- iamsmooth, on 08/15/2008, -4/+56The long shutter speed one is great.
- Cyclone, on 08/15/2008, -4/+39My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father! Prepare to die!
- drig, on 08/15/2008, -2/+34I've been fencing for 10 years now and just love the coverage fencing has gotten this year. It's a great sport. You can learn more about it at http://www.usfencing.org/usfa/
- KiddKill, on 08/15/2008, -2/+24I'd poke em.
- selmer, on 08/15/2008, -0/+21Margherita is hot...
- RunJun, on 08/15/2008, -1/+21I watched some of live and I've got to say the loud screaming they were doing was off putting and hilarious.
- BXRWXR, on 08/15/2008, -3/+19I'd like to joust with the bronze medalist.
- FriniK, on 08/15/2008, -4/+19i should pay more attention to fencing...
how cool are those helmets!! - klitzbtc, on 08/15/2008, -1/+15Why do I miss all the cool ***** from the Olympics, every time I turn on the damn TV it's womens water polo.
- rinote, on 08/15/2008, -0/+13The picture of the fencer crying is really dramatic, I love it!
- GPSCenter, on 08/15/2008, -9/+19Looks like Daft Punk.
- Cenobia, on 08/15/2008, -1/+11The 10th image down is awesome. Looks like she's staring into the eyes of her opponent as she drains the life out of her.
- diggerbez, on 08/15/2008, -3/+12I wish they showed as much fencing as they do beach volley ball on NBC.
- FrizzleyFry, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8Granted I know nothing about fencing, but you would think with the technology that's available today they wouldn't have all those wires hanging out the back of their gear.
- drlha, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9The helmets were developed to make the sport more appealing for TV audiences. The previous metal helmets didn't show the faces of the opponents leading to TV execs thinking that fencing was unbroadcastable due to the fact that the outfits made the fencers look anonymous.
- ahoyhoy1, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9Why do I see MrBabyMan's article on the front page even though I have him blocked?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7holy crap
i gotta see some video of this - kelchm, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7uhhhh. how about the nbc olympics site?
- proghead, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7masks
- sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6sure they look wimpy, but especially epees are very stiff and can give you giant welts... comparable to paintball
- sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6However, there have been problems in epee with the plastic breaking...
At a world cup in Cuba, the blade of an epee fencer went right through! Thats why epee fencers are not required to use them for the olympics (as they were previously going to) - sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6there is a reason for it though.... in saber and foil when both the lights are on the director must decide whose touch it is (by right-of way rules)... many times the director is unsure and those yells (which say you are absolutely sure it was yours) can sway the director....
i have been to national and international competitions and seen it work so many times... a wrong call given because of the fencers yell and the crowds cheer - frozensnake, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6the one on the right is kind of cute
- petemcfraser, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Comment on page "Why bite the bronze medal?" LOL.
- thescimitar, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6The "staged japanese crap" to which you're referring (and by, that, I presume you mean kendo), involves being struck with a weapon that can deliver about 1000 lbs of force to your opponent. Considering that other than the kendogi, do, min, cote, and tare, the body is basically unprotected, being hit with one of these things is clearly not staged.
I have weekly bruises to show for it! - Logisti, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6Yeah... masks :) Fencers get upset if you call them helmets.
- BossKey, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6You know what would up the ratings?
Light sabers. - sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -2/+7My teamate from my club fenced in Womens Epee representing the US and I have known Becca Ward, the bronze medalist in saber for a few years. It is nice to finally have fencing get some coverage and for people to understand it is much more intense than everyone thinks.
Fencing is now the 2nd fastest growing sport in the US and we always love to have more people try it out, no matter what age or athletic ability. To get involved find a club in your area and give it a try, its a great work out!

http://www.fencing.net/index.php?option=com_mtree& ... - sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5oh it is even worse than they have it in these pictures.... at all national tournaments, fencers are attacted to wires that go through reals. Just this year did they start to use wireless (shown here) which is still a nuisance.
The one reason they didn't switch to wireless for a long time is they were worrying about cheating, someone wirelessly making the lights go off. Another problem is fencing is a small market, so no manufacturer will spend a lot of time making something complicated for so little return. - H4n90fThur5D4y5, on 08/15/2008, -0/+50_o ...Oh yes...Sounds exactly like every pterodactyl screech I've ever heard...
- drlha, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Indeed. Foil is where its at in fencing, much more exciting to watch than Epee or Sabre.
- thebigbradwolf, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/ ...
- star00girl, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4too bad they've only been broadcasting sabre for the olympics, guess the other two aren't "interesting" enough.
- Groggie, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Also, when fencing you're building up so much adrenaline for a round that lasts usually less than 3 or 4 seconds, so yelling is just the resultant of what's left of the rush, and is the best way to get it out.
I find it surprising that there isn't a timer or something to show whose light lit first so that it doesn't need to come down to a subjective human decision in a quite overt sport. Either way, fencing is damn awesome. - sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4It is not just about who hits first though.... (in foil and saber)
What matters is whos attacking, who parries, who hesitates.... a fencer can hit half a second faster, but if the other fencer parries and hits them, it is that fencers touch...
In epee there is a timer, where one light on keeps the other from coming on (unless it is within a tiny amount of time--then they each get a touch) - acegi, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Fencing postures are awesome.
Their body language is totally saying 'hell yeah I meant that' - urgeigh, on 08/15/2008, -1/+5Damn that is hot, am I alone here? = /
- DrDragun, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4I fenced a bit in college with no previous practice. I did Epee, which is totally freestyle, and there are no "right of way" rules like the other two blades.
We had a guest coach who was a former Olympian who would visit from time to time, and I actually beat him in a couple of matches. Let me just say this: when it comes to Epee it is possible to win with pure luck and aggression more often than you think. A completely aggressive diving stab move will score you the point probably 25-30% of the time even against an Olympian. Of course you are resigning yourself to only winning a 3-point match maybe ~3% of the time if all you do is charge and do the diving stab, but you still have a tangible chance!
That sport was insanely fun. - Carpex, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Some of these are truly amazing works of art. bravo
- demiurgency, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Did anybody else see that first shot and think....
"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
It's the mask, I guess. - j3ff86, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3/failing
- shipwreck58, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Thats because 1. NBC sucks ass when it comes to sports coverage, 2. There are not Americans who are gonna sweep and destroy their opponents to make us all feel more superior (Phelps swimming hype), 3. Misshapen, growth stunted cute girls to make us all feel warm and fuzzy inside (gymnastics), or 4. One of the few womens sports Americans will watch for more than 30 seconds (Volleyball) until they realize it's not Beach Volleyball.
I am an American, proud of my country as a whole, but I will watch the BBC for my Olympics thank you. - sevvo, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3They are, it's just that the action is so damn fast that it's harder for less-experienced viewers to comprehend.
- proghead, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3its as good as you think it is.
- n3demonic, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Stewie: Oh there there, let me dry those tears. (licks his fingers with Meg's tears on them) Oh, oh yes yes, your anguish sustains me
- DrDragun, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3It worked for me, though I felt bad for beating up on the guy's toes of his right foot, and slightly absurd for winning our match with three foot-strikes.
Yeah we did 3-point bouts during training because the team was so large. Obviously I was never dueling the coach in real tournaments where we used 5 and 15 point bouts. - noodlez, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3i'm not rich and i fence.
- noodlez, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3more pictures from the olympics from the official fencing photographer
http://www.fencingphotos.com/ - sonordrums135, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3there are 3 different categories of fencing, foil epee and saber
this year we swept the medals in womens individual saber... some of these pics are of the different weapons -
