- diemunkiesdie, on 08/10/2008, -0/+99I watched a couple things on the NBCOlympics.com site today. Weirdly enough, I put in my zip-code and selected "Antenna" as my method of receiving NBC and it told me I wasn't allowed to watch any of the live coverage! I changed my settings to say I have "Comcast Cable" and now I am "allowed" to watch the live feeds.
- SIRBERUS, on 08/10/2008, -0/+77Hacker.
- willierab, on 08/10/2008, -7/+57That's because the Olympics are made in China this year.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+33Yeah they kept cutting to commercial when the cheerleaders came out during beach volleyball.
- doublsh0t, on 08/10/2008, -3/+28Weird, I didn't have to put any user info...just had to download Microsoft Silverlight--whatever the ***** that is
- renemartini, on 08/10/2008, -1/+26WTF THEY HAD CHEERLEADERS!!!
- skin, on 08/10/2008, -0/+20NBC has nothing to do with the online channels other than delivering it. The online channels are the video that gets sent to every english speaking country. In fact, NBC has no control over the video feeds they show on the television either, not even the stats or scores on the screen. There is just one video production crew for every major language, and the majority of the NBC announcers are just watching the same thing we are and talking over it because they are in New York, not Bejing.
- darny, on 08/10/2008, -3/+22Totally. Also, during the dance/painting segment, in the US we were treated to Bob Costas saying something to the effect of "...this type of painting is about 1 thousand years old...one of China's oldest art forms..."
So, China's oldest art was created around 1000 AD, huh? Spoken like a true American! - CobaltBlue, on 08/10/2008, -2/+19I don't think that this idiot blogger has any idea what censorship is. Either that or he is just being a keyword whore adding censorship so his blog will end up on Digg, Reddit, Slashdot, etc. Comparing censorship to providing free live streams of events without commentary, which is basically what this guy is complaining about, is totally idiotic.
- LMN8R, on 08/10/2008, -4/+21Silverlight is fantastic. Picture in picture streaming video, 4 simultaneous stream - NBC and Microsoft have provided some amazing technology for the Olympics, that's for sure.
- HappyScrappy, on 08/10/2008, -2/+18The article doesn't actually have anything to do with NBC trying to not let you hear results. It's more about how the commentary he is getting isn't what he is used to.
Stupid sensationalistic article.
On another note, it was cool to see Costas live in Tiananmen Square today, even mentioning what the Chinese did to their own people there. It was expected the Chinese would allow no live broadcasts from Tiananmen, and to see it allowed and NBC not pull any punches was refreshing. - SoSorry, on 08/10/2008, -3/+18That's the least informative article or blog post I've read in a long time. Buried.
- Archer007, on 08/10/2008, -4/+19Have you tried Windows Mojave?
- wezults, on 08/10/2008, -2/+16They think they have a problem now, wait till the next Olympics.
- pcronin, on 08/10/2008, -0/+11well yeah.. you didn't know b/c they kept cutting to commercial... lol
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -1/+11That was a profound comment.
- KIERANMULLEN, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4334953/Olympic_Ga ...
- sweetumssama, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8Asinine comments like that really exaggerate problems with Windows/Microsoft and make those who dislike it seem incredibly overdramatic.
- renemartini, on 08/10/2008, -3/+11Please someone post alternative coverages, I just saw Australian coverage of the opening ceremony, NBC really cut it up and I don't give a f%*$ on Bush cameos.
- slurba, on 08/10/2008, -0/+7I'm thinking he said "shi T" to signify *****, as in you pronounce the "T" as you normally would alone.
- KibblesnBitts, on 08/10/2008, -0/+7I just said I had Directv and I got everything....cable ftw though
- birch25, on 08/10/2008, -2/+9what's wrong with silverlight? i installed it and streaming has been shockingly smooth, even at the highest resolution and picture-in-picture enabled. i know it's made by microsoft and many people get a bad taste in their mouth right when they hear that, but if this is what silverlight will enable, i'm all for it.
- sinkhead, on 08/10/2008, -1/+7[replied to wrong comment, sorry]
- Protoss, on 08/10/2008, -0/+6What?
- cmallinson, on 08/10/2008, -2/+7I feel really lucky to have CBC here in Canada. There is a main channel with live coverage of popular events, a couple of alternate channels for secondary coverage of other events, and a few more channels that show coverage of other events without commentary. I'm sitting here watching rowing heats right now with no commentary - it's almost like sitting in the stands - kind of weird. All the channels are in HD. Almost every event can be seen live somewhere.
We also get the NBC channels, and I have to say, even though they are providing better coverage than in previous years, it always seems like they will only show an event if there's an American in it, and there's a damn good chance he or she will get a gold medal. And on top of that, the event will be time-shifted to appear in prime time. - nullvector, on 08/10/2008, -1/+6That was a pretty whiny article.
I guess that guy never watches cycling events, like the Tour de France or others. The reason they don't know who is where is because cameras aren't fixed on each cyclist 100% of the time. They don't have unlimited camera cars to drive between the cyclists and tell the commentators where they are.
