- nicksorrells, on 08/19/2008, -24/+146I've noticed studying overseas that most countries do not have the same idea of racism that we do in America. We have been trained by political correctness to view stereotypes or the calling of attention to ethnic features as inherently racist. But in much of the world, these are not necessarily seen as such. An Argentinean might very well ask you why the Chinese slanted eyes make them inferior to Caucasians, any more than darker skin makes one inferior. There's a chance they would genuinely not see the harm in this. Yes "making slanted eyes has been a racist gesture for many years," but that's the U.S., with a long history of American-Chinese tensions. Confusing our culture with Spain or Argentina is more prejudiced in my opinion than their actions
- Maynza, on 08/19/2008, -5/+93You think that's offensive? I uncovered another team doing it! http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/8012/usachina3b ...
- mpdono, on 08/19/2008, -8/+90People need to lighten up.
Now back to Asian reporter Trisha Tackanowa for her slant on the issue. - drbuns, on 08/19/2008, -4/+72Having lived in hispanic countries, I can personally attest to hispanics being far more racist than North Americans. For example, I went to a soccer match in Spain in 1997 where the visiting team had someone from Africa on its squad, and everyone in the stadium was chanting "mono, mono, mono!!" when he came onto the pitch.
That, of course, means "monkey" in spanish. That would never happen here. - merlin484, on 08/19/2008, -2/+62Whatever, roundeye
- ruforealz, on 08/19/2008, -7/+63America has a fine tradition of making fun of asians. I think we've just learned not to leave any evidence.
- prefixmag, on 08/19/2008, -38/+93Medfreak,
Making slanted eyes has been a racist gesture for many years. You not being aware that this gesture is racist does not make it a non-racist expression. This just means you're unaware.
Granted racist expressions against asians is not as well known, but slanted eyes is a racist action just like making monkey noises towards a black man is a racist action. - foss3, on 08/19/2008, -10/+54You can speculate on it or you can actually comment on it having been there.
I was in Buenos Aires and there were some Chinese and Asian people there. However it was completely segregated and there was absolutely little integration between the cultures. The Chinese would work in their shops and I don't think I saw really any mixing between the two, as far as socializing and definitely not dating. Basically the population was European decent Argentines and indigenous Argentines. Very little blacks, asians, arabs or anything. In fact, much much more homogeneous than the US, where even though there is plenty of racism, it's much more integrated and there is a much broader mix of cultures.
So your assumption that in Argentina they are so innocent they don't have racial prejudice is laughable. There is a tremendous amount of racism in South America. Speculating about it in your idealistic mind is dangerous in that you will just assume what you think is probably true and not really look to find out the truth. As I can see many people digged you up you're not in the minority, sadly.
It's interesting to listen to non-asians talk about whether this is offensive or not. How could you know if it was or wasn't? I'm Asian, just recently came back from Argentina, and I think I have a better perspective on this than you. Have you grown up your entire life as a minority and had to deal with any real type of racism? If you're white, you would have absolutely no idea.
The pictures were racist. Just like someone in black-face. I think you are inherently racist too, but you're just trying to justify your prejudice, rather than try to think about why you feel that way.
So much ignorance. And it breeds on other stupid people. I can't believe people agree with your opinion that racism is not universal and only exists in some countries. It's everywhere. - Assad, on 08/19/2008, -9/+40Here in Brazil this gesture is not considered offensive at all and we have a lot of asian immigrants.
Here is a pic of Ronaldo in the last world cup, the asian girl doesn't seem to mind the gesture either. http://www.basicmedia.co.uk/doteu/worldcup/2006/06 ... - AsianChopsticks, on 08/19/2008, -4/+32Not all Chinese people have slanted eyes...
Generalization leads to prejudice. - ashwinmudigonda, on 08/19/2008, -10/+38Wait for the Chinese to respond by posing as if jumping over fences.

Same reason why people find this racist. - artfiend77, on 08/19/2008, -1/+25Dude, they scream that ***** when a person from Africa is in their OWN damn team.
- aleishman, on 08/19/2008, -6/+30Do many Asian people think these gestures are offensive?
- TheSexyGeek, on 08/19/2008, -3/+26The thing is, Asians DO have slanted eyes but black people don't make monkey sounds. . . .except for Soulja Boy.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/aug/19/olympi ... - rpong1981, on 08/19/2008, -5/+27I'm an Asian American and grew up in an affluent white neighborhood in the SF Bay area. The picture doesn't offend me because over time I've learned to accept the fact that some people are just *****. Mostly white people ... and *****.
- kingmanic, on 08/19/2008, -5/+26I certainly do.
- kingmanic, on 08/19/2008, -3/+22"The USA is by far the most racially tolerant country on the planet."
Your claim is heavily contested by Canada. - medfreak, on 08/19/2008, -21/+39Exactly. I don't live in the US nor have I ever lived there, and I don't get what all the fuss about mimicking inherent racial qualities is about.
- 27spots, on 08/19/2008, -5/+23"the [argentine] women's football team was eliminated from Olympic competition - their campaign ultimately ended by defeat to the hosts, China."
well... good riddance to them and their country's paltry 2 total medal count. - geekyfrans, on 08/19/2008, -1/+18WTB Mirror
- cryptomystic, on 08/19/2008, -6/+21"The [argentine] women's football team was eliminated from Olympic competition - their campaign ultimately ended by defeat to the hosts, China."

