosthery, on 02/24/2009, -0/+9That "hood" will be gentrified as ***** by the time 2016 rolls around; if Chicago gets the Olympics.
- pilot3033, on 02/24/2009, -0/+8Having the Olympics usually means many of those problems are addressed to keep up appearances for the rest of the world, not to mention the boost to the economy in construction jobs, part-time jobs, and boosts to local businesses due to the influx of people.
- gincarnated, on 02/24/2009, -1/+9The birds nest is nothing but a tourist attraction now and attendence is poor. They only have one event scheduled in the next year and can't even find a long term tenant. It's now just another white elephant which London and Chicago if they win their bid, want to avoid.
- pegothejerk, on 02/24/2009, -0/+7Yeah, of course. Weren't you listening? The hippies will stare at lenticular clouds from the base of mountains all over the world on Dec 21st, and using their positive thinking will lift humanity and the earth into a different dimension where love, socialism, pot, the Olympics, and Doritos are all that we need.
The Olympics will then consist primarily of acoustic guitar playing, pipe construction, and face painting. enjoy. - allengeer, on 02/24/2009, -1/+8The draping of the Aon Building is kind of a really awesome idea.
- mnpilot, on 02/24/2009, -0/+7Here an idea,
How about use the money to improve Soldier field to the level needed?
How about build the aquatics center at Northwestern and then the school could use it?
You don't need to bankrupt the country or city (we are already there now anyway), the Olympics should be a showcase for the country and coming up with some better ideas for multi-use buildings that could have an after-Olympics-life would be better than the crap I see in this book. - jerrod73, on 02/24/2009, -0/+6I was under the impression the games brough a revenue stream with them.
- Gnar04, on 02/24/2009, -0/+6everything used will be Made in China... if that helps any...
- Chirp08, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Too bad we can't afford to host the Olympics.
- brownsin07, on 02/24/2009, -2/+7Its all fun and games until the Olympics are over and you are left with huge dept and a bunch of empty arenas.
- Chicagoland, on 02/24/2009, -1/+6Chicago public transportation isn't all that bad...
- treecha02, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5It'll be impossible to get around the city for about a month. That's it. Not a bad trade off for hosting the entire world for the most important international sport competition ever.
- korea, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5China figures that they'll be able to easily pay for the Olympics and then some with all the money and good will the U.S. owes them.
- jgopp, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4The city of Chicago isn't being funded by a government trying to present itself to the world for the first time. The US doesn't need to make a big statement like China wanted too.
- Torx, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4Not futuristic enough.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4mmm nothing like taking the red line late at night it smelling like urine and that one hobo lady, we call her (miss fandango)) that smells like rotten ass being in there.
- Aslan72, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3I really hope the mess with the governor doesn't scuttle Chicago in the IOC's mind. We've had alot of negative press lately.
- Table16, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Living close to Chicago and having the Olympics be there, it would a blast, even if it is in Chicago. I hope that they get it.
- Dr0x, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3Ok, let me start off by saying I love Chicago. I grew up in the suburbs about 45min away, and currently attend college in the City. Unfortunately, no matter how cool I think it would be to see the Olympics come here, I just don't think it is plausible. Anyone who has taken a ride on the El or any other form of public transportation during rush hour periods can understand where I am coming from, it can hardly keep up with the already present population. Also, from a safety perspective, Chicago has its nice areas for sure, however there are some pretty dangerous areas as well. There are public schools in parts of Chicago where kids cant even go outside during recess due to risks of gun violence. Just last year Chicago had the number one homicide rate in the U.S. as a result of increased gang violence. My opinion is that the city of Chicago needs to prove it can provide a safer environment for its own residence before opening its doors to the world on such a massive level.
- Wormwood, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3I do think it's interesting they are hoping to use the former Meigs Field as part of the venue. The demolition of that place had some controversy a few years back due to a "midnight raid" by the mayor to damage the runway.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meigs_Field - snowshoeless, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4seriously, why on earth would they build a temporary 80,000 seat stadium? couldn't they use Soldier Field?
ha ha ha - crashcarstar, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3The field isn't big enough.
- korea, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3America is running out of banks to rupt. Hopefully by the 2016 Olympics, the U.S. and the rest of the world will have undergone an economic upward swing.
- jarjarwang, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3That putt putt course looks great.
- jamesgott, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4why can't we have cool looking designs for things like they had in Beijing?
- scottfarner, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Soldier Field was recently renovated. Despite its appearance (love it or probably hate it), it is a state of the art facility.
There is no need for a permanent 80k seat indoor natatorium (can't rightly have an outdoor stadium for those wintertime swim meets) anywhere in or around Chicago. - drivingalone, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3Note that the Chicago Spire is correctly unfinished.
- Hetman, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3It is sad though. Washington park is where the columbian exposition was held. It was awesome. But you are right it is pretty ***** now.
- orky7, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2uhh at last some one with a humor......the comments up there r so tensed up........
- insomniac8400, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2It will suck if it rains.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 02/24/2009, -3/+5Looks amateur compared to Beijing.
- CarbonKid, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Chicago will look so pretty.....*sigh* I miss the West Side....
- Hetman, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2I agree with the aquatic center. However is it even possible to get 80,000 people into soldeir field, even with modifications?
- centran, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2I wonder if they will shut down all the beaches in 2016 if Chicago gets the Olympics. That is the only way they will be able to safely have water events in the lake.
You see... Chicago has a little problem. Some people on the South side beaches like to let their babies go into the lake without water diapers. Said babies decide it is a good idea to defecate into the water. This causes E.Coli to contaminate the waters. Beaches start to close one by one as days go on working it's way northward.
This is a problem Chicago has every single Summer. There have been years so bad that the E.Coli has found its way all the way up in the north suburb of Evanston. - crashcarstar, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Are you kidding? Yes, it is that bad.
- SouthsideIrish, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Some of them exist already, like McCormick Place, and the Olympic Stadium with be temporary and be destroyed afterwards.
- SouthsideIrish, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3You have never been here in summer. They put palm trees out.
- farcast, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2It works fine 80% of the time, but this morning, for instance, the conductor had to get out of the train and manually switch the tracks. Um, don't they have workers that can do that? Seems like a huge waste of time.
"BEEP BEEP BEEP, Your attention please, we are being delayed due to equipment problems on the train. We should be moving shortly." Uhg. - me2000, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Duuuur...
- Neb28, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2i want to know what the other cities have planned as well... Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro, I'm sure they all have something interesting to offer, and I'd rather go some place more interesting... everything in the US is practically the same.
- FrozenBum, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2trust me, I've been there before and you don't want the olympics in that kind of heat. It could be potentially lethal to the athletes.