This had nothing to do with censoring either...just some dude whining at the quality of comments during a sporting event... - BlueTunicLink, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5Anyone have a good link to download the opening ceremony? I can't find any decent quality ones.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+5But the show Matt Lauer talking about how in China 90% of people claim to be happy compared to only 20% of Americans. He never mentions where the poll came from or the complete lack of human and religious rights in China. I hate Fox News, but it seems that NBC is no different, just on the opposite side.
- Protoss, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4I had to do the same thing. It didn't have my cable provider, which I guess means they were too cheap to pay for the streaming so I just said I had Comast.
- Protoss, on 08/10/2008, -1/+5Wow, I am quite impressed with the site and Silverlight. It doesn't bog down my Macbook like Flash does and the quality is quite good!
- pcronin, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4and unnecessary
- CobaltBlue, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4and sensationalistic.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4***** (you?) NBC and their ***** coverage of the games....
- muckemuck, on 08/10/2008, -1/+4Censors? wtf? .. he just ran into some bad commentators. He needs to go watch FOX news if he wants to see footage that has been doctored and censored.
- melonhedd, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3guys help the olympics don't work on my 386
- sinkhead, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3I found the BBC version to be pretty good, it's long though. About an hour and a half from start to end (but that includes the Chinese President's speeches).
- MattH, on 08/10/2008, -3/+6You would be happpy too if you where dragged out of the Dark Ages living in Poverty and given Western Style lifestyle with a factory Job ....
- nielkie, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3It sucks more here in Australia. Only ONE channel broadcasting (which only shows about quarter of the events), with ads literally every 5 minutes,
No live online streaming ether. There are a few clips and "on-demand" events, but only of those shown on TV.
I thought the Olympics were meant to be a global event. Why am I not allowed to watch it all? - Tabou, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3"No, I don't think they are four feet, eleven inches down. I think those are minutes and seconds."
What a ***** idiot! - omyard, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3So what was being censored again? All I read about was how a guy wasn't hearing the results he wanted to hear.
- zwaldowski, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2I can't even be accurate. With my local cable provider, NBC doesn't even provide the new NBC station (WMBF) in my area. It's the only one I have.
- pcronin, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2Well, yet again no love for our suposed NAFTA partners...
good thing CBC.ca has it.. sortof...seems to be edited by an epileptic though...
I'm glad I don't have to rely on NBC for anything, and I regret that comedy central is good enough that I put up with being auto redirected to the Canadian comedy network.
(damn crtc and cancon rules... if i'm watching a yanky chan, I want to see the commercials on it!) - digghasnoethics, on 08/10/2008, -3/+5That's something I tried to tell the 2012 team. Don't try to sell one-off official sponsorship gigs or try to overly control people - it will come back to bite in a country like the UK.
Unfortunately these are people who are already living in the past and the understanding of the world of 2012 is beyond them. They are still trying to lock down things that will never fly down the line. They should embrace interaction, not try to prevent it. We're not China.
I'm waiting for a Banksy unofficial contribution to the opening ceremony - its ripe for it. - LMN8R, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2Seriously. Kiddies like ldietired will grow up eventually, right now it's hilarious to see them hate on things coming out of Microsoft just because they're Microsoft.
- xartemisx, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2I've been watching the NBC feeds and chatting with someone watching the CBC feeds.. the videos appear to be mostly the same, except CBC is at least 30 seconds ahead of time. There are also several events being covered that NBC doesn't stream, but instead puts on TV. Not only does this mean that anyone wanting to watch these events, which are usually the most watched, have to suffer through terrible commentary, more commercials and downright boring clip shows in between events, they also miss out on a lot of activities between events. I've not one seen a dancing Olympic mascot, but my Canadian friend has seen dozens.
The streams are actually really nice - you can watch almost any event, with one commercial at the beginning, without crappy commentary but instead decent textual updates. - DforSpiD, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2From what I've seen both 7 and SBS have coverage, so there isn't only one channel...
I noticed that the SBS coverage was far better too... without so many ads (in fact I don't think I saw any) - nielkie, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1I agree that SBS's coverage is better, but they are not a dedicated broadcaster. They only show events when it is convent, so they rarely show any of the events that do not air on Seven.
- Peekman, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1There has to be some sort of control over what is shown though...... For example, i watched the Phelps win on CBC last night and they showed the Canadian who placed 7th a lot more than NBC showed him surely??
Don't they get a whole bunch of camera feeds and the stations production crew can decide which they show? - PintOfGuinness, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1The BBC coverage this year is fantastic!
- darny, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Heh, you sound like my wife.
Chinese civilization is something like 4000 years old, four times older than one of the Costas-purported "oldest art forms."
I'm normally not a hair splitter, but couple this error with other insight from Bob explaining to us at home how we're not used to more than moo shoo pork and egg rolls from the Chinese, it's worth speaking up about.
I've been combing the web for a transcript of the commentary but I can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have a link? It was so laden with stereotypes not only demonstrating how ignorant we are as Americans but apparently how much ignorance the commentators assume we accept from ourselves. I found the commentary not only offensive to the Chinese but also to Americans such as myself that actually possess half a shred of education. -