GG. - Typhoon2009, on 08/19/2008, -3/+17Yeah, hispanics are a bit more inclined to racism... I'd know, half my family is hispanic. It's not the same kind of racism as say the KKK for the most part, it's... different in a sense. They see a very dark-colored guy and they'll point him out, "Oooh, mira al negro, que oscura es su piel!" (Look at the black guy [although it sounds more like 'darkie'], he's so black!"
But you also get racism as drbuns mentioned. It annoys the hell out of me actually... my mother's always making somewhat racist remarks. Nothing like "Damn ***** always eating all the fried chicken" thank god, but she'll say something like "That guy smelled as bad as a Korean." Whatever, I guess it's just something that's part of Hispanic culture... thank god I'm as 'gringo' as a hispanic can get. - korea, on 08/19/2008, -2/+16Yep
- sphoony, on 08/19/2008, -2/+15It's offensive.
I don't just play an Asian on TV. I'm also one in real life. I think you'd be hard press to fine an Asian who doesn't think that it was offensive. - artfiend77, on 08/19/2008, -0/+12I'd buy a CD full of monkey sounds before buying Soulja Boy's CD.
- alex7575, on 08/19/2008, -4/+16I am Korean and was born in Bolivia and raised in Brazil. And I can attest that you're 100% wrong, and they knew exactly what they were doing, and that that gesture is offensive to Asians.
- inajeep, on 08/19/2008, -2/+13Making fun of someone's culture, skin color, eyes is considered racist. I learned a few years ago that in NYC Yoko is a derisive slang term for Asians. You learn something new everyday.
But those of you who don't understand are neither Asian nor have been alive long enough to learn this fact. Your playing catch up with the rest of the world. - empraptor, on 08/19/2008, -6/+17don't feed the troll.
troll or dumb as a brick. either way, there's no reason to argue with the guy. - BaoUnit, on 08/19/2008, -1/+12Yes, but I'm just one Asian.
- xceptionaly, on 08/19/2008, -11/+22BREAKING NEWS:
Somebody somewhere made fun of somebody else! Commence faux outrage so you can feel morally superior! - Khanvalescent, on 08/19/2008, -3/+14You guys are such apologists for other countries, but if Americans did this there would be the standard indiggnation (har har) and anti-American rancor.

s e r v e r s . . . - jnorris441, on 08/19/2008, -1/+11What do you mean "those Spanish-speaking countries?" YOU RACIST
(I know it's not a race.) - russdogg, on 08/19/2008, -14/+24When did it become a racial slur? Long before you were born.
- artfiend77, on 08/19/2008, -5/+15Great, so using your logic I can puff up my lips and make them big in front of a Black Person?
- MikeMania, on 08/19/2008, -2/+12Well, I kinda do to be deep down honest. It certainly doesn't feel flattering.
- ompa, on 08/19/2008, -3/+13I'm Asian, and I'm not really offended by it. It's a bit annoying, kind of like being called a chink or a chinadoll, but it's not so offensive that I'd get pissed over it. I'd also agree with what's been said before; it's not racist, but it's a dick move.
Then again, I have to laugh at the people who do try to offend the chinese; those same people who try to do so are generally the ones who will end up having their jobs replaced by chinese immigrants, or have their jobs outsourced to China. - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10Ask Rosie.
- kingmanic, on 08/19/2008, -9/+18It's called Mocking not mimicking.
- BillDoE, on 08/19/2008, -5/+14Yeah, those damn Japanese and their racist anime with round eyes. Yes, I kid.
- sfgamergirl, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9Hell yeah it's offensive. Look, everyone's been discriminated against, even white folk, blah blah... but they're idiots to do it on an International stage. And it makes the rest of their country look like ignorant *****. They didn't make those gestures for fun with a good attitude. They were talking sh*t.
- jbella, on 08/19/2008, -2/+11As someone who got his ass kicked constantly by rednecks making this same gesture.
I do. - Blandyman, on 08/19/2008, -1/+9I'm Cuban/Nicaraguan and I can also confirm that you guys are totally ***** wrong.
This is the classic racist gesture for a Chinese person, same as sticking your lips for a black person or making an L to make your nose look bigger for Jews. You highlight a characteristic, that although it may be true, has never been used in a positive manner and could only mean something bad. If you didn't know and did it is another thing entirely... but if that's the case, then you've really ***** up. - goleopards1, on 08/19/2008, -9/+17America is really the only nation that is so politically correct when it comes to race. Most nations don't see this as anything controversial.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -27/+35Asians have slanted eyes that is a fact so these teams take a picture of themselves imitating Asians how is that racist?
- Dyar, on 08/19/2008, -3/+11For someone telling people not to giving a ***** about what others do, you sure give a lot of ***** about what others do.
