- mrmuhnrmuh, on 08/21/2008, -2/+35No. 1 Stanford University
2008 Olympians: 46
Stanford has more affiliated athletes participating in this year's Olympics than any other college. Its 46 participating athletes include 11 current students. The school's biggest contingent comes from its swimming team, which provided eight athletes competing for five different countries. Notable Stanford athletes in the games include swimmer Julia Smit, who picked up two medals in Beijing, and volleyball star Logan Tom. Another honor for Stanford: It has graduated more current American billionaires than any other school except Harvard.
No. 2 University of Southern California
2008 Olympians: 41
Trojans have won a gold medal in every Olympics since 1912. Athletes accomplishing the feat this year include Rebecca Soni, a USC senior who grabbed first in the 200-meter breast stroke with a world record time. Another potential medalist is Lisa Leslie, the WNBA player who starred at USC in the early 1990s. The U.S. women's basketball team beat South Korea on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals. The 6 foot 5 inches Leslie has already captured golds in each of the previous summer Olympic Games.
No. 3 University of California, Berkeley
2008 Olympians: 41
Forty-one Golden Bears are participating in Beijing. Milorad Cavic, who attended Cal from 2003 to 2006, competed for Serbia's swimming team this year. He captured the silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly last week, finishing just .01 second behind gold medalist Michael Phelps. Natalie Coughlin, who was at Cal from 2001 to 2004, captured six medals this year. She already had five medals from the 2004 games. "When I went into this meet, I was so nervous going into this Olympics with six events," Coughlin told reporters. "I have never done it at such a high caliber, but it got better as I went on."
No. 4 University of Florida
2008 Olympians: 34
Like most colleges on this list, University of Florida's biggest group of athletes at Beijing comes from its swim team. Nineteen swimming Gators are competing for 13 countries, including Dara Torres. She started attending University of Florida in 1985, and Beijing is the fifth Olympics for the 41-year-old. She's captured three silvers this year. "I'm competitive; I wanted to win a gold, but I gave it my best shot," Torres said
No. 5 UCLA
2008 Olympians: 32
UCLA's big feeder teams for the Olympics are its women's track and field and softball teams and its men's soccer team. Seven lady Bruins are competing in track and field events. Six will play on the U.S. softball team. Former UCLA men's soccer players Marvell Wynne, Patrick Ianni and Benny Feilhaber are on the U.S. soccer roster. Wynne, son of a pro-baseball player, plays defender for Major League Soccer's Toronto FC.
No. 6 Auburn University
2008 Olympians: 31
Auburn University has one of the most cosmopolitan contingents at the games. The Alabama athletic powerhouse has 31 affiliated athletes at the Olympics. Three are competing for the U.S., and 28 are competing for other countries. The latter group includes Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry, who captured three silvers and a gold in Beijing.
No. 7 University of Arizona
2008 Olympians: 27
The 27 Wildcats competing in Beijing have captured one gold and two silver medals so far. Still in contention to medal is UA alum and softball pitcher Jennie Finch. In her Olympics appearance this year, Finch pitched a perfect two innings and retired all batters she faced. The U.S. softball team won the game, ending round robin play with a 7-0 record and moving on to the playoffs with top seed. Fitch, who graduated from Arizona in 2002, is married to Minnesota Twins minor league pitcher Casey Daigle.
No. 8 University of Texas
2008 Olympians: 22
'It never gets old. It really does feel like the first time,' said backstroke specialist Aaron Peirsol after picking up one of his three medals in Beijing. The Texas grad had already captured four medals in previous Olympics. He is one of 10 former or current swimmers in the Olympic Games from the school's men and women's swimming programs. Other Longhorns at the games include Antiguan sprinter Brendan Christian and diver Troy Dumais.
No. 9 University of Michigan
2008 Olympians: 22
Michael Phelps, winner of eight gold medals in Beijing, attended the University of Michigan. Since Phelps swam professionally while studying at Michigan, he could not compete for their team but did serve as a volunteer assistant coach. Going pro is paying off. After his historic showing, big endorsements are following. One agent close to Phelps estimated he could rake in over $100 million during his career. Other Wolverines at the games are U.S. women's water polo goalie Betsey Armstrong and American wrestler Andy Hrovat.
No. 10 University of North Carolina
2008 Olympians: 20
Six Tar Heels competed for the U.S. female field hockey team in the Olympics, but their squad was eliminated from medal contention on Monday after a draw with the U.K. Faring better is the woman's soccer team, which will play for the gold on Monday. That team includes five Tar Heels. Also with ties to the University of North Carolina are Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda and American distance runner Shalane Flanagan. - MonumentMan, on 08/21/2008, -2/+32dugg down for forbes.com's 10 pages for 10 rankings....worst website on the internet

10. University of North Carolina / 20 - coopaloop, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6I thought UCLA would be higher. I'm not surprised that the western schools have more Olympians though. Sports like water polo and volleyball that take a lot of athletes are bigger here than in other places.
- MrMysterious, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7Wow, California sure represented.
- Holk23, on 08/21/2008, -6/+11What about colleges that produce porn stars?
- huskerdude, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Wow. Looks like California could field our own Olympic team and still have one of the larger ones.

but... "buried for slide show" - KyleGoetz, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Basically Texas + Auburn + Mich. + Tar Heels + every school in California
- prth8machine, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5Screw that. No way I'm clicking through 10 pages for a paragraph per page. Lame, and buried as such.
- VigRoco, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Porn stars don't go to college. It would have to be a list of High Schools, but then that would be really creepy.
- mandarin, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Mostly Cali schools. Does the weather really play a part of athletic development?
- nem0, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3I hate links to Forbes. They always turn out to be slideshows. Can't they just do a simple gallery?

Oh yeah, I forgot, you make sure they have no future, and get them straight out of high school. - JSchatt, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0At the bottom of the list!
Go Blue!!!! - cubicledrone, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0Oh good. Colleges are producing something. Of course, that degree you get isn't worth jack *****, but let's not bicker and argue over things like the future of the country. The next generation can deal with removing all the incentives for getting an education, after we've wasted ten trillion dollars worth of the current generation's educations.
We'll be fine. Big smile now. - aightblah, on 08/21/2008, -1/+1Why is this dugg down? Yes, yay USC! It should also be noted that USC has sent the most athletes overall to the olympics, out of all US colleges/universities. I think its awesome to see USC noted for something other than football. The Forbes website, on the other hand, sucks.
- PopoDj, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0Faster above and stronger ...... We the best China's

HAIL TO THE VICTORS! - moezes, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0i think the top school for gold medals would be... China's athlete factory.
- xatx3, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0oh yeah uf baby
- iamveryharsh, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0I'm sure you can find it somewhere behind LSU and Florida.
I keed , I keed. Can't imagine it being out of the top 15 though as some great athlete's have emerged from there. Jesse Owens was pretty good. - iamveryharsh, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0Thanks to whoever posted the list here. Honestly, the slideshows are getting on everyone's nerves.
Pac-10 dominating that list though. U-C-L-A fight fight fight! - SimmaDownNow, on 08/21/2008, -2/+1The title infers 'Olympics.' The Olympics consists of a Winter version followed by a Summer.
