- Cubedude04, on 08/09/2008, -1/+31I think most of digg will be rooting for the virgin islands
- app103, on 08/08/2008, -0/+20Gotta love the underdogs.
It's like the first Jamaican bobsled team and that African runner too poor to afford sneakers that ran the marathon barefoot. Even though they didn't have a shot in Hell of winning, we rooted for them, any way.
At least I know I did.
Go Republic of Guinea! (they are sending a woman to kick butt!) - Cenobite, on 08/09/2008, -0/+19Sometimes that joke works and sometimes it doesn't. I just can't seem to discern the pattern.
- EdmontonEh, on 08/08/2008, -2/+17Is it just me or are many of these athletes running, shooting, or fighting?
Hmmmm.... weird - christof53, on 08/09/2008, -4/+19Go Canada!
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -0/+15Love how the map of the entire Republic of Nauru shows the location of stuff like a hospital, a government office, a hotel and a weather station.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -4/+18Could you imagine being the only Olympic athlete from your country. You'd get so much tail.....
- calenerd, on 08/09/2008, -17/+27***** you, 2 of my friends died rooting for smaller Olympic countries.
- teddyrux, on 08/09/2008, -2/+10Oman, why you gotta be Haiti on A rube, ah? It's time Togo get a Bhutan by my buddy, Chad.
- interad, on 08/08/2008, -0/+8go Botswana!
- bdbr, on 08/09/2008, -0/+8Not most of them, but I'm not terribly ashamed to admit I didn't know where Republic of Nauru is.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/09/2008, -1/+9According to your profile you are an American. So wtf? Why do you hate America, commie?
- nedzeve, on 08/09/2008, -1/+8It's "niga", but only black people should refer to the country as such.
- phyr3x, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7The things people learn best are the things they learn out of necessity.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7dude.... The Olympics are the *****! It gives us a view of other cultures and allows people to interact with each other without letting politics and even wars get in the way. Either you're too young, too immature or you think your too cool but plenty of people still care about the Olympics. You don't have to be a douche.
- TheResistless, on 08/08/2008, -1/+7Oh man, I'm so rooting for Oman.
- str3ama, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6St Vincent and the Grenadines..doesn't it sound like a band name? Apparently Afghanistan is at the olympics, I heard the commentator say how President Karzai was in the audience to cheer them on, but I think I missed them in the Parade of Nations.
- JonCaker, on 08/08/2008, -2/+8Screw Britain, I'm rooting for Grenada!
- LordoftheLoo, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6Nauru Represent!
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6LETS GO TRINIDAD!
- Cheesehead9805, on 08/09/2008, -0/+5I'm Rooting for Robonia.
- SRSco, on 08/09/2008, -2/+7LOL you're getting buried because American Diggers hate their own country. I Digg you up.
- ggko, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4Barefoot runners aren't uncommon, so not knowing his circumstances, I personally wouldn't rank his "underdog-ness" too high.
My favourite is Eric Moussambani from Equatorial Guinea.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Moussambani
Trained less than a year for his swimming event in a hotel pool that's less than half Olympic length. Won his heat because the other two swimmers false-started. He still swam, alone, taking twice the time of the more "serious" competition. - prammy, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5oh man.
I used to live there around 15 years ago. - mtappenden, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5I'm rooting for Britain!
- TheTaoOfBill, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4I am rooting for Petoria
- presidentjapan, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4Rootin' for Haiti w/ my Haitian roomate. :)
- SeaFour, on 08/09/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure anyone makes it to the Olympics, in any sport, without specialist training.
- marjo9, on 08/09/2008, -1/+4oh noessss, a former british penal colony with barely 20 million ppl take issue with the word "root." stop the presses people!!!!!
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3So many "Republics".
- hiPpymIck, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3their president is called Ludwig Scotty
- purelithium, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3Me either, but after reading the wikipedia entry, I am now an expert on the Nauruans.
- santaliqueur, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3It is wrong on Digg. Most users, whether they know it or not, don't like America.
- LauV, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3The barefoot runner won the gold medal (as the first african btw)
http://dailyrunningtips.com/inspiring-stories/ethi ... - diggdiggerid, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3Yes. Yes they are.
- Cenobite, on 08/09/2008, -2/+5Then thank goodness nobody gives a ***** about Australia.
- purelithium, on 08/09/2008, -0/+3No, Marcus Stephen is their president now.
Side note: I wonder what life would be like if your entire country/de facto "world" was a island not more than 12km across? It could be simple and relaxing, but also frustrating for a person used to the huge expanse of the Canadian Wildlerness, like me. - Philoushka, on 08/09/2008, -2/+4cue Homer Simpson: "USA! USA!"
- lsatkins, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2Imagine if one of these athletes from a small country wins a medal. They'll probably get treated like kings for the rest of their lives. I heard a President of some country said if anyone wins a medal he will build them their dream home.
- gmiley, on 08/09/2008, -1/+3Even though most users of Digg are U.S. citizens? (America is not a country, it's a continent by the way.) Why is it that only when someone says they are proud to live in the U.S. they either buried or ridiculed? I guess it is in fashion to hate us. Why doesn't the same happen when someone says they are proud to be from any other country.
Just be cause we have ***** government officials doesn't mean we can't be proud of our country, where we were born and live. - CrushThemTorg, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2Hail, hail Robonia. A land I didn't make up.
- Cubedude04, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2Sorry i posted that twice. First time digg said comment saved but it never reloaded and i waited a minute and it still hadn't appeared. Digg me down!
- hiPpymIck, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2well theyve got wilderness..
the whole interior has been mined for phosphates
and even worse..
"The country placed much of its phosphate revenue in trust funds to ease the transition away from mining, but bad investments and corruption led to a serious depletion of the fund in the 1990s.
In an attempt to generate income, Nauru became an unregulated offshore banking center, gaining notoriety for money laundering. It abandoned the industry in Mar., 2003, under the threat of crippling economic sanctions by the United States, which regarded Nauru banks as potential havens for terrorist financing.
By mid-2004 Nauru faced bankruptcy, and the remaining assets of the trust, mostly Australian property, were seized to pay off its debts. In July, 2004, Australian officials took charge of the country's finances."

- KJSatz, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1***** you, two of my friends died screwing Britain!
- PhantomPhoenix, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1I'm rooting for any country that is going up against the "People's Republic" of China; especially 'Chinese Taipei' (Taiwan; also known as the 'Republic of China', the TRUE CHINESE GOVERNMENT).
- thxfuture, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1You got to love the underdogs.
